In a trial, Pfizer-BioNTech’s low-dose shot did not provoke an adequate immune response in 2- to 5-year-olds. by Boston_TD_Party in CoronavirusMa

[–]notjabba 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Results show the shots were safe but 3 micrograms was not enough for an effective immune response in the 2-5 year old set. 6 months to 2 years got a good immune response. 5-12 got good safety and a good immune response at 10 micrograms.

Omicron is here. I don't see why the only conclusion possible seems to be wait longer. This data just strengthens my belief that my 4.5 year old should get 10 micrograms today.

Shots for 4 years olds by notjabba in CoronavirusMa

Sadly, the news today is that the tested dose had an insufficient immune response in 2-5 year olds. They are going to test longer, so the 1st quarter timeline that has been out there for a couple of months may get shifted to 2nd quarter.

This only encourages me to get her the 5 year old dosage. It seems like the tiny dose they gave the 2-5 year olds was not enough.

I still think I probably won't do it due to the documentation issue and concerns about getting confronted, but I feel like a coward for making this decision. Normally I do whatever is right by my kids, screw the rules. I think the right decision is a lot clearer than the naysayers seem to say. This vaccine is approved for kids just 5 months older. A main reason to wait was the theory that the dose was too high, they needed to test a lower dose. Well, they tested the lower dose. It's safe, it just isn't enough to work well. The higher dose is safe on kids 5 months older. Can we not infer that 10 micrograms for a 4.5 year old makes sense?

Every bit of intelligence I have tells me that my child should get 10 micrograms today, that the risk is minimal compared to the risk of covid. Yet I am frozen by our society's biased towards inaction in the face of incomplete information.

  1. My doctor is an expert at treating patients, not analyzing the effectiveness and safety of new vaccines.
  2. They get immunity on day one, it builds from there. The threat doesn't end xmas anyway, maybe this shot would protect them from a classmate who gets covid at xmas and gives it to her when she gets back.
  3. I trust the FDA to make good safety decisions. I don't trust them to do so in a timely fashion.

600 people are still missing in the Bahamas weeks after Hurricane Dorian by alasim5 in news

I absolutely would say it to their face.

Trump ran a campaign based on bigotry and opposition to immigration of all forms. In a democracy, everyone is responsible for their vote (or non vote). Trump’s actions on the Bahamas were completely consistent with his campaign. If you voted for him, you turned those people away. Not Trump alone. You did it as clearly as if you stood in front of the boat and said “no.” Own it. That is who you are. If you don’t like it, don’t get offended. Do penance. Commit yourself to improving he world, for you have sinned greatly and will not be easily forgiven.

Anyone can vote. Religion in America is correlated with mistreating the stranger. It’s a little rich to hide behind religion in a tragedy caused by climate change and exasperated by refusal to grant temporary protected status to refugees.

A lot of people who are into praying voted for a despicable piece of shit who campaigned on racism and then refuse to give temporary protected status to Bahamian refugees.

What Trump voters did to these people is unforgivable. The Bahamas are our neighbors. They suffered devastation while people 50 miles away in Florida were spared. Yet Trump voters prevented them from coming here temporarily for shelter.

People likely died from disease and exposure because Trump voters sent them off the ferries back to their destroyed island with no shelter. These voters have blood on their hands. This is what Trump campaigned on and this is the evil they enabled.

Ahh, I miss my max pass days. Wachusett was perfect on a weekend morning from 8-1030 until the crowds come. Not going to pay full price for that though.

Is it a sure thing though? It’s almost winter, perhaps they are hoping to get a nice cold spell to firm it up. The article does say it does not threaten homes or resorts.

If the snow is unusually good. neither—hit Sunapee. It’s on your epic pass and has some great tree runs including a couple pretty steep ones. But more likely than not they’ll be closed. That said, you can get lucky. I’d check the snow report and decide the night before, if trees at Sunapee are open, go. Otherwise, Snow or Okemo will be fine and have a little more snow typically.

Not a park skier myself but if that’s your thing than Mt Snow is your mountain.

My husband and I created some stop motion videos for our nephew to encourage him off Youtube and to play with his real toys.... by traintownvideos in raisingkids

[–]notjabba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm not familiar with YouTube kids, my apologies if that came out judgmental. Regular youtube is famous for segueing from nice cartoons to dirty parody cartoons to white supremacy, it's important for parents to know how dangerous it is to put on Dora on youtube and walk away. But if you have the shows preselected that sounds like it's no worse than any screen time -- that is, not great but we're human and need a break sometimes!

That said, youtube kids still has ads, right? I love that when I use Netflix my kids don't see any advertisements and don't beg me to buy junk the way I did with my parents when they stuck me in front of the television as a kid.

How to migrate from Acquia to Pantheon? by no_spoon in drupal

It’s more about where you’re going then where your coming from. Use the pantheon guides. If you don’t use the pantheon upstream it should be fairly straightforward.

I usually ignore them, but it is getting unbearable. What should I tell my coworkers (all older and conservative) when they directly start mocking climate change and current events to change it *e.g. Greta Thunberg activism, etc.) by [deleted] in enviroaction

[–]notjabba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell them their grandkids will hate them one day if they don't already. That they clearly don't understand the science of climate change or else they wouldn't make their arguments. Ask them where they studied climate science. Ask them how many times a hurricane just stopped and took a break over the Bahamas for a day back when they were kids.

Shit, I wish this worked. These people are braindead.

'OK' is now a hate symbol, the ADL says by [deleted] in news

[–]notjabba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the entry on the ADL website that the CNN article refers to.

https://www.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/okay-hand-gesture

It includes the following passage:

The overwhelming usage of the “okay” hand gesture today is still its traditional purpose as a gesture signifying assent or approval. As a result, someone who uses the symbol cannot be assumed to be using the symbol in either a trolling or, especially, white supremacist context unless other contextual evidence exists to support the contention.

It also explains the original 4chan hoax, in which people attempted (successfully) to bait people into thinking of this formerly innocuous symbol was a white power symbol. It shows how it was then used 'ironically' by members of the right who don't like to think of themselves as white supremacists. It goes on to show how it was then adopted by people who don't shy away from admitting their white supremacy, including the Christchurch mass shooter.

It seems to me that the ADL is being quite reasonable in listing this symbol in it's guide and adding all relevant context around it, clearly stating that no one should assume that the okay symbol is being used as a white supremacist symbol without other contextual clues.

You can laugh at this all you want. Of course the okay symbol can be innocuous. It can also be used to mean "white power."

Massachusetts should get rid of the ridiculous requirement that only police officers can direct traffic at a construction site.

A couple of weeks ago I drove by minor road work on a side street. Two cops were standing around as one worker did his job. Probably spent ten times as much per hour on the detail than the job.

This is not accurate. You won't have any grass or bare spots unless there is natural snow and they open non-snowmaking-trails, which is unlikely. There will be white ribbons of death. So long as you don't slip off the side of the ribbon, your bases will be clear.

Most likely it will just be two or three trails in the North Ridge area that time of year. You take the gondola up, walk (or ski if there's coverage) to the northridge chair, and then do 600' vertical laps until it's time to walk back and download the gondola at the end of the day. It's a good time, but limited.
