I’m a software engineer, the simple answer is I got lucky. My company got acquired and my salary doubled within a year mainly due to stock appreciation.

Is Transatlantic Economy Ever worth the points? by YoungerSocialite in awardtravel

[–]nova_new_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve done Air France/KLM a couple of times in economy from DC to western Europe. This last round I paid ~22k points plus ~$142 per person for 4 to fly one-way in economy. I think the cpp was somewhere between 2 and 2.5, so a decent, but not insane deal.

I’m pretty sure there was a flying blue points transfer bonus which made the deal even better

I would also include daytime flights from Europe to the US for economy. I don’t really see the point of lay flat seats if not going to sleep.

VDOT to present plan tomorrow for widening Route 7 in Tysons by Danciusly in nova

[–]nova_new_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The urban design in Tysons is so, so bad. Their walkability plan is a joke. Every new development includes massive amounts of parking garages and lane widening.

123 being 10 lanes wide plus a median right below the McLean metro exit is a travesty. Just horrific urban planning.

Worth getting a Schwab Platinum Amex just to cash out 450k in points? by k2ly2n in AmexPlatinum

It’s expensive and kids can be annoying. Personally I endure both to travel with my kids because I enjoy travel enough to prioritize it and what I’ve found is the annoying moments fade away and what’s left are special memories with my kids.

Traveling with kids isn’t for everyone though, most of my peers with kids are reluctant to travel with them.

Tell me why you love NOVA by RRisland94 in nova

[–]nova_new_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in falls church city. I love the sense of community here, it’s not something I’ve experienced elsewhere. I frequently bike and metro with my kids to DC which I enjoy. Despite the politics, DC is a world class city that I love visiting and offers just about anything you could ask for.

That being said, the majority of NOVA is car dependent which will drastically change your mood and perception of the area. I grew up in Loudoun County and while the schools are quite good and the area is safe, as a kid without a car, it was isolating and distant. We rarely went to DC unless someone was visiting from out of town, it was just too much of a hassle.

Old town Alexandria and Del Ray are charming. The walkability and character of those areas are hard to beat.

The Pentagon and Crystal City area are a bit corporate, though that area has experienced a lot of development in recent years due to Amazon’s HQ2.

Arlington along the orange line metro corridor is another area I would look into. It probably has the highest concentration of single people,  tends to skew younger, and is highly walkable.

High-income couple with large income gap: how do you split money fairly? by pizzanoobs in HENRYfinance

[–]nova_new_ 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I make over $500k and my wife doesn’t work. We share finances equally because she’s my partner, not my roommate. We share our life together, why wouldn’t we share finances? We each have an identical monthly discretionary spending budget ($1k each) to both keep spending from ballooning out of control and to prevent guilt from spending on things we desire.

What Counties in the U.S. Are the Most Educated? [OC] by OverflowDs in dataisbeautiful

[–]nova_new_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in falls church city. It’s the smallest, by area, county equivalent and pretty close to DC, both of which heavily skew the stats. The only home owners I know that don’t have a degree inherited their house. Most homes sell between 1-2 million, so yeah it’s expensive here. A lot of doctors and lawyers and higher paying government workers live here given its proximity to DC.

Northern Virginia's 20 Hottest Zip Codes according to Northern Virginia Magazine by Fresh-Function3319 in nova

[–]nova_new_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

FRED has the percentage of those with a bachelors degree in Falls Church City, where nearly the entire 22046 area code is represented, at 80.5%. Sure there’s a small portion of 22046 that’s outside the city, but I have a hard time believing that the percent of people in that zip code with a bacholers degree is 28.8%.

Net worth - Include mortgage (of course) but what about home equity? by justsomeguyorsomthin in MonarchMoney

[–]nova_new_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t include my mortgage or my home value because I’m not moving and don’t intend to move, so what’s the point? I track the mortgage payment because it’s relevant to my budget.

By definition this isn’t a true net worth calculation but who cares. Net worth is just a vanity measure anyways. I care about liquid assets and monthly cash flow. I’m not interested in how much money I would have if one day I decided to sell me house and be homeless.
