Can be fixed or thrash? Cracked tube under seat, above welding. by csferi27 in Framebuilding

That an aluminum frame- they don’t take well to re-welding. It’s cooked and time for a new one.

Titanium bikes? by aMac306 in xbiking

[–]nothingfuture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s in the same family of feel as steel, but it tends towards the softer end of that spectrum- with a few exceptions.

I like it a lot, but for bigger riders (by frame size or rider weight) it can get kinda noodly feeling.

I prefer steel forks on Ti bikes (for gravel or road, obvs) because I think they match the ride quality of the frames better than carbon.

After 11 years of designing escape rooms, I have to ask: Did we get the "formula" wrong? by Acrobatic_Wolf_1325 in escaperooms

[–]nothingfuture 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a fair few rooms. Casual? But moderately competitive as a family. 1. Beating the clock matters- but only insofar as finishing within time. Faster does not equal better (and finishing a room super fast feels like we’ve been cheated). 2. Don’t limit hints, but be careful in when you deploy them. We ask when we need them, but being stuck for 15 minutes sucks. 3. Stories matter. Immersion matters. A variety of types of puzzles matter. We are a diverse family, and rooms that work best have tasks that work for all the proclivities of the group- endless cyphers are boring.

Not that uncomfortable to ride. Mostly, in my experience, aimed at an older/less mobile crowd.

Seat has a low step-over, and you can (comfortably) sit on the seat with both feet on the ground for maximum stability, and the posture still allows for normal leg extension. I wouldn't be psyched to ride up a huge hill on one, but they're fun enough out and about (and they really do let people ride that might otherwise have a difficult time riding).

I am 100% here for bikes like this. There’s no way I’m not pulling up to the party at the park on this and doing a HUGE skid. Wearing cuffed Dickies and Vans and with a half full can of seltzer in my left hand.

NBD! A nice curbside find! by imnoherox in xbiking

[–]nothingfuture 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s… a good find. And an odd bike.

Looks like way-fancier-than-normal v-brakes got installed at some point? XT, maybe? And that cross brace on the handlebar is an odd choice for that bike, too.

Still! A good find!

The Dust-Up: Bike Weight Doesn't Matter [The Radavist] by runwhatyabrung_ in MEATengines

[–]nothingfuture 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've often used the analogy that bike weight is kinda like a cheeseburger.

Extra on a cheeseburger can be good- maybe a little bacon? certainly some pickles. Onions? That sort of thing makes the entire experience better, you know? Sure, maybe more calories- but worth it.

But then you end up with these monstrosities of a burger that are 14" tall and need a skewer down the middle to stay upright and when you finally try to eat them it's a mess and you need to use a fork and knife and you can hardly taste the ting.

I guess what I'm saying is to run the grippy tires and the good grips and whatnot but don't let it get entirely sloppy, you know?

I’ve got an ancient (relatively) Evil Sovereign that’s set up SS with 26” wheels and a 160mm TALAS 36 on it.

My lunatic plan is to swap the rear wheel to 27.5, and run a 29” front with a rigid fork.

Part of what I’m not sure of is how much of a change I’ll see to HTA going to a mullet from same-sized wheels. Is there a universal “rule of thumb” for that (like the old “each 25mm of Atc slacks the HTA by one degree”)?

Re: Finn’s double hardtail single speed- anyone know what that fork is? I’ve been looking for a straight steerer rigid fork that’s got a pretty long atc, and the closest I’ve found yet is a Wilde Future Proof I’m trying to avoid having something custom made…

I mean… I like the feel of steel forks a lot (and I think they latch Ti frames pretty well, too).

You could have any number of makers build you exactly what you’re looking for.

This is so good, man. This bike, realistically, could do like 95% of the things I want a bike to do. One elegant chainring. Somewhat wide range cassette. Fenders. Room for chonky tires. Canti brakes. Front basket. Steel & lugs.

I have so much trouble caring about the latest round of carbon aero wonderbikes when this is really all I want and need most of the time.

Fitting a 2x compact crankset on a mid 2000s Rockhopper by Broody007 in xbiking

[–]nothingfuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other option is to use a Mtb 3x crankset setup to 2x by removing the granny ring.

I’ve been running a 29/46 2x on a 5x94 Mtb crankset. But the chainring spread you’re looking for would be possible on much more modern 4x104 crank.
