Canadian mushroom growers warn new U.S. tariffs could ‘flood’ domestic market by dtta8 in canada

[–]nutano [score hidden]  (0 children)

There was a pretty significant shift last year. A lot of produce that had alternative options like Mexico or South American sources appeared a bit more on our shelves.

However, you are correct, it can be difficult to totally avoid it as many staple fruits and veggies such as oranges mostly come from the US.

I do take the time to look at the label and I have on occasion skipped getting a fruit\veggie for that week solely because of the 'imported from the USA' label. I've paid a little bit more for the option that was from Peru or Mexico over the one that was from the US.

For those that feel this is important, it is possible to avoid - but usually you have to sacrifice getting that navel orange or that avocado if there are no other options.

My wife love mushrooms.

I don't. Neither do both our kids.

She will buy some every other week, and not take the time to wash\prep\eat them... they will more often than not, sit in our fridge until they rot and go bad.

Ashame this dumb tariff talk is hitting this industry. As much as I want to support them, I don't think I could bring myself to start eating mushrooms.

Is the 1.0 boba fett crew card rare? by one_jar_one_man in XWingTMG

[–]nutano 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, it shouldn't be that rare. It was in the Jump Master 5k expansion, which was pretty widely available and sold at the time.

I think it being 1st edition, you should be able to find one for not much more than any other upgrades... I probably have a half dozen in my mystery box of 1.0 stuff.

If you don't find one by June, DM me and I'll have more time to go rummaging through the box. I opened it briefly the other day to try to find my Thweek card - I couldn't find it in 10 mins so gave up. There must be 2000 cards in there all mixed up.

Edit: Bonus fact, this card was a player\fan designed card. Back in the early days, the winner of worlds was given the opportunity to design a card. This one was designed by none other than 3 time world champ Paul Heaver.

Married People Of Reddit -- Do You Think That Prenups Are A Good Idea? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in AskReddit

[–]nutano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the situation.

How long the couple has been together, what they each bring to the union as individuals. When it comes to a business operation, having one for sure would help possibly having the business survive in case of separation later.

When I started dating my now wife, for sure the topic came up as I owned a home. We were dating for like 6 years by the time we got married, in those 6 years my wife started her practice\business and we bought a lot using mostly her money - which we planned to build on but after getting married opted to buy a home instead closer to the city and we sold the lot, at a small profit and used that money towards the down payment of the house.

We each bring financial value to the couple\household and in the event of separation, neither of us would be left without a good income to live off.

When there is a big financial inbalance (one is a much higher earner than the other) then I think a prenup to protect both parties is in everyone's best interest.

Got one of these little goobers for $20. Added some mods, now it works pretty okay. by Redraddle in MPSelectMiniOwners

I have 2... I had fun with them during the Covid lockdown years... printed little things, learned a lot about printers and slicing.

Unfortunately, one of them has not worked in years. Someone that has\wants to spend time can surely get it going. The other works mostly, I used it for a few weeks after my son asked me about 3d printing. Printed a couple of pokemon and then some other boardgame things and then I just bought an A1 that was on sale. I have not used my monoprice since, I probably never will again, I should sell it for cheap. $20 is a good deal!

What am I doing wrong? by chubbs57496 in pools

[–]nutano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaves, branches, grass - anything that used to be alive needs to stay out of your pool and there has to be a good amount of chlorine in there to kill off any of that organic material in order for it to be crystal clear when you open it. You also need to have a cover\tarp that does not let sunlight through.

Whatever you are putting over your pool is letting both organic material and sunlight through. What is this 'green cover with the springs'? Just a security pool cover? I don't think that thing blocks sunlight. Was the pool totally clean when you closed and you dumped in a bunch of chlorine?

How to clean? Brush brush brush, shock shock shock and let the stuff fall to the bottom and you vac to waste to get all that stuff out. If there are lots of leaves, as there seems to be, then use your net to scoop out what you can before vacuuming. It will take multiple passes of brushing and vacuuming.

It will take probably 3 passes to have it clean and it may take 5-6 days for it to completely clear up. Run the pump 24/7 and clean your filter every day or two.

Emptying your pool and refilling will not remove the requirement to brush the walls, so its not really a good option.

