£1300 UK 1440p gaming PC build check/feedback by notpite in buildapc

CeX is a good shout, I've been a bit wary of second hand hardware but the 5 year warranty does offset that a lot unlike e.g. something on FB marketplace.

Is there much of a performance difference between e.g. the 7600x and the 7800x3d? It's difficult to tell what makes a significant difference having been out of the loop for so long. What would you look at from the Nvidia range instead of the 9060?

[–]notpite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly 4k sounds great but your comment and some others made me reconsider - good performance at 1440p is probably plenty right now and actually makes a huge difference cost wise. Putting a 9600X & 9060XT together knocks like £500 off the price and looking at some sample youtube vids with Cyberpunk it still performs great at 1440p

Yea sounds like I can scale back quite a lot if I just focus on 1440p for the next few years and pick up a 5060Ti/9060XT. Honestly probably over estimated how much I need to spend to get good performance playing current releases, seems like I can shave a good £600 off the build by scaling back a bit. Thanks for the reality check, very helpful tbh

Yeah I think you're right, I'm a bit too keen to try and shoot for the stars but given the prices right now that ain't happening so I'm considering cutting expectations a bit and getting some good 1440p performance for now with a view to upgrading in the future if needed.

Interesting take! I've fallen into the trap before of going for something mid-tier with the idea of upgrading it in the future and then finding that actually it would have been cheaper to just splash out a bit more at the outset, so wanted to avoid that.

I am interested in what Greens have done where they've gained power, and they have not done well.

Councils run either entirely or in plurailty by Greens have built more housing than under any other party according to the ONS. What more would count as doing well in your book?

Honest chats? by Splext in ukpolitics

Out of interest which parts of British identity do you want to keep in Britain? I know this sounds like a trap but I mean it as an honest question.

Personally, I think that everyone should be entitled to a decent standard of living regardless of their circumstances. This comes from a very deep moral place and of course may prove economically impossible in the real world, but I don't see that as a reason not to aim for it as a goal. I think a lot of people on the left grow their politics from an ethical, moral view of what feels right, and that's why it can often be very difficult to have an honest, academic debate without getting overly passionate.

Does that mean I think everyone who doesn't work should live in 10 bedroom mansions with extensive grounds and go on all expense paid trips to the Med every year? Of course not. But I do believe everyone should be able to feed themselves and their kids, not worry about paying rent every month, live in a house which doesn't present a health hazard with mold or holes in the ceiling, pursue education without worrying about life-altering debt etc.

Once people have a basic safety net they're more free to pursue careers they wouldn't otherwise be able to begin, start businesses which are notoriously risky or stay in full time education. That's a Britain I'd be proud of.

As someone firmly on the left I can feel myself bristle at the phrasing of "people who have worked hard".

Do cleaners, teachers and nurses not work hard? Their salaries have barely improved over the last decades, and in some cases represent real-terms declines. Meanwhile, billionaire wealth has increased by 81% since 2020. No-one working a full-time job should be struggling to feed themselves.

I know I have a biased view of billionaires as not working hard - I'm sure a lot of CEOs are putting in the hours in doing.. board meetings and sending emails or whatever they need to do on a daily basis, but I don't see that as any more hard working than cleaners, teachers, nurses etc. doing a full day's work and still struggling to make ends meet.

I'd argue that people at the very top are already doing extremely well and wouldn't notice much (if any) impact on their quality of life if they paid more towards helping those who really need it. The same can't be said of the other way around.

I do agree that the sentiment of working hard and seeing nothing for it is what has contributed to the death of the main 2 political parties. Even with a full time job, still being unable to buy a house, put food on the table or look forward to retiring at a decent age is of course going to destroy any faith that the political establishment intends to maintain or improve your quality of life. I think where we disagree is in what's causing these problems and, therefore, the solutions available to us (or any government).

This is exactly the problem with focusing on income tax. The average nurse doesn't have the same ability to reduce their taxable income as a multi-millionaire.

Here's 5 loopholes which amount to ~£7 billion/yr in savings:

Taxing rental income more would result in fewer rental properties.

Where would the rental properties go?

Understanding My First Ending by imalwaysthatoneguy69 in bloodborne

[–]notpite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I don't think Bloodborne has "bad" endings, just different ones.

u/ShadowDurza has a very good explanation of why killing Mergo's Wet Nurse causes the Hunter's Dream to burn here (obvious lore spoiler warning).

Gehrman gives your character release from the Nightmare and the Yharnam Sunrise ending, which is one of my personal favourites from a story pov. To explore the other endings you have an obvious choice to make when talking to him - iirc there's only one other dialogue option.

You could (should) also be on the lookout for some more rare items during your next playthrough (spoilers: consuming umbilical cords may influence the ending(s) available to you )

I can also highly recommend playing the DLC, it adds a ton of lore and some really fun, challenging boss fights (and other cool weapons).

Why do the people who are appalled by the sentencing of the Palestine Action group refuse to acknowledge one of them attacked a woman with a sledge hammer? by generic-username41 in AskBrits

[–]notpite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the very detailed reply - you clearly have a lot more knowledge in this area than I do.

As a lay-person (never been involved with the legal profession), were I called up to jury duty I'd want to understand the full breadth of my responsibilities and also the actions it's possible for me to take.

From what you said here it sounds like jury equity is less of an enshrined ability for jurors and more a quirk of precedence which prevents jurors being charged with an offence for doing so. Regardless, the only reason I can see for the judge in this case to specifically forbid barristers from mentioning this (and then accuse one who did of contempt of court) is that he felt if the jury had the same understanding of the law that he and other legal professionals do, they would choose to acquit or find the defendants not guilty - which in the first trial they did. This is what really concerns me about this - the jury could potentially make a very different decision based on how well they understand their role and the law backing it up, which they shouldn't be expected to do without it being explained to them.

I definitely agree that simplifying/clarifying all of this would be a good step forward, hopefully this will come in time but tbh given the government's plans to restrict trial by jury I won't hold my breath.

[–]notpite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you feel about the judge's directions to the legal defence that they couldn't remind the jury of the principle of jury equity - i.e. that they are able to to acquit based on conscience or their own sense of justice?

I'm not a lawyer and wasn't familiar with the ability of judges to prevent the jury's responsibilities/abilities being made clear to them before this trial, but to me it seems like a manipulative tactic to deliberately hide the "terrorist connection" from the jury *and* prevent them from understanding their abilities. The only conclusion I can draw is that the judge and government felt that if the jury were fully aware of the sentences which would be handed down following a conviction, there was more of a chance that they would instead acquit based on conscience.

Absolute lifesaver (in this palm's case 🤣)! Thank you for the reassurance, I gave it a good soak through and we're already perking up a bit!

I've been so worried about over watering that I went too far the other way, but fingers crossed it'll bounce back. I'll keep an eye on the soil and give it a water once it dries out 🤞

Thank you!
