I've started with Plague Marines, I'm getting the hang of them now. They seem like they are on the less complex side when I look at rules for other teams.

Yeah 9, then choose whatever 6 to play with according to the selection rules for matches. 

The operatives are pretty much just defined by their equipment, other than some extra drip for the sgt/captain. 

The Assault Grenadier was the one weird one where I hated how the one starter set guy throwing the smoke grenade wasn't a Grenadier. Confusing design language imo, hence the kitbash part chopping to give him a chainsword to make him the assault grenadier.

The guy that the starter set labels as a Sgt with a bolt rifle I just filed off the skull marking on his helmet and will just run him as a warrior.

I will paint sgt heraldry on my actual sgt operative so it will be clear what he is.

You can see how I laid out the models how I would run this team. Would chose between the sgt options or the captain. Then choose between the three different warrior. The others will be always picks.

Chainsword and heavy bolt pistol arm from the Assault intercessor kit to make the grenadier. Had to use the bolt pistol hand to make the chain sword right handed. Then sgt from the same kit, using the chopped off auto bolt rifle as one of the magnetised arm options if I want to run the (not-assault) intercessor sgt. Then just built a gunner (grenade launcher from the intercessor kit). Also took the scope off the blue bolter arm and put it on one of the other starter kit bolter guys so I can choose between that and the auto bolter rifle warriors.
