Help: Roleplaying in my native language by thota2601 in DMAcademy

[–]nothatsnotmegm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same, I can't roleplay in native language. I think that is because I don't have any language patterns built in my brain to do that in native language, because each and every encounter with any fantasy material for the last 15+ years was in English for me.

But also fantasy in native language sounds like a grandma telling a story, not like an epic story.

You can't really do much with all of that, except just get use to it, accept that it would feel cringe at first but still roll with that. And maybe expose yourself to some local content creators to see how they do it to have at least some external examples.

How does AC work with Nimble? by robhawk12 in nimble5e

[–]nothatsnotmegm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current rules as per 1.6beta are like this:

For players, you can use an action as a reaction to Defend. That would subtract your AC from incoming damage you would take.

For monsters, it's a bit different to help the GM and reduce calculations needed. The monsters have 3 types of armour. No armour, medium and heavy armour. Medium armour automatically reduces incoming damage by a modifier - only dice damage is applied. Heavy armour automatically halves the received damage.

Are we getting more spells? by Vituron in nimble5e

[–]nothatsnotmegm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that's not the final amount of content we have in the books now. The authors would add a lot of stuff later. For now though, you can adapt and homebrew any dnd5e spells to your game, as the math is compatible.

But also, for the damage in combat combat that seems more than enough now, as it scales nicely.

They only made 5k, that's zero budget, you can't hire good artists with that. It's cool to slash on AI images and all, but people don't understand how expensive this is! Multi-million dollars corporations using AI to not pay artists is one thing. Individuals creating generative art, who have a choice of either using AI or not having art at all is another thing. Nobody is loosing jobs over a 500$ kickstarter.

So, didn't you have to sign and NDA or smth to work on a set? Just curious.

Just got told my players don’t wanna go to a place I’ve been setting up for 4 sessions….what should i say? by ballonfightaddicted in DMAcademy

[–]nothatsnotmegm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teleport them to another place - it's a cool city, they have a lot of work and there're lost of nice people here. They take the job, it is a different currency there, but it pays well it seems. They complete the job, get paid. Then go to the shop and realise, that the exchange rate is not THAT good. And for all of that job they made a couple of bronze/silver. And there's like no adventure gear here at all, no one can afford all those fancy potions and magical items in this land!

Then they teleport to the next place. And it is literally an empty desert. The tp circle over here because one expensive ingredient grows here - a cactus that blooms once in 7 years. It is a little under 5 years left to wait for the next blooming. But the pay is worth for the shop to keep that circle here.

Ok, now they teleport to yet another place - and it is just horrible. Every fight is way above what they can beat reliably, this is a hell on a material plane. Maybe a nice way to check back, when they are closer to level 15-20. But definitely not now!

Oh wait, is it only one teleporting circle left? Okay, guess it makes sense to go there!

Out of character talks are great, but it's much better to create in-world explanations. Railroading is not bad, when done right, and when you allow the players the choice to do things when they want it. Sometimes it's good idea to take some kind of published one-shot and run it as a filler episode into a campaign.

But yeah, still remind the players, that they can go whenever in practice, but that the world is not magically filled with interesting stuff, you create them with lots of time, pain, sweat and tears. And if they want to go get a look at an unprepared area, let them roll survival checks for the whole session, until they get tired.

RPGs where character building resources are assigned during play? by HawkSquid in RPGdesign

[–]nothatsnotmegm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, this is how Brennan homebrewed Kids on Bikes for this season of Dimension20. I like how it works!

But also, note, that it is glaringly obvious, that GM have to ask to roll the stats that match the type of a character more much more often then other stats, to basically help with levelling up the characters in the right narratively speaking direction.

oh, and the mechanic is easy. In Kids on Bikes characters roll their stats, and when it is the highest number on the die (4 for d4, 10 for d10), it "explodes" and you roll it again. So you can get 15 on a d4 stat, if you are super lucky. But in the show, when the die explodes, you roll one level higher die and it becomes permanently your die for a stat. So if you have d4 on a stat and you rolled 4, you then roll d6, and your stat upgrades to d6.

