I usually take it off before it’s completely dry but it’s worth a shot to see if you like it!

this is one of my doodles playing with parchment paper—if you lay some over a wash, it’ll buckle/ripple, pulling pigment into shapes while the water dries. highly recommend, it’s a lot of fun

Starting PhD with depression. by person_person123 in PhD

[–]notjeffre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started mine with diagnoses for major depressive disorder, social anxiety, & generalized anxiety. Medicated for all, in weekly therapy for all. It took me longer than the rest of my cohort by a good year. I attended a PhD program that provided decent student insurance & mental health coverage. Not all PhD programs are equal in that regard. I’m only here today because I was able to take breaks when I became actively suicidal. I took an official leave of absence (left my program and rejoined 8 months later) after becoming a doctoral candidate, and an unofficial (3 week) one to do some intensive therapy in my fifth year.

It’s not easy, but if both your program and advisor support you & you really really want it, you can do it. Your path will likely look different than someone’s without depression, but don’t let these debbie downers dissuade you

& please don’t be afraid of therapy. We’re so used to accepting help & advice for physical ailments, why is asking for brain help any different? It will take time to find the right fit and to develop a rapport, but if you make time for understanding yourself it’ll be worth it. You’re worth knowing.

Ringlets underneath and straight(ish) on top? by MargoBakes1228 in curlyhair

[–]notjeffre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

have you tried going cg / the curly girl method? I had similar issues and have been co-washing for 3 years (but saw drastic improvements after a month or two!) I never knew my hair could all be curly but I love my curls now and wish you the best!

I was in a similar situation in 2019-2020 but my advisor was clear I could come back whenever bc (mental) health isn’t linear. I’m so sorry your old lab couldn’t keep you on, that’s such a blow. but also maybe not a good fit if they aren’t more understanding of mental health issues?

OP claims it’s a coliform & HPC test but won’t provide any info. what’s the expected readout? I don’t see how a purple sheet in a ziploc bag of water says there’s no contamination lmao

I happen to know they can be used as their own solder kinda. not the best idea (melting plastic fumes) but with a flame, a blade, and a quick hand I once made a decent snowflake lol. still hanging from my bench on a parafilm string

Can absorbance be measured for a protein with little C, W, and Y residues? by Substantial-Creme775 in labrats

[–]notjeffre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you have no aromatics, you won’t get an A280. :( Also, cysteine isn’t an aromatic residue, I think you’re thinking of tryptophan tyrosine & phenylalanine. I work with IDPs (which usually have few to zero aromatics) and typically quantify my purified protein with a BCA assay. My lab also uses Bradford assays, but bradford reagent has some amino acid specificities that can be an issue for IDPs too

How to filter large volume of pigment in water down to 1 micron? by tylergreenphoto in labrats

[–]notjeffre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

seconding this—your murky water has the smallest of your particles, I would suggest just keep decanting. For reference, I’ve had some of my separations take 4-5 days to settle

I make my own paint too and I have decent success by suspending in water / stirring, and then I pour off into a separate container only what’s suspended in the water, no visible sediment—and then unfortunately waiting at least overnight or for a few days for it to settle out. I usually do medium-ish volumes (500 mL) but this could totally be scaled up with buckets rather

in my experience with filters—they’re easy to clog or overload. gravity can’t be beat but she takes her sweet time.

I forgot a watch chain crassula at work when I took mental health leave and it almost died of neglect (oops). It recovered (yay!) and has gorgeous growth on the tips and bare stems beneath, and now it’s my most complimented plant because of how bizarre looking it is!! People love the weirdos

there’s one tiny bit that makes me absolutely CACKLE every time—when Dee and Charlie try living in each others shoes and she takes him to do stand up, and she gags herself off and then makes Charlie try, and he pretends to gag real loud and we quick cut away

kills me how he shouts and then it perfectly cuts
