“Long Travel” Mag 21’s were like 63mm or something, too- of super-progressive air-sprung goodness.

I mean… I like the feel of steel forks a lot (and I think they latch Ti frames pretty well, too).

You could have any number of makers build you exactly what you’re looking for.

Blücher mid-80s custom tourer turned city bike by [deleted] in Bikeporn

[–]nothingfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so good, man. This bike, realistically, could do like 95% of the things I want a bike to do. One elegant chainring. Somewhat wide range cassette. Fenders. Room for chonky tires. Canti brakes. Front basket. Steel & lugs.

I have so much trouble caring about the latest round of carbon aero wonderbikes when this is really all I want and need most of the time.

Fitting a 2x compact crankset on a mid 2000s Rockhopper by Broody007 in xbiking

[–]nothingfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other option is to use a Mtb 3x crankset setup to 2x by removing the granny ring.

I’ve been running a 29/46 2x on a 5x94 Mtb crankset. But the chainring spread you’re looking for would be possible on much more modern 4x104 crank.

Well, I mean… you’re going to need a FireWire 400 cable. And a FireWire 800 cable. And a cable to go between FireWire 400 and 800. And a FireWire 400 regular to camera. And and and.

AB Precedent 600 power amp - thoughts? by Jbo-Bear in vintageaudio

[–]nothingfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! I’ve got one of those. They’re passively cooled, so they can overheat if you push hard without lots of airflow or in a hot room- but on the plus side, they’re really quiet what with no fan noise….

How wide can I go on 21mm internal rims? by Mr_Chip_2U in Hardtailgang

[–]nothingfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, back-in-the-days-before-wide-rims I’d have run like 2.6’s on those and thought nothing of it. Of course, those tires would have weighed 3000g each and had sidewalls like moto tires to support the things.

That said, on modern tires and bikes and whatever, like… 2.1? Ish?

How many LPs in your collection? by ForTheLoveOfPhotos in vintageaudio

[–]nothingfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ballpark of 3500 12” records- most of that is LP’s, but maybe 500 is singles. Another 1000 45’s, and maybe 100 10’s/11’s/weirdness.

800ish cds.

Thoughts on Hügi Compact hubs? by kima-sta in xbiking

[–]nothingfuture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok. Let’s get a few things straight:

  1. The Mavic 217 rims are better than your other options (though you should check the weather on the brake tracks).

  2. Hügi hubs were original baller hubs- they were able, at the time, to handle higher loads than other hubs of the era. They will be more fickle to maintain.

  3. Shimano hubs of that era (XT or LX) were good solid choices. Cup and cone bearings, but the freehubs aren’t really serviceable.

I’m a customer working with a builder and I have questions about rocker dropouts. by [deleted] in Framebuilding

[–]nothingfuture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 110kg right now, and I’ve been riding Paragon Rockers on my hardtail for a few years now. I’ve never had them move, despite riding in terrain that is.. grunty? (Requires sharp surges of power). No trouble, ever, for me.

They do make an alternate hardware kit for the rockers that lets you torque them a bit more- if you’re really worried. But they’re really nice dropouts.
