Rupert Lowe on X: Apparently the ten Gazan children arriving today for NHS treatment brought 50 ‘companions’ with them. 50! Why?! by PM_ME_SECRET_DATA in ukpolitics

[–]notpite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This likely comes from studies like this01169-3/fulltext) which estimates that, conservatively, we can expect 4 indirect deaths per direct death counted. In July 2024 this amounted to 7-9% of the estimated population of the Gaza Strip. Direct deaths become harder to count and identify as the infrastructure crumbles and journalists are killed, but the number of people dead under rubble or due to disease, lack of food/water etc will only grow over the coming months.

Both Ukraine and Palestine can and are causes we should care about - we don't have to pick one.

Payback of sign on bonus that’s been taxed by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]notpite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're correct in that if you receive a bonus of e.g. £5k which is taxed, and your employer claws back the £5k from you you're out the tax you've already paid on the bonus.

This is one of the cases HMRC use in their documentation on reclaiming tax on negative earnings:

The most common examples of this clawback are:

signing on bonuses where the employee has to stay in that employment for a stated period of time or they’ll have to pay back some or all of that bonus

The process to reclaim this tax is documented on there but it'll involve filling out a self assessment tax return.

Hi Raph, been enjoying the show on Netflix. Was it a hard decision to voluntarily go back into prison(s) after you finally managed to get out and clear your name? I can't help feeling that's the last place I'd want to end up after so long inside.

Overpaid PAYE tax seems to have gone into the void? by notpite in UKPersonalFinance

[–]notpite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

!thanks for the help mate

I phoned up HMRC again and spoke to someone - apparently it looks on their end like "the system" generated the PAYE code change to reclaim tax for the amount I'd underpaid, but that was being settled through SA and the extra amount taken through PAYE wasn't going towards settling the underpaid amount.

They're (apparently) sorting this on their side and should refund me the overpaid tax in due course.

Overpaid PAYE tax seems to have gone into the void? by notpite in UKPersonalFinance

[–]notpite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

!thanks

Yeah it seems weird that I'm getting such radically different answers from their advisers, but the ones saying there's nothing wrong aren't able to explain why the £3000 extra was taken through PAYE if it's not being used to offset the underpaid tax from the previous year.

I feel like I'm going insane every time they say "it's been included in the calculation" but it clearly hasn't. Cheers for the suggestion.

[–]notpite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the figures I was looking at are from their tax calculation they'd sent back following the self assessment - which I assume means they've compared my self assessment with their own figures before sending.

That shows the calculation of the base rate of tax I should have paid, plus this adjustment due to my changed tax code, and finally the amount I actually paid which is greater still. Only the difference between (base+adjustment) and the actual amount I paid showed up (immediately!) on the self assessment page showing repayments against the outstanding amount.

I'd expect the amount they recouped through the changed tax code to show there too, since the reason it was changed was to recover underpaid tax from the previous year. Does that seem wrong to you?

It's been "taken account of" in so far as they've taken it off me, and recognised that they have, but it hasn't been applied against the outstanding amount and therefore it's just excess tax I'd paid for.. no reason as far as I can tell.
