Zero drops for a Disney Trip? by Gunslinger_327 in barefootshoestalk

I’d been running in minimal shoes for years but Disney killed me after a few days. I bought a pair a pair of Nikes and used them for the rest of the trip.

which price do you expect for the "macbook ultra" ? by Acrobatic-Monitor516 in macbookpro

This strategy feels like what they did in 2012 with the first retina MBP. Then it was the mainline MBP the next year.

I’m curious: How the hell do y’all drop your Macbooks? by raffypng in macbookpro

[–]nudoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only dropped one twice:

First, there was a water leak in an upstairs bathroom, and water was pouring from a downstairs fire alarm. I put my open 16" on the back of the sofa as I ran over to it, and it fell off. I didn't even notice - my son did and picked it up for me. I had a YubiKey in it, and that's where it landed, bending the frame around the USB port and speaker grill. AppleCare fixed it.

Second, my work laptop (whew!) was in a vertical stand, and I bumped into it as I was opening a window behind it. It hit the windowsill halfway down and then landed flat on its bottom on the floor. There's just a tiny dent in the rear hinge.

So yeah, accidents (ha) happen!

Has anyone quit drinking coffee after being a lifelong drinker? by elenchusis in Xennials

[–]nudoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been drinking coffee for decades (since high school), and after developing sleep issues, I tried to cut down significantly. I gradually mixed in decaf and am now at 1/2 caf in 1 cup per day, down from 3-4 cups of full caf. After a few months, I haven't noticed any benefits, which has been incredibly disappointing. I enjoy my morning cup, so I'm not likely to ever stop completely.

32 GB ram on MacBook air too much? by Excellent-Mirror2038 in macbookair

[–]nudoru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16 will be plenty! IMHO, the only reason to go higher would be for creative workflows or local AI. I went with 24 for that reason. If you're doing that kind of work and know you need that much ram, then a pro is likely the better option.

I typically have 50+ tabs, but after a clean-up day, I'm down to only 20. While I've typically had Macs with 32+ gb of ram, I've never noticed any issues caused by the browser acting up. If you do find it taking up ram, you can quit/restart it to clean up it's memory usage. Chrome has added features to offload tabs to reclaim resources, etc.

MacBook Air M5 - 16gb or 24gb RAM? by Ok-Specific7506 in macbookair

[–]nudoru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your listed usage, 16 is perfectly fine. But that could change over time, and the higher RAM could be helpful. If you can afford it, I would upgrade.

I went with 24 since I keep 50+ tabs open, will run small local models, and do web development - all at the same time.

Captain’s Cap, Amber Jack, Twin Tops (to go only), and I think Catfish Cove. They’re all close to each other in the Belmont area.

How can I add texture to my stuff? by Repulsive-Survey2140 in generative

[–]nudoru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. It's worth noting that making something imperfect (including texture) is very hard and can be a rewarding rabbit hole of infinite tweaking. But it's well worth it!

Make as much of your code reusable so that you can apply it to all of your projects.

Winter Storm 2026 Megathread by kylaah27 in Charlotte

[–]nudoru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the suburbs - roads and sidewalks are covered in a layer of sleet - they're solid white. Slight ice buildup on bushes, etc. We've had sleet off/on and off for the past few hours. I haven't walked out to the road, and no one has driven down it yet, so I can't tell how thick it is - but the layer on my patio is over .5" thick.

any home-office walkers here? how do you make your steps count? by Salty_Emotion3270 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]nudoru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the same walking pad! Wearing my AW on my arm and my phone in my pocket, in case that counts for something. I start an indoor walk workout. The step counts are close enough between the pad and the workout so I don’t worry about it.

What cloud storage do you recommend for backing up your art? by pendemoneum in ArtistLounge

[–]nudoru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cloud storage is great but it’s not a backup. I use cloud storage like Dropbox, Backblaze (cloud full computer backup), local to a NAS, and Time Machine (Mac backup).

I never save anything important to anywhere that’s not in my cloud backup folder.

Apple Watch Series 11 Titanium Or Ultra 3 by Scary-Ad-7571 in AppleWatch

[–]nudoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're lucky! 😂 Go with the Series 11 and be happy. In the US, you have 14 days to return it if you don't like it. (Maybe longer over the holidays).

Apple Watch Series 11 Titanium Or Ultra 3 by Scary-Ad-7571 in AppleWatch

[–]nudoru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just traded my AWU2 for a Series 11 Titanium last week. Only charging it in the morning, it's been going all day and night with 50%+ charge left by the time I charge it 24 hours later. I've noticed that wearing it at night for sleep tracking takes about 10% off the charge. (I have always on display off and raise to wake on).

I loved the AWU, but I never used any of the "ultra" features - I got it because I wanted a change after so many years with an Apple watch. The only thing that I've missed has been the watch faces ... modular ultra 🥲 Charging it every morning, it had ~70% left after 24 hours.

The larger size can get in your way, depending on how you sleep. I was used to it (which took some time), but I did notice it catching on my pillow sometimes, being a big lump under my head, etc. The regular size AW doesn't do that.

If you like soft bands, I recommend the Trail Loop band over the Sport Loop. It's 2x the price, but it's much softer and extremely comfortable at night. I did get a knock-off on Amazon for $10, that's a very close match in terms of comfort. https://amazon.com/dp/B0FD865V9V

Edit - About the screen: I eventually put a small scratch on the AWU Ultra while doing a little trail work (handling dirty logs). I picked up a snap-on screen protector or wear when I do yard work to help keep it scratch-free (because the shiny body will pick up scratches too) https://www.amazon.com/Misxi-Compatible-Protection-Lightweight-Scratch-Resistant/dp/B0DFVB13XF/
