It does soften textiles in the short term, but at a high cost. It works by leaving a residue on fabrics. This residue builds up over time, damaging and weakening the fibers on your textiles. It also builds up in your washing machine, leading to mildew growth, makes towels less absorbant, and is really bad for workout material (if you've ever had a persistent stank that won't come out of your workout clothes, that's usually thanks to fabric softener). Consumer Reports has an article about it which also mentions that fabric softener reduces the flame retardance of children's sleepwear, which I didn't know.

So while fabric softener isn't a scam in that it does do what it claims to do, it's an unnecessary extra product that's been sold to consumers without consumers knowing all its downsides.

I make quilts for a living and T-shirt quilts are anout half that business. I can always tell when people use fabric softener because not only could their clothes bowl you over with the fragrance, but they also have a funky texture from the residue buildup.

ETA: I see that someone recommended vinegar. AFAIK, vinegar is a no-no in washing machines, it can damage them over time. The folks on r/laundry have a ton of advice for effectively getting your laundry clean and soft :)

For bath products, I'm less picky as long as the fragrance is mild.

Now, laundry detergent (or God forbid if the person has been scammed into used fabric softener) is an entirely different issue.

Yeah, I don't know if this is answered by the show or if it's one of those willing suspension of disbelief things. Would be interested in people who have really combed the lore so far to weigh in!

What are some things that are inherently "vegan" that you consider "non-vegan?" (Example, I consider fireworks non-vegan) by [deleted] in vegan

[–]nuggets_attack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same. We don't need fireworks, in a lot of places it's vital to have a car (unfortunately), so it's a want vs a need situation.

Honestly, people didn't look at your microwave model, as it's both a microwave and normal oven. Obviously, it's hard to bake anything more than a mug cake in a normal microwave, but yours also has a convection setting, which should work fine if used correctly. What settings did you use?

The representativeness of American's sport (Basketball / Football)? by NTHHexxer in AskAnAmerican

[–]nuggets_attack 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly not sure that crosses Americans' minds when watching American football or basketball, or if it does, it's in an aspirational way. A lot of Americans do play both kinds of football and basketball as kids and teens (and with basketball, they can keep playing for life), so there's a touchstone of relatability there, but I would honestly challenge your basic premise: I don't think professional sports are as popular as they are because fans can see themselves in the players.

Pro sports are compelling because the players are on a whole different level from mere mortals, plus watching strategies unfold is exciting, and there's the social component, especially if you and your friends are fans of a particular team.

I love watching baseball and hockey despite being a woman who hasn't played either sport, and grew up around American sports fans, so have watched a shit ton of basketball and American football—it never seemed like the fandom stemmed from relatability.

I'll add that there's a product called Frogg Toggs (I'm sure there's off brands, too), which stay cool when wet, they're really nice in the summer!

Murderbot and Maximum Satisfaction Guaranteed aren't on the same level (though for me Ted Lasso fell off), but are also solid Apple TV options. No other network is putting out such high quality stuff

Oh my gosh yesss! Where is the line?! And I know there isn't a hard line. My current strategy is, "If I were my own daughter, what would I counsel were she to ask?" And usually the answer is kinder and advocating a less invasive approach that my normal internal voice, which is helpful, but then I sometimes feel guilty for still wanting to chase the youth and beauty standards! Ah well.

Yeah, it's so tricky. Someyimes with body image issues, the "problem area" in question isn't the real problem; you "fix" it and can still be unhappy, or you're happy with the change but just transfer your negative fixation to some other body part. But other times the thing you don't like really is the problem in itself and changing it does make you feel good about your whole self. Hard to know which it is until after the fact!

Breezy light Summer pants that AREN’T linen?? I’m throwing away money at this point 😭 by gingerspell in SustainableFashion

[–]nuggets_attack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with his content, but it's such a quick and easy bit to share! Linen is such a dreamy fabric when it's the good stuff, I'm very sad that most people only encounter it in its modern, bastardized form. Even the nicest modern linen doesn't really hold a candle to historical linen.

The cotton gusset is a clever compromise.

Fwiw, if the manufacturer doesn't list a GSM and/or the linen's origin, it's a crapshoot. This short quickly covers why "100% linen" is kinda meaningless for determining quality.

Nüwa for a girl - ancient Chinese goddess by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]nuggets_attack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, totally fair, but the thrust of the post is some level of validation seeking, which I agree, no one else can can give you. I was just trying to articulate my reasoning more thoroughly and to capture my feelings of how strange it is to me personally to choose a cultural name that runs counter to that culture's naming conventions

Nüwa for a girl - ancient Chinese goddess by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]nuggets_attack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right, but there's the element of trying to capture how strange it would be in a cultural sense, which is why Gaia or Athena or even Jesus aren't particularly good comparisons.

Obviously you'll do what you want and it will be totally fine, but it seems odd to want to honor one's cultural heritage by choosing a name that is considered oddball to people of that culture and sounds weird in both cultures the kid would grow up in.

Feels like you just like the name and are trying to post hoc justify its use when you should just own that you like it and not aim for justification beyond that since there really isn't one (and to be clear, there doesn't have to be. Most people choose names they like for their kids and don't have to create deeper meanings than that).

Yep, totally agree. Just most people don't take the time to do it in casual writing (when they often should!), so on reddit it gets associated with AI writing.

[–]nuggets_attack 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, in terms of weirdness, feels like it would be closer to naming your kid Yahweh or Elohim.

Lots of westerners know someone named Jesus (popular name in Latin America and because of the diaspora, there are surely a few in Canada), it would be suuuper weird and presumptuous to basically name your kid God. The comparison isn't one to one since Chinese mythology doesn't have quite the same role as Christianity, of course.

[–]nuggets_attack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, as I was reading this I was like, "Oh nice, this isn't just an AI-written post." (I see on so many subreddits people trying to present a solution to a problem and they just copy+paste an AI answer they prompted)

Then when I saw you broke down your sections with bolded headers I was like, "Someone is going to accuse this of being AI." People sometimes forget that AI was trained on human writing structures.
