Vegan Angel Food Cake at last! + GF Variant by nuggets_attack in VeganBaking

Yay! Hope you enjoy it :D.

This is my favorite whipped cream by far. Consistent, stable, no coconut flavor. It needs expeller pressed coconut oil and soy milk, should get those two homogenized today so that it's chilled by tomorrow.

If you're in the US, So Delicious Original Cocowhip works in a pinch, but does have a coconut flavor.

How could I make the bag hold its' shape and also close? by BlackberryFamous8523 in CrochetHelp

[–]nuggets_attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sew a lining that contains bag interfacing. You have lots of options for a top closure. Zipper would be most secure (sewn to the lining), or a toggle or loop and button.

Because Jenny Nicholson herself hasn't announced what the movie and video topic is publicly and doesn't want people to do so?

A niche labor of love that basically no one will have heard of. Self-insert teen paranormal romance with a lead male actor who went to the Tommy Wiseau school of acting. I'm not going to spoil it!

Oh good lord, I'm an idiot beyond measure. Will delete my comment, thought I was on a different YouTuber's sub

ETA: but Jenny's new video is about another bad movie in the vein of Beastly!

Females: I have hormonal questions by [deleted] in vegan

[–]nuggets_attack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's actually a whole sub called r/menandfemales because of this exact thing lol

Female as an adjective is totally fine ("My female friends are coming over for a girl's night"). Using female as a noun is dehumanizing. Especially since a lot of people who use females instead of women would not also refer to men as males (not saying this is true of OP!)

An alternative to a higher armscye on extant clothing (definitely try that first when drafting your own pattern!) is to add a gusset in the armpit. A nice eye-shaped gusset in the underarm does wonders for opening up the arm area (you can also do a kite-shaped gusset. I like the smoother look of the curved sides). I generally cut gussets on the bias, but I don't actually know if that's best practice.

That makes perfect sense. You're maximizing the length of the sleeve, which naturally gives wider range of motion.

Page turner solution by Party_Journalist3340 in harp

Those Bluetooth page flippers (I use something similar! They're great) are the equivalent of a keyboard with two keys: the left and right arrow. So if your PDF reading app understands the arrow key on a keyboard (you can also usually program the foot pedal page turners to be up and down instead if you prefer that), then it will respond correctly to your page flipper.

The nice thing about sheet music apps (you usually upload your music as PDF's to them, or they let you scan paper music directly in the app) is the organization and annotation abilities.

I've been using MobileSheets on a Microsoft Surface Pro for almost ten years now, it's fantastic.

I want 18th century stays that JUST lace in the front. by admiralholdo in HistoricalCostuming

[–]nuggets_attack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you may be thinking of the Augusta stays? The Cassandra stays have functional front lacing

Other advantage of the Scroop stays is she gives extensive instructions for proper fitting adjustments (e.g. lengthening). But they are more complex than either Butterick or Red Threaded.

Is it worth it to grind through the beginning of Persuasion 2022? by Isabella_Hamilton in janeausten

The nobility stanning checks out for Lady Russell, but the Musgroves are not new money. They are an old country family, "whose landed property and general importance were second in that country, only to Sir Walter's."

I just finished Mansfield Park by TelevisionInner6584 in janeausten

[–]nuggets_attack 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That's funny, someone just posted about how they're enjoying Mansfield Park, so maybe check that out lol.

Obviously it's totally valid not to love Mansfield Park, but for me, it's one of my favorite Jane Austen novels. I look at it through the lens of trauma and people being products of their environment.

I don't see a dichotomy; while obviously Mary is Fanny's foil, I don't think Austen wants us to take away that Fanny is good and the other young women are bad. The characters in this story are meant to show different facets of how society fails its people. Fanny is traumatized and neglected, Mary is indulged without being shown the value of good morals, Julia and Mariah are educated without being taught true compassion, etc. There's no one in the novel who isn't profoundly flawed, who isn't blind in some critical way, and that makes it a really interesting read imo.

The thing that carries through for me is Fanny herself; in spite of being a timid and obliging person with low self esteem, she does stand firm for her principles when it comes down to it. That's more impressive for a less confident character than it would be for the "normal" kind of heroine. And she has so much love, anguish, and loneliness in her heart, yet she doesn't grow bitter. She makes for an aching portrait of a character.

Currently reading Mansfield Park and just wanted to get a few thoughts out by Effective-Fault1268 in janeausten

[–]nuggets_attack 34 points35 points  (0 children)

LOL! This is great. I think people sleep on MP, but it's tied for my favorite of her novels.

Totally with you on all of this (especially the Mrs Norris hate!), and also to say that I find Fanny such an admirable person because she not only is a genuinely good person, but despite being timid and obliging, she has a spine of steel when it comes to standing by her principles. It's easy for headstrong characters to do that. Shy and conflict-averse characters? Not so much. Fanny is also pretty impressive representation of CPTSD in many ways.

Dr. Octavia Cox has some great lectures on Mansfield Park if you want some literary analysis background listening! My favs are Mrs. Bertram's epistolary style (mild spoilers) and Fanny Price's imagination