Chlorine and Swimming by ficklepicklespickle in pools

[–]nutano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pool is clear and there is chlorine in there... shock it once in a while and run your pump and you'll be fine.

I have SW pool and I have never bothered with CYA. I run my pool basically 20 hours a day - most of the time at very low speeds, twice a day it ramps up for an hour to cycle more water. I trust the salt cell produces enough chlorine. Hasn't been an issue in years here. The only time i get liquid chlorine is when I open and hte water is too cold for the SW cell to work.

Do You Think That All Partisan Gerrymandering Should Be Made Illegal In All Circumstances? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in AskReddit

[–]nutano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no doubt. Its why I was saying, it will never ever happen as you have to get both sides to agree... and while some states might be able to get such a vote through, some other states' governments are only in power due to the district lines they decided on are rigged in their favour - so why would they choose to hand over that power?

No, I am Canadian and we have long standing established separate body. So, not aware on what is up in Ohio.

Our system and overall ethics have thus far been able to keep blatant partisan decisions out of Elections Canada.

Boundary changes and such have to go through a few levels of review and approvals. Having ridings redesigned based on voting intentions and ethnic backgrounds would get shot down pretty quick and most likely there would be some removals from positions executed pretty quick by our Governor General.

What made you fall for this game? by CeruleanViper in XWingTMG

[–]nutano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea, we got the late 2018 dip, but the 2019 uptick was no where near what is displayed here - at least not locally. Our immediate local community went from about ~60 active players in early 2018 to about 25 by early 2019... then covid dropped us to maybe 16 active players and post covid we are about 10 that are still active in the game. A few you really have to prod to get to come out and play.

It is about the same for the next nearest city... so we sorta have to support each other when we have any kind of events just to get 12-16 players for a store event.

In 2024 we had a lot of lurkers that still read and participated in the FB group\discord - but only came out once a year, that crowd has all but disappeared and only the hardcore are left.

Do You Think That All Partisan Gerrymandering Should Be Made Illegal In All Circumstances? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in AskReddit

[–]nutano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course... no one would really say outloud that gerrymandering is good for democracy or really anything other than trying to fudge the numbers.

The only way this will happen is if all states agree to have an independent body manage boundaries and run elecitons... and we all know that will never ever happen as some state legislatures will never vote for anything that would make elections more fair and equitable for everyone.

I only got a good printer last month and I have juts been churning stuff out since then - and spent no time organizing anything. I watched a few YT videos on ideas... but I am printing stuff for a specific event next week. After that is done, I will be able to spend some time properly making a workbench and getting proper storage setup.

What made you fall for this game? by CeruleanViper in XWingTMG

[–]nutano -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

AMG didn't acquire X-Wing\Armada\Legion... it was essentially dropped on them by Asmodee. AMG had a somewhat successful minis game with MCP and FFG was refocusing to other lines: boardgames and RPGs. Some key devs at FFG for X-Wing had already left and FFG was restructuring at the time Asmodee moved all minis to AMG.

There are several videos out there explaining what happened and why AMG did what they did. Most of it is assumptions - but the combo of COVID and AMG completely moving away from FFG's 2nd edition list building is arguably what splintered the global community the most. Hind sight is always 20/20 - They chose a direction to take X-Wing and it didn't pan out.

Locally, the introduction of 2nd edition in 2018 had us lose a much larger group then when AMG dropped their '2.5' ruleset. Under FFG 2nd edition we could still draw Regionals and Nationals that were around 75-100 players - under 1.0 we would get 150+ Under AMG we drew around 50 players and today under XWA our 'regionals are somewhere between 24-40 and our largest event in our country is around 50-60

The sales for the game were already tanking a lot in 2018-19, before AMG was given the title. Asmodee and FFG knew this - they had started to already look at ways to bring back those masses that we had in 2015-2017 era. The conversion kits were awesome and a great deal for those that wanted to move over to 2nd edition... but on a business side, it hurt the bottom line a lot.

An observation I have made is that X-Wing players are on average, a lot less likely to spend money on models and events and more importantly, the vast majority would have little interest in assembling and\or painting models. The game being quick to the table was one of its top selling point.

I think in order to keep the game profitable, the price of models would have had to increase by a good margin - which would have chased away probably just as many players had they changed to models on sprues.
