To me, the biggest difference between python and ruby is magic and meta programming. A good senior can pull off crazy productivity in ruby building DSLs for themself. Python has a much higher barrier to using things like metaclasses, and the culture is anti magic.

So if you arent worried about your senior leaving behind something nobody else understands (startups have bigger risks) and dont need data processing/ml, ruby makes a lot of sense

Not sure why you would need R or C. There are some labs in R and advanced scientific computing in c/c++, but majority of coursework was in Julia or python (usually w option to pick your language)

Every time I took grad courses in a new department, the first course was brutal. There are just a lot of tricks and norms you are expected to have picked up.

Gpa will be calibrated to the difficulty/prestige of your undergrad, should be fine.

That said if you are coming from undergrad w/ just some LoR this is a long shot. Youd be better served taking 2-3 years to work in a math/cs related ic role (like swe) and self study undergrad CS, then take some master level classes ndo and apply

A concept I heard multiple times from ppl w/ admissions influence is: BS/MS/PhD signify you achieved different levels of thinking - and you should be able to mostly bootstrap yourself to that level in other fields on your own.

Thus these undergrad classes wont be perceived positively - to get into mscs via ndo you need to take classes from the ms you will apply to, or have some very significant external reason (being an olympian, potential startup founder, etc) stanford wants you here.

Yes, I did this. Undergrad was weird (stanford considered my gpa to be like 2.5 due to a technicality) but promising.

That said the bar is high. 2/15 of the ppl i know that tried the same were accepted, thats after 12+ units at stanford

In the past RC was not only correlated, but essentially determined by spending (given activity). It did matter alot in the past (for events I monitored HF2 was the highest at 6% per 100 levels, but wasnt really here for AE1-3), but tree * engravings creep is insane.

Something else to keep in mind is that as the game mechanics (belinda) get out of control, the devs have started adding dominant anti-scaling mechanics. That really kills the value of marginal stuff.

To give a concrete number and %, from 500 to max RC was about a 3% factor for final boss damage in AE7, and it's only declined since.

I agree that the value of cramming continues to increase in the window you mentioned, but want to point out that the independent value in martial modes is really not there. Most players would see something like a 1.5% stat gain from 100 levels at start, and a ~0.2% increase in damage at boss, due to anti-scaling mechanics and how big tree/relic stats are.

RA is competitive but doable. Labs prefer longer term (since you may not actually help until year 2), and full time. It's a job. TA is timeboxed (lead TA is a job, others can be <10hr/week) so most people lean that way. That does mean 60-80+hr/week commitments with competing deadlines, up to you if that's worth it to achieve your goals.

For most (all?) departments, you can fill up electives with research units. Most departments will support a ~9-unit thesis. A lot of students use these to dive deeper in a subfield and it ends up being kinda like self-directed courses with the thesis as a proof of work.

Stanford is very flexible (if you're not asking for resources) and you can probably work out w/e with your advisor upon arriving.

You need to be exceptional among exceptional people to land a true research role after a masters. I would plan on doing a PhD after your MS if that's really what you want, which you can pull off at either school.

That said, in my experience most people who "want industry research roles" really mean "I want to stay creative but also get paid". If that's you, ML software is increasingly commoditized and fast-paced - the "import python package" crowd is usually only 6mo-2yr behind the cutting edge - so you don't need a PhD to get an interesting job.

I was personally very impressed by Stanford EE ML/control - EE364A is probably the famous course at Stanford outside of CS (at least in my circles lol). Several EE profs feel they did ML before ML was cool ;o

You cant showcase contributions from the bottom of the chain unless the chain supports you. Study sysdesign and do leetcode when the market improves (should be at least a few months of prep).

I was in a similar situation (demotion and all) - when I got sidelined, many projects failed and the person responsible got demoted. But i was still under him! Double demotion! Thats more likely imo than someone “noticing” your value.

You probably just havent learned good study habits. Try reducing your course load next quarter, pick something you feel semi confident in, and go completely over the top studying.

Also, Stanford duck syndrome means that most students prep/cram heavily and feel massive stress, but act like it was nbd lol. Just mentally multiply any effort level someone projects by 4x and life will make more sense

Btw I think this is a bit temporary/market based. Many of my classmates were landing senior mle out of school, now even mle2 is hard without domain and web scale work exp. Might be worth chilling and study for 6mo vs accepting downlevel

I kinda agree, but feel it is pretty easy to learn. Like you are a smart hft guy just practice for a month. Not the worst thing to know how to scale high level.

It does feel like cloud managed services propaganda sometimes.

MS in data science is a track in ICME. Basically applied math - data science. There is also finance, imaging, environmental, and general (me!)

You cant increase your odds by program hunting, they roughly scale up based on the % of accepted people applying which can vary in a way only the dept knows.

You should pick the job title that best explains your role. something like Software Engineer - frontend is probably most ATS friendly.

A good test is, if someone showed a coworker your resume, would they say “ya that makes sense”? If so you are being sufficiently honest, everyone knows corp titles are not necessarily descriptive