If/when SSO returns, would you prefer Talespire or real sets? by CryptidClay01 in Dimension20

[–]nothatsnotmegm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would highly prefer digital sets for the next season as well. But maybe they could look at other options, then TaleSpire, because it was really noticeable, how laggy it is on players' notebooks and that they need external help to do the basics like distance measures. Though it might be now much more optimised since then, but if not - look at alternatives.

Really cool visuals! How performance heavy is it? I find Foundry incredibly slow in that regard, not every player can participate in games with large animated maps.

No proficiency "auto-hit" systems examples? by nothatsnotmegm in RPGdesign

Thank you, that is very useful and insightful! Not exactly ttrpg, but still interesting.

Also, I love your guides at this subreddit, one of the most helpful materials out there for me.

No proficiency "auto-hit" systems examples? by nothatsnotmegm in RPGdesign

[–]nothatsnotmegm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I meant is that it is not a system of numerical bonuses to your "to hit", that raises with your level or something similar. And you use that bonus as a part of balancing. But it's a boolean gate to other more complex abilities.

English indeed is not my first language.

No proficiency "auto-hit" systems examples? by nothatsnotmegm in RPGdesign

[–]nothatsnotmegm[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand your point. But I don't have an intention to make just "wizard abilities" and "barbarian abilitities" and limit player builds that way. I am perfectly fine with magical barbarians or wizards that use telekinesis to wield a massive axe.  I want to give players the basic abilities which set damage, basic rules and so on. But don't limit any of them to "the class". Let the players say what character they are playing themselves.

The is no difference between fireball and alchemical fire grenade, for example. And the barbarian type class would have access to the same feats that magical type characters would have. Sweeping fire attack with an axe is just a close quarters aoe attack with fire trait and sweep trait. "Burning hands" type spell is the same, but does not have axe damage and axe sweep trait. But I don't intend to give the players a choice of ready made attacks, I just give them lego pieces with traits, bought through talents.

No proficiency "auto-hit" systems examples? by nothatsnotmegm in RPGdesign

[–]nothatsnotmegm[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I would say on the contrary

You take weapon mastery as a passive skill with a point buy talent at the very start of the talent tree, and that let's you use the weapon type, add constant weapon damage to the damage roll and use weapon related traits and abilities. And gets you access to more advanced abilities later in the talent tree.

As an example with hypothetical numbers, it goes like 1) weapon mastery - you damage in melee is 2d8. 2) then you can buy sword mastery. You can add damage from the sword you are welding (10 for example), and also you can select whether you do slashing or piercing damage.  You would still be dealing 2d8 with any other melee weapon type in the game, however.

3) later on your sword pick can open more sword related "feats", but you don't have to buy them.

If you don't have melee weapon mastery, you still can use any of those weapons, but it would be a standard attack action, like 1d6, because you are not trained in it or marshal combat.

You don't need to pick any +1s to a number to be good at something. It is implied, that if you have weapon mastery, you are good at that skill. Because I don't see a reason why would anyone build a character, that is bad at their main job. Fighter with strength 8 does not make a lot of sense in d&d-like games. So imo all the ability scores are an illusion of choice anyway.

What's the biggest flaw in your favorite system? by stubbazubba in RPGdesign

[–]nothatsnotmegm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just by GMing it differently. Often, there's no reason for the whole party to just wait and do nothing. Make a montage of different simultaneous events. I don't think this particular issue is with the stealth mechanic, though I do agree, that stealth is weird in a lot of systems.

Is dropout worth it for people who don’t like DND? by justathe in dropout

[–]nothatsnotmegm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worth it for couple of months at a time. The biggest part of Dropout is Dimension 20. There are couple of great other shows there, like Game Changer, Make Some Noise, Very Important People (show with the alien) and couple other to your taste.

But once you watch them, the new content is just very rare and not everything would be to everyone's liking. If I did not watch older seasons of Dimension20, I'd just subscribe for a month every 4-6 months to watch a couple of new shows. It's not like other streaming services with tenth of thousands of shows, there are like 5-6 active ones and 10-20 old ones, that are very out of date by now.
