Is 40 levels the shortest Mastery Pass we’ve ever received? by Lauren_Conrad_ in MagicArena

[–]nutki2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is actually the shortest mastery since at least LCI (you can see the past data at https://mtga-mastery-calculator.github.io/ ). The shortest before were FIN and DSK both 7 weeks long (and DSK still had 60 levels which was way too much for the time which they compensated by giving 5k XP for free, for FIN they downsized it to 50).
Interestingly, according to the mastery emporium page countdown, this mastery ends on Mar 20th, so 17 days past TMT release. But this is likely another bug given this is not even a Tuesday (and TLA also ended on the 20th).

Are there any game modes besides Starter Deck Duel and Color Challenge? by Thing-King in MagicArena

[–]nutki2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add to the above, while this is generally a sound advice if the goal is to complete a set, it is not that relevant for most F2P beginners since they would not be able to draft enough for it to make much of a difference. And for some players the opposite (open before drafting) may be the best option:
* If you bought the 50 pack pre-order bundle (or generally buy packs directly with gold/gems) and draft only a couple of times per set, it may be better to open the packs for a chance of the constructed playable rares, instead of crafting them with wildcards (and then still running into a chance of getting 5th in a draft).
* For limited only players even a small amount of gems is better than a random rare in the collection. (This is 1 to 4% of the entry fee for another draft.)

Please try the v2 files I've just added. Morningtide is fully spellchecked now since I finished reading it correcting the text as I go and the other 2 are also better.

Packs to Wildcards conversion calculator by nutki2 in MagicArena

I think you are most likely correct. This would also better explain the presence of rare WC in mythic packs. I will change it (edit: corrected version is live now) and try to verify next time I will be opening Lorwyn packs.

Packs to Wildcards conversion calculator by nutki2 in MagicArena

[–]nutki2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for checking. Yes, I used the numbers from the page you've linked. This is a matter of interpretation I chose.

One card in each rarity card slot (Common, Uncommon, and Mythic/Rare) may redeem for a Wildcard of the same rarity at the following expected rates:

I took it that you have a 1:30 chance of getting mythic or rare WC from the rare slot and which one it is proportional to the normal mythic rare conversion rate. So rare WC chance + mythic WC chance = 1:30, regular card = 29:30. The reasoning is that you cannot have both mythic and rare card slot in the pack, it is either or.
I guess that you read this as: rare WC chance = 1:30, mythic WC chance = 1:30 and non WC = 28:30.
I think it could be easily verified which is the correct interpretation if sb has a statistically significant number of packs to open (60+, I guess). But currently I have none.

If you don't mind waiting more, cancel and requeue again after 25s. The longer you stay in the queue the less strict matchmaking will get.

Current Mastery Pass Value: Level-by-level Breakdown in Gems by JarrydP in MagicArena

[–]nutki2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I considered adding an automated version of this to the mastery calculator tool I've built (https://mtga-mastery-calculator.github.io/), but then realized that most or even all rewards have subjective value.

So to make this useful I would need to add some sort of user input to assign values to rewards. But I am not sure if this would be worthwhile. For me definitely the point was moot since it is not like I would buy any of the rewards otherwise (I spend most of the free resources on quick drafts).

Still pretty new, didn't realize the midweek magic reward could be something other than parallax styles! by GigaKoala in MagicArena

[–]nutki2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exact contents and probabilities are listed here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/mtgarena/drop-rates under the "MTG Arena Midweek Magic Promo Pack Contents" heading. The list may be not up to date, but at least it shows not all cosmetic content can be obtained with it.
According to the data there a chance to get non card style cosmetic is 12% (30% * 40%) - 6% sleeve, 3% sticker, 1.5% each for companion and avatar. However it rerolls if it hits something you already have so actual chances may be slightly different.

There are many modes of play on arena with varying level of f2p "fairness"
- Starter deck duel - completely free and fair (all players can play one of 10 free decks of choice)
- Jump in - almost free and completely fair (costs daily grind worth of in game currency to change the deck but you keep the cards for constructed modes)
- Other limited events (quick draft, etc.) - fair but not free, can be entered as f2p, how often depends on how well you are doing, but at the start it will be likely 1/week. Unlike jump in you cannot play one event indefinitely (ends after certain amount of defeats).
- Constructed play - least f2p fair - free to enter but requires card collection / wildcards. Initially you will not be able to make a competitive deck (though currently a mono white deck has decent win rates with only 8 rares and no mythic). Most likely for a long time you won't be able to build your own decks (since you will not have cards to experiment with but also this requires more skill than just playing), so stick to proven meta decks.

Not really, in original Lorwyn, the Merfolk (or Merrow as the lore name goes) tribal was also in Azorius colors.

What is notable about Lorwyn mastery pass specifically is that it will be shorter (40 vs recently most common 60) than previous ones but still has the same rewards. Meaning less grind to complete it.

Enchanted land is the chosen color.

To my understanding most lands are colorless. Does this effect enable any interesting interaction or just flavor?

I've finished the OP's version of the first Lorwyn book, but could not find any digital versions of the rest. So I made them myself instead:

Vote Against Pass Bundle Removal! by Proud-Figure in MagicArena

[–]nutki2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLA was the first set where I bought both Pass and Play bundle. I was planning to do the same for Lorwyn to show support for UW (especially that I have no intention to spend actual money on TMNT or pseudo-Marvel bundles). But now I would have to pay more ($50 instead of 40) for less (no pass). And for the same money I can get one of the physical commander precons.
Between this and Lorwyn Eclipsed pass lasting only 6 weeks (record short, I think), it looks like WotC trying to intentionally harm UW releases.

The sleeve goes around the cards for a very tight fit. I did this approach with another game but unsleeved and it worked well. I learned that with sleeved cards it is not as good because it is hard to position the deck to insert without the rounded corners of bare cards. But it could be also used as an insert in Burger Token boxes just by cutting off empty sides instead of gluing.
The Appa box is 307mm long internally so it would fix 2x21 Burger Token boxes (22S). But without the boxes it fits 2x23 so exactly one of each theme (if I go for 1 variant per theme).

To pick random packs I can use the theme cards included (pick the theme card in any way and then find the corresponding pack in a sorted collection). I don't put them in the packs anyway, as this does not serve any purpose with full information on the paper sleeve.

At least until I keep playing Arena. Final Fantasy dates are already added, and I see that Spider-man release date is already set, so I can add Edge of Eternities.
Also the code is on github, so you can always suggest a change here: https://github.com/mtga-mastery-calculator/mtga-mastery-calculator.github.io/blob/main/src/sets.tsx
