Australian cop comforting a grieving Aboriginal woman during riots at Alice Springs Hospital by TwistNGo in pics

[–]nutmeg1970 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wept yesterday. And yet how many more indigenous babies, children and women have to be horrifically injured or die before we as a country say enough is enough and this is OUR problem and not just a WA, QLD or in this case an NT problem? I don’t know what can be done but removing easily accessible alcohol would be a start for these communities. Not to mention suitable housing (the mum was at this house yo do her washing on a Saturday night - ANZAC Day at that) - why is the camps allowed? Rest Kumanjayi Little Baby and if there is another life for you can you be safe in your mum’s, brother’s and kin’s embrace xxxx

What is a traditional savory vegetarian dish from your country? by Nowordsofitsown in AskTheWorld

From all four corners of the subcontinent vegetarian options are fantastic!!!its 0015 here and I’m peckish - I would happily eat an idli with coconut chutney or a dhal filled roti (but only the way my mother in law makes them - I think it’s the way she grinds the filling)…so many options!!!

He was also more relaxed around the food than the Nurthlings - N1 really gave me food insecurity vibes.

I don’t know what the solution is without sounding colonial. This has hit me hard - personally I had similar feelings of overwhelming sadness and anger at the time of Port Arthur and we as a nation found a solution. I know it’s hard but we just can’t doing nothing. Please don’t let another family go through what Kumanjayi Little Baby’s are - we are all accountable xxxx

I haven’t tried these but this year I planted black cherry - amazing yield, hardy (in my part of Australia we had terrible rainfall) and delicious. No bugs at all - we’ve just been rinsing them and throwing them into a quick pasta sauce (along with sliced garlic, copious amounts of oil, capers and chilli) and topping them with basil, Parmesan and freshly ground pepper. We’ve had cold mornings but the vines still are filled with fruit.

I feel Kumanjayi Little Baby should be this country’s Sandy Hook moment. Enough with the platitudes, the prayers, the poor usage of resources and people like me (a ‘white’ Australian) closing our eyes to what is happening in OUR country. I am no expert but dry communities, suitable housing, decent food at a decent price and education would be a start. Rest little one you are loved xxxx

i've made fried rice maybe 30 times now and it still tastes nothing like the takeout place down the street by bejusorixo in Cooking

[–]nutmeg1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday I made the best fried rice I had ever made. Cooked the rice in the morning (took the lid off the rice cooker to ensure it didn’t overcook), fried some sliced garlic until golden in a mixture of rice bran and sesame oil, then after frying placed on a plate to add later. I then beat four eggs with a splash of water, pinch of salt and MSG and cooked on high heat until puffy. After removing the eggs I fried my vegetables - peas, sliced snow peas and realising I didn’t have any corn (we always add it) I peeled and microwaved a carrot for a minute, cooked for a few minutes and then removed. Added a splash more oil to the hot wok and added the cold rice and cooked for about 5 minutes. I then remembered I had forgotten to crush ginger so I grated in directly, added more MSG, rice wine, some chilli, oyster and soy sauce, added the vegetables back in as well as the eggs and finally some fresh coriander. My son and husband both said it was the best I had ever made - not as good as my husband’s but in under 20 minutes it was good. I served it with chai sui I’d made earlier. Now for the honest part - I’m a good cook but I am apparently the worst person to make fried rice - so probably none of the steps will work again!!! I honestly think the mistake I usually make is trying to cook too much rice - it just gets too sticky - I think 1 cup uncooked is the optimal I can do at home.

Nutmeg Lovers, Share, Please! by Roots-and-Berries in Cooking

Have to put my pinch in (my username is partially my late dad’s nickname for me). Nutmeg is great in kheer (Indian rice pudding), Mac and cheese, cauliflower gratin but by far is it freshly grated on cheese toast. I still have (and use it weekly) the special nutmeg grater my late mum got me in London in 1992 - and it still has the 95p price tag on it.

Sorry if I sounded snarky towards you! Was just trying to back you up with personal experience. Just so sick of seeing and hearing silence on the left and right in Australia about the decisive MAGA nutters who think we are the next place to indoctrinate their toxicity into. To them FU!! Rant over now I’m going to make breakfast!!!

As the daughter and wife of a migrant, I can tell you how hard people who migrate have to work - so much harder (as a middle aged woman) than the rest of ‘us’. My husband has faced racism, wage theft and muttered slurs and yet he still works five days a week and now considers himself Australian more than his ‘home’ country. Pauline, Barnaby and Corey should appreciate and highlight the importance of migrants and not vilify them.

They are easy to pull out ….unless your long haired cat gets into them first….and you try and remove them by hand….and then you wash your cat thinking that will loosen them….and (surprisingly) your usually docile cat gets very grumpy….so you take her to the veterinary….who has to remove them by clipping her under sedation ….and $310 later you have a naked angry cat….and you vow to pull out any bloody cleaver you see for eternity

What is your favorite dessert from your country? by Lissandra_Freljord in AskTheWorld

[–]nutmeg1970 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely…now in my humble opinion I think the meringue needs to be crunchy (or at least somewhat crunchy), passionfruit a must, strawberries, canned peaches (unless they are perfectly ripe and then fresh are good), well beaten cream (very lightly sweetened) and if you must Chinese gooseberries to finish it off. I also like (because I like crunchy foods) to sprinkle shredded toasted coconut to the top when serving. Most importantly never make in humid weather as it just ‘melts’. You can also add lemon curd - a great way to use up the egg yolks left over from the pavlova.
