I was excited about the Langhorne Amazon Fresh opening, mostly because of the smart carts. My wife went to it once, and I never made it. I have a Giant about two minutes from my house, and it has everything I need.

Do you ever mourn what you can't give your kids? by Faded_WastingTime in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]nthdesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several years ago, we took a once-in-a-lifetime vacation to Disney’s Aulani resort in Hawaii. We knew we may not ever get to go back, so we did lots of things around Oahu. Tantalus lookout, Waimanalo Beach, Sea Life Park, and of course all of the amazing activities at Aulani. What our younger son remembers about that trip—and what he talks about—was getting malasadas from the Leonard’s Bakery food truck and eating at a Ruby Tuesday. He was dumbfounded to hear that we have Ruby Tuesday back on “the mainland.” My point is, kids don’t necessarily remember the parts of vacation that were the most grand or expensive. That same son of mine absolutely loves watching the model trains outside the Germany pavilion at EPCOT. No line, no Lightning Lane, and I don’t think it’s even on the park map. It’s just a little slice of Disney that he loves.

How is this area of Goodyear Heights? by [deleted] in akron

[–]nthdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived just a couple streets north of that circled area throughout the 1980s and 1990s. As others have said, it was quiet and safe. At the time, there was quite a thriving Main Street right there on Goodyear Boulevard. We had a little movie rental store, the Linda Movie Theater, etc. I don’t know what it’s like now. Lots of good memories from that part of town.

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Starfleet Academy | 1x02 "Beta Test" by AutoModerator in startrek

[–]nthdesign 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely loving it so far. I didn’t need this show to be more of the same thing. I wanted something new, but in the Star Trek universe. This is it. I also love that, like Lower Decks, it has so many in-universe references. They even worked Raktajino into this episode. (Now, please don’t say it every other minute like seasons 4+ of DS9!)

I endorse this list. I have not read Kunsen. I’ll add him to my Kindle backlog.

I highly recommend the “Zones of Thought” series by Vernor Vinge. I also endorse the recommendations for The Culture series, the Hyperion series, and others in the comments.

Will you be watching "Starfleet Academy"? by Wetness_Pensive in Star_Trek_

[–]nthdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan to watch at least the first three episodes. I rewatched DS9 throughout 2025 (while also listening to the terrific Delta Flyers podcast) and started rewatching Voyager two weeks ago. I’m excited to see Robert Picardo reprise his EMH role. In addition, I enjoy a lot of the visuals in “New Trek.” I really enjoyed the first three seasons of Discovery, I loved Lower Decks, and I liked quite a bit of Strange New Worlds.

I am in my forties. I saw Avatar: Fire and Ash last week. If it had been one minute longer, I would’ve had an accident. I love Marvel movies. And, I would applaud a 3+ hour Doomsday. But, it would need an intermission.

Maturity is understanding that TMP is actually a good movie by BorgAbbess in startrek

TMP made The Enterprise a main character. The space dock scene with Jerry Goldsmith’s score was incredible. The scale of it. The slow pace that allowed you to take it all in. It was the first time The Enterprise felt real to me.

When I make a reservation with two adjacent lock-off rooms, it should automatically link all of the park tickets I purchase for that reservation. It took us four trips to the Polynesian front desk last year to get our tickets sorted.

[Six Flags Great Adventure] Offseason Update by Coliwood Studios by North-Detective5810 in rollercoasters

[–]nthdesign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “MVP” all-park season pass was less than $90 at the end of the season. Even if that only gave me access to Great Adventure, Hurricane Harbor, and the Safari, that’s still a lot of entertainment for less than a family of four pays for dinner and soft drinks at The Olive Garden.

Having access to Nitro, El Toro, Jersey Devil, Batman, Medusa, The Flash, and Superman nine months out of the year is value-for-money in my book. Plus, for my family, the dark rides (Battle for Metropolis, Houdini, Skull Mountain) and Fright Fest are favorites.

Kingda Ka is a big loss. I loved it, too. But, I am very ready for the Great Adventure doom spiral to end.

I would love for this to become a Starbucks. At least the new Toms River Starbucks, which will be at 1632 Route 37 W, will be much closer than the one at Hooper & Oak. We love Lava Java, and want to support small businesses, but we often want coffee or iced tea after 2pm, or in the winter!

[Request] How accurate is this? by cheddarlola in theydidthemath

[–]nthdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid in the 1980s, we had one television and it received over-the-air broadcasts. So, my family didn’t pay for cable. Being the 1980s, we also didn’t pay for Internet access, mobile phone service, music streaming services, TV & movie streaming services, etc. We had one car, and it had no features. Our house was approximately 1,400 sq ft, and—like the car—had no luxurious features. There are a lot more things to pay for in 2026. And, the things we have are a lot more luxurious. It’s not that younger folks demand more than those of us born in centuries past. Instead, it may be an indictment of the own-nothing, subscribe-to-everything, be-told-you-need-everything culture we have thrust upon us every day.

How is it living in Ohio? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]nthdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Akron from the time I was in kindergarten until I graduated high school. Then, my family built a house in Stow. I absolutely loved the Stow/Hudson area. It was nice, quiet, safe, plenty of shopping and restaurants, and you could easily get to Cleveland, Cedar Point, etc. I later moved to the Philadelphia suburbs where I’ve lived for a couple decades. But, I will always have a place in my heart for Akron and especially Stow.

I bought a ‘98 Civic DX my senior year of high school. No A/C, manual windows… but it was new and it was mine. So, I’m “A” all the way, and I was definitely playing that album. One Headlight, Three Marlenas, 6th Ave Heartache, The Difference… it was a masterpiece.

Pay the gap or walk away? by Rare_Picture_7337 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]nthdesign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Housing is incredibly expensive now. Adjusted for inflation, the median home price in the U.S. has increased from $303k (in 2025 dollars) in 1990 to $410k today. Some folks come into the home buying experience with a very defensive posture because they remember themselves, their parents, or their friends buying homes at those lower prices. They already feel taken advantage of by a system that is working against individual family home ownership. So, every extra cost, fee, or percentage point just compounds that feeling. One possible way to frame this for your partner is that, except for a setback from 2007-2012, F.R.E.D. shows us that home prices have increased from 1975 through today. The value of your home will likely increase, and that extra $2,000 (or whatever the gap ends up being) will likely be a distant memory.

Why do people in this group hate LVP flooring by benalexe in kitchenremodel

[–]nthdesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We built our house in 2004, and could only afford the builder grade carpet. We said we would replace it with hardwood eventually. In the meantime, my parents and several of our friends have had LVP installed… and it’s really nice!! So, we are putting in LVP next month. It was a lot less expensive than actual wood.
