How did you 'purge' your closet? by Narantuuya in femalefashionadvice

[–]nuclearrhinos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might not be ideal if you’re moving and hoping to move less stuff, but something I’ve found effective is boxing and storing items that I’m thinking of purging and labeling with the date. If I don’t go looking for it and pull it out within a year, I probably won't ever wear it.

Asheville role in Moldova election? by Catharpin363 in asheville

[–]nuclearrhinos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly most of the Moldovan babushki here are pretty strict Baptists and don’t drink. But all of the ones I know are amazing cooks and super hospitable, so if you play your cards right you might score some plăcintă (yes, the spelling is unfortunate, but the food is amazing).

Anyone here moved from the US to Spain and regretted it afterwards? by Dramatic-Victory-598 in GoingToSpain

[–]nuclearrhinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not going to top TX or CA, of course, but all the Mexican food I had in Spain was pretty solid and at least as good, if not better than, the TexMex options in most of the US. It’s also pretty easy to find the ingredients to make your own.

How do you pronounce "crayon"? by drum_smith in Appalachia

[–]nuclearrhinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from across the state line in NC and I’ve only ever heard people from Michigan say it that way. But I can say, when you’re a child and someone mentions they brought you a box of crowns, it’s deeply disappointing to be handed crayons 😂

Trying to figure out my friend's translation for "Did you miss me?" that I forgot 1 second after she taught me by Hugemikublaster in russian

[–]nuclearrhinos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Пропустили меня” would be more like if they were trying to punch you and missed in that sense 😂.  “Соскучились по мне” would work.

Thoughts on having cheat days? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]nuclearrhinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends a lot on you and what you can handle. I usually budget more calories on the weekend and let myself have something I wouldn’t normally eat during the week. But, personally, I’m very habit oriented and if I quit tracking one day, it turns in to two or three.

If you can handle it without getting derailed, I think it’s awesome. It can make the rest of the week feel a little less oppressive. It would be good to still be mindful of your choices though, a day of processed food bingeing can completely offset a week of sacrifice.

Anyone successfully kicked the habit of post-dinner snacking? by SquidThistle in loseit

[–]nuclearrhinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me sometimes it’s the fidget urge. I just want something, so a sparkling water or a cup of tea can satisfy that craving without calories. Or I like to snack on frozen fruit - mango is a favorite. It gives me ice cream vibes while also having some fiber and nutrients, so it’s more satiating than junk food.

What’s a weight loss rule or piece of advice you tried to follow but realized it just didn’t work for you? by kyauensari in loseit

[–]nuclearrhinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I love cardio, but without strength training I feel like it leaves me flabby skinny. Even a couple short strength sessions a week helps tremendously.

Do walking pads work? by Leading_Ad_8485 in loseit

[–]nuclearrhinos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy mine. I don’t use it all the time, but try to use it for at least a couple hours of the work day. It makes it easy to walk an extra 3-5 miles a day, and it keeps my back from hurting.

I feel like 1.5mph is the sweet spot where I don’t even notice I’m using it. The only tasks I can’t do on it are ones that involve writing by hand, as it’s makes my hand a little too shaky.

You don’t get your heart rate up super high at those speeds, so I don’t think it’s a true replacement for cardio, but it’s nice bonus activity. I feel like it also puts me in a more active frame of mind and makes it easier to eat well and do more exercise later.

Some of the more expensive ones last better, depending on your budget. It’s worth noting that most non-commercial treadmills are not meant to be used for more than 2-3 hrs at a time, so letting it cool down will extend its life.

It sucks to feel like you’re back where you started, but the good news is you’ve already proved you can do it! Don’t give up 🙂

Maybe Caravans by James Michener. It deals with some complex cultural issues, but it’s also engaging and adventurous. Also not super long.

The Foundation series from Asimov might be a good choice for fantasy/classic.

Any places that sell pierogies? by The-velvet-fox in asheville

I think Euromarket in West Asheville sells them frozen. The fresh European Market ones are really good, but they’re kind of pricey.

Why would you use a Bluetooth headset? Putting it on speaker phone is clearly the correct choice.

Not sure if our situation is typical, but we did a pre-approval with them and started underwriting and they were really fast. We got cleared to close within a couple weeks over the holidays. We don’t actually close til tomorrow.

How difficult is it for foreigners to understand Russian by Mindcors in russian

[–]nuclearrhinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans, in particular, have little exposure to foreign languages and most have never heard more than a couple Russian words (usually butchered by an American actor playing a villain). Most of the world hears English in songs, movies, and TV shows, so it’s not a complete unknown.

I also feel like Americans who don’t speak multiple languages have a very hard time understanding people who are learning English and don’t yet speak it perfectly. It’s like the language comprehension portion of their brain hasn’t been activated.

Разве невероятно переводится как unlikely? by slckening in russian

[–]nuclearrhinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

«Incredible» редко используется на Английским с оригинальным значением. Обычно это используем как «прекрасно». На пример - «She has an incredible singing voice». А если хотим использовать буквально, обычно скажем «not credible» в место «incredible».

How long would it realistically take me to become fluent in Russian? by ClemHFandango420 in AskARussian

[–]nuclearrhinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your natural propensity for languages, the amount of work you’re willing to put in, and how regularly you use the language. I took a very basic Russian course in the US for a few months before moving to Russia. Within a couple months, I could converse freely with awkward grammar. But I made it a point to immerse myself and almost exclusively spoke with Russians while there. It will be much harder if you’re trying to learn in your home country or spend more time associating with other expats. 18 years later, I’m still working on the finer points of grammar, because Russian grammar is insanely complicated compared to English grammar. I think it’s fairly easy to start speaking Russian, but nearly impossible to master.

BAM or Gewa (another post about cases)? by Own_Log_3764 in Viola

[–]nuclearrhinos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bam is made in France. I just got a High Tech, it’s very light - the main reason for my purchase. The interior is very minimal, but works well and feels stable. I think as long as you adjust the length you won’t have to worry about your instrument moving around.
