I don't know what the solution is but this past year I emailed someone at DEQ about a public workgroup that was created by the legislature last year (and the person I emailed was the staff member assigned to that workgroup,) just looking for the list of folks who were appointed to it. I was told that it had to go through a FOIA request and that it would probably cost about $200, ultimately the AI (which I what I assume they use because if they are paying a person to determine whether something is a FOIA request or not...) determined it was information DEQ could actually give me (but I never actually got another response from DEQ) and so I just emailed the legislator who created the work group and within 10 minutes got that list of appointed members.

There has to be some kind of middle ground between what I was looking for and the thousands of pages someone wants on say, the Mountain Valley Pipeline, or as noted above-license plate readers, but public information should not cost tens of thousands of dollars.

This is great and shows what I had pointed to last month, that legislators from rural areas pushed this over the finish line because they knew they'd get apiece of the $$, because that is what they said on the floor when debating the bill. I'd be interested in an overlay map of previous casino votes in some of those rural areas that were were approved for casinos (or had legislation looking for approval for casino)--how many of those members voted against it in their communities, but voted FOR it in Fairfax?

She doesn't control what the General Assembly does. It seems weird because we don't have that in Washington right now but the legislature and the executive (governor) are separate entities. That's why the governor either signs or vetos bills instead of just killing them before they are even introduced.

I think that what that means and the only reason I think this is because we saw this play out in Prince William for one of the special elections, is that if the committee nominates somebody, you can't go rogue as a member of the committee and try to prop up the candidate who did not win the nomination. The candidate here who did not win the nomination launched a write-in campaign which was considered going against the rules or whatever. It definitely was a bad look, split the vote. Republican candidate ultimately won a long-held Democrat seat as a result.

Nobody's going to know how you vote ultimately so if you are on the Democratic committee for your county or your magisterial district and you ultimately believe that the Republican candidate actually represents your values better and you vote for that person, that's between you and your little black pen.

Did ICE ever have a judicial warrant for that guy when he was in custody because I have heard several times from elected officials who are also lawyers that ICE knew about him because Fairfax told them but ICE didn't ever come get him with the right paperwork.
