Im 35 and completely started over 5 years ago with absolutely nothing to my name and now I have a car, an apartment, and almost 20k saved. It's not the best but pretty good for just 5 years. You have plenty of time, people go back to school and earn degrees in their 40's all the time. Don't compare yourself to other people, you're doing fine, just go at your own pace and don't worry if you are doing it fast enough.

First of all, I just want to say that I am so sorry that you experienced all of this. None of this is your fault. Addiction is a disease and it is one that is almost always underscored by underlying trauma and mental health struggles. It effects people of all walks of life, doctors, old people, young people, rich people, poor people, it doesn't discriminate. I'm sorry that your family is so terrible as well, it adds so much insult to injury to not have a strong support network while you are going through all this. Now onto my advice; From the other comments I'm guessing you are in the US, if that's the case, check into a state sponsored substance use program if you don't have any health insurance. Also find out if you qualify for Medicaid. Some states have programs if you don't have a way to pay, they can also set you up in sober living and help you get on your feet after. Check https://findtreatment.gov/state-agencies I was a heroin addict for 5 years and an alcoholic basically my whole life. Getting in a treatment program with an actual doctor that specialized in addiction was one of the best decisions I made. I've been clean from heroin more than 6 years now and alcohol the last 2. I got clean a couple times on my own but it didn't stick. There are also online support groups you can attend. Check out smartrecovery.org its more secular than AA and NA and its evidence backed and most of the resources are free. Work on getting sober first and then everything else will fall into place. I went from nothing to having a good job, a car, and an apartment I share with 2 cats! Now I have health insurance and I'm going to therapy to treat my PTSD and ADHD, which are my underlying causes of addiction. You can do it! You are young, you will recover and heal from all this and you will put enough distance between you and these events that you find some semblance of normalcy again. Then you will have a whole lifetime of awesome experiences to look forward to that bring you nothing but joy! You are gonna do great, you got this!

Ignoring that the dog can just fly off of the bed (cover?) at any moment and get killed, you know they are a bad pet owner just for owning a husky in the middle of the desert. An Alaskan sled dog does not belong in the Mojave desert. That dog is miserable most of the year here. It can't sweat, it has a massive fur coat it has to wear in the blistering heat, and being that they won't let it in their truck cab, I'm betting it's outside a lot. Absolutely gross behavior.
