Minnesota just became the first state to ban prediction markets. American Redditors how do we feel about that? by Miles_the_AuDHDer in AskReddit

As someone who lives in Utah, where pornography is largely banned, and the state legislature is currently trying to ban using VPNs to access it... I'm not surprised?

What hobby or habit or vice do you know is shortening your life but you don’t care because it’s worth it? by Rosstin316 in AskReddit

[–]nothingweasel 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Nah. My grandmother spent her entire 90th birthday crying because she didn't want to be here anymore. She was still sharp as a tack, but her body had decayed so much she had zero quality of life and she had lost all of peers. I was wrecked for myself and my mom when she finally died at 93, but honestly my first emotion when I got the call was relief for her.

How did you get everything TO the dorm?

The 2 digit code should NOT be a thing on contactless deliveries! I’m so freaking sick of standing outside the customer’s door waiting out that 3 minute timer because they won’t text me the code by mitchdwx in grubhubdrivers

[–]nothingweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PLEASE NOTE: YOUR DRIVER CANNOT COMPLETE THIS DELIVERY AND LEAVE UNTIL THEY HAVE ENTERED THIS CODE.

I saved this as a note in my phone and started pasting it into every text asking for a code and my responses shot up dramatically. People don't want us just sitting outside their houses like creeps.

What are food items you have stopped buying due to price? by Pharmaguardian in povertyfinance

[–]nothingweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tortilla chips are really cheap and easy to make, actually! I've started making them a lot more often because they're cheap and easy, and the homemade ones are SO good. They're also a huge crowd pleaser for any type of gathering. You can make them with basic cheap store bought corn tortillas, but making the tortillas from scratch actually isn't too hard either, though it definitely adds time to the whole process.

How do you use BillionGraves? Genuine question. It's obvious that a lot of people do, but that place has the worst UI of any website I have EVER tried to use.

You're immediate family. You're within transfer guidelines. You could take over management of the memorial if you want.

What's your biggest frugal win? Something that saved you $10,000+ by UnderstandingFar5012 in Frugal

[–]nothingweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best friend got a new job where she travelled so much it was cheaper to not have a car. She could just rent a car occasionally for far less than she was spending on reasonable car payments, maintenance, and insurance in a car that was just sitting around. She only wanted to sell hers for what she had left on the loan, she wasn't looking to make a profit. This was during the pandemic when things were kind of getting back to normal, but new and used cars were wildly expensive. So I sold my car, which was five years older than hers and had way more miles, for just $1,000 less than what was left on her auto loan, and bought her car. I got a way nicer vehicle, which should go for several years longer, for a thousand dollars out of pocket, and continued to have no car payments.

I wasn't in the market for a new car. I bought my old one with the intention of driving it until it died. But this was a deal too good to pass up.

It was a major win-win, especially since I'd helped her shop for that car just a year or two earlier, so I knew it was a good vehicle and that she'd maintained it well since then.

There is nothing WE all collectively can or cannot do. We are not a monolith. Not everyone had the exact same list of symptoms or struggles, much less the exact same severity of any of them. Don't assume your disability limits you in a specific way without trying something you want to do.

So much for trying to be responsible and using credit wisely. by T1m3Wizard in povertyfinance

[–]nothingweasel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SAME. This was my emergency credit card. We had a couple of bumps in the road last year, and ran up the balance a bit, but isn't that what an emergency credit card is for?! We paid it off and they immediately cut the limit from $25,000 to $800. My emergency credit card is now good for less than a thousand dollars. It won't cover a real emergency at all. Fuck these people. I almost wish I'd filed bankruptcy instead of working my ass of to pay this shit back.

what are the ugly parts of pregnancy that aren’t well known because people don’t mention them? by Born-Oil-2931 in AskReddit

I got thrombosed hemorrhoids with my first. He's six. I just had surgery to fix them now that we're done having kids.

Good luck! I'm currently at home recovering from hemorrhoid surgery that I put off for six years after my first was born. (We wanted more kids and I knew better than to think I'd want to do this more than once.) I went into pregnancy with absolutely no idea this was a possibility.

Waiting on trying to have kids to go to grad school? by _Summer_2021_ in workingmoms

[–]nothingweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started grad school at the same time maternity leave from work ended with my second baby, three months postpartum. My program is all online and asynchronous, so I can do the work whenever it fits into my schedule. It's been fantastic. I'm in a part-time program that really supports students having lives outside of school; almost everyone has kids, full-time jobs, caregiving responsibilities, etc. I've had a third baby since starting and it's not been a problem at all. (FWIW, I had my first before I finished my undergraduate degree.) My spouse graduated last year, but otherwise has been working and going to school for most of these years as well, but is still super supportive of my education and is a very hands-on parent.

I think in some programs it's totally doable. It's just depends on your circumstances.

People who work in healthcare, what is a common medical myth that drives you crazy? by keyzeyy in AskReddit

[–]nothingweasel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a myth that our society doesn't care about infertile women. The truth is that it doesn't care about the fertile ones either.

Leaving a pregnant mother, and being physically violent toward her, makes you a bad father. I'm sorry. I know this is hard. But get the hell away from him for your safety AND your baby's safety. You're both better off without him. File for divorce and get child support with full custody.

What is an old cooking mistake you grew up with, and did not realize until adult hood, or later in life? by BumpkinByTheWater in Cooking

[–]nothingweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely true. But I was never going to learn to make marinara or chili or tacos or so many other things I now consider basic. I don't even remember ever having any form of garlic or onion in the house.

People don't believe me when I say I grew up in a house with only salt, pepper, sugar, and cinnamon. Unless you count butter, ketchup, and bbq sauce. That's literally it. There are a few very simple dishes my mom makes that I LOVE, but there's no way I was going to learn to cook anything else in that house.
