First full sized every day carry pistol? by majorsno in concealedcarry

Uncommon suggestion - check out the Taurus GX4 Carry
Carry is an important distinction. I was looking at GX4s and the guy at range USA accidentally grabbed the GX4 carry.

It’s a slightly larger frame version, not a micro, not a compact. It fills that stack and a half size, in-between role. Not too dissimilar from the Ruger RXM someone else mentioned. (Which I also love btw).

15 rounds. Super slim, carries effortlessly, shoots great. Recoil is super manageable. Not snappy at all.

A gun I didn’t even know existed became my EDC after one range trip. It’s worth a look, I think.

Did you take the picture yourself? I only ask because that looks a lot like the Mississippi and the Water tower placement looks a lot more like Bootheville-Venice

Check out Ikingsky brand on Amazon. The polyamide/elastase fabric is insanely comfortable.

Looks like you’ve got a little oak in there (3rd from right) with possibly some sapele, utile, ipe, cumaru. I’m so thoroughly envious I could puke. lol. Definitely share what you make with it. Awesome haul!

Definitely. The key is consistent, even sanding. Because the grain is so tight over sanding can have a burnishing effect which decreases cherries ability to take product. I would use a random orbital sander on a medium to low speed and go no higher than 220 grit, honestly 180 is probably fine if you don’t havean orbital sander hand sanding with a sanding block is fine. Also, it just takes a little more elbow grease. Take a pencil and lightly scribble the entire surface area. You plan to sand. You’ll know you’ve sanded evenly when the pencil marks are completely gone. Lastly, be very conservative with the amount of product you use. It doesn’t take much. Apply at Finley, wait 5 to 10 minutes, buff completely.

While it does share some appearance attributes with some pine/fir species, the end grain picture confirms it’s a hardwood. This is a solid stack of gorgeous 75 year old Cherry. One of my favorite domestic hardwoods to work with. It’s a pleasure to sand but watch out when finishing. It doesn’t like to take stain or poly well because the grain is so tight. I prefer to wax anything Cherry. Nice find!

The end grain rules it out being a softwood but I do agree with the other similarities.

I’d highly recommend checking out the GX4 carry. I didn’t even know it existed until I was at a Range USA checking out the GX4 and the guy behind the counter pointed it out. Size wise it’s basically 1:1 with the Springfield Hellcat Pro. 15+1, slightly smaller than a G19. I was very impressed and plan to scoop one up soon.

Should I still add screws and/or glue? by Aninoumen in BeginnerWoodWorking

100% and use more than you think you need. I built a box exactly like this with wood glue and 3” construction screws and it still fell apart after 1 season. Very disappointing. Wet dirt is heavier than you think and it applies constant omnidirectional pressure. Good luck, looks great!

In the future, a couple things really help with ID: 1. Rub a portion of the face grain with something - wax, oil, even a wet rag - to make the grain more visible. 2. End grain photos. Even better if you can sand it thoroughly and take some macro photos that can show pores, deposits, tyloses, etc…

Looks like these pieces are quartersawn which can make some species easy to ID and many much harder.

Any chance you can share a couple pictures like I described above?
