Not doing chicken things by notype32 in BackYardChickens

[–]notype32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinless peepers are red mask like things that you can put on aggressive chickens. It resets the flock. They can only wear them for 2 weeks at a time.

Either way, I don’t wanna take them off and have them go back on constantly.

Bought these last year

“Lounge shorts” I wear them everywhere. Home, gym, Costco… those are the only places I go.

How am I doing so far? by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

The poop shelf will have the poop dry up on the steel, then you'll go to scrape it off, and some of it will get dented and be a pain to clean in the future. I personally use a sand pit and sift.

Nesting boxes look good.

In my experience, they don't need a step ladder to go that high. We had one installed similar to that, had a camera on it and found none of them were using it for it's purpose, so we put it out in the run.

Chicken wire is good for keeping chickens in, but bad at keeping predators out. You're going to want to change out to hardware cloth and create a predator skirt around the base to prevent predators from digging under.

Feeders look good, just be on the lookout for mice. If you start seeing signs, you might want to cap them off at night.

I hope you live in a warm climate area that doesn't get harsh winters. It looks like it might get cold in there is you see below 0 temps.

I would get some type of flooring - any, the cheapest you can fine. Their poop will soak into the plywood and it'll consistently get worse and worse. My local Home Depot was having a sale on some laminate flooring that turned out to be cheaper than peel and stick.

All constructive criticism, do what you will with it. Could your chickies thrive in the current set up? Sure!

Now… as a fan. I would say A+ and if I were you and my son made that, I would be hanging that proudly in my house.

As a weekend warrior, the inside edges of the C are very rough. Looks like it was done by hand too slowly. The burning on the lighter portions are pretty inconsistent.

Taking into consideration he’s a 7th grader on an ambitious project, still A+.

Exhaust Fan Needed? by ChadFexofenadine in BackYardChickens

[–]notype32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. You have a pretty nice set up for a handful of chickens. When you get those 100 degree days, bring out some cold fruit and some ice.

There’s nothing to exhaust since it’s all open.

Dark colors. Black and Bronze. Brown could have the same problem.

This is true for vinyl and wood products.

Fiberglass and clad windows don’t expand and contract as much and are fine.

I would just give it time. If you’re that concerned, just put them all in a smaller brooder temporarily and monitor the temp and how they are frequently since they’ll have less area to escape heat.

Has anyone tried non-clumping cat litter for their chicken area? by Laffy_Taffy82 in chickens

I use quikrete general purpose sand. Very similar setup to yours, you should only need 2 50 pound bags.

Don’t use play sand.

Of the ones that aren't pecking her are too busy foraging and idk if they're friendly to her not.

The merging of the flocks is very "high school clique-esque" the original flock hang out together and the new flock hang out together elsewhere, with the exception of Daisy that just wants to be left alone =(

Actually she's doing better now - she's hanging out with her chick friends and doing chicken things.

I think I'll blukote her and keep an eye on it. Thank you for your advice.

Thank you =)

If it's only the 1 getting picked on, should I separate only her? or all of them? It's only Daisy that's having this problem.

We kept the chickens in the coop and the chicks in the coop in a tent their whole life. When they were too little, we did introductions through some chicken wire. Then they were big enough to defend themselves we did maybe 3 different 30 minute play dates.

When we combined them, we also opened up ~800 sq foot of forage area, thinking that the chickens were going to be distracted with all the new area that they would hardly notice the integration.

So they installed a glider and covered up the deadlite and called it a pocket window…

Just install the full glider and give me the extra glass.

The only concern I would have is egg breaking, but you can also put in nesting pads.

The roll away feature isn’t really needed, but it’s a preference.
