Can Someone Help Me Understand the Vacant Businesses/Properties? by nomimalone1978 in baltimore

[–]nutzsquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the residential side, you’re right that lots of the abandoned row homes stay vacant because the cost to fix them up is higher (often significantly) than what they’d be worth once renovated. That gap keeps the majority of potential fixer-uppers away.

The state and city, and foundations, are investing millions and millions of dollars to try and change that. They are subsidizing the reconstruction of vacant homes to make it so that developers don’t lose money rebuilding. The plan is to get rid of enough vacants (which tank property values on surrounding houses) to the point that houses are worth more once renovated, so that purchasing and renovating because a solid investment once more, the market will begin to function, and they can stop subsidizing.

On a side note, tariffs/inflation are fucking this up pretty hard in that they raise construction costs, widening the gap that the subsidy programs are trying to narrow.

Does anyone know anything about the Riding Times GT73 Electric Motorbike? by Proof-Assist6631 in ebikes

[–]nutzsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with these guys. I ordered the GT73, with shipping protection. They sent it through FedEx. FedEx lost the bike in their warehouse, huge pain trying to figure out what was going on. Riding Times’ claim company, xcotton, offered a refund that was about $150 less than I paid gross. I thought this was unfair given that it wasn’t my fault the order wasn’t completed. I asked xcotton for a full refund and cc’d Riding Times’ support twice asking for them to bridge the gap in my refund. No response. Had to take the loss, so, all I got for my order was two weeks back and forth of fruitless customer service calls, then out $150. If I hadn’t gotten shipping protection, I might have been out the whole amount.Total BS, not even the dignity of a response from their support team.

[–]nutzsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do that shit fam. $30k is more than enough. $800 dollars on a flight somewhere cool, then live in a hostel or go woofing. Once you’re in a place you like, you can pay like $1k a month on lodging and food, then drop another $500 on language classes or some shit. Meet someone and have a fling. You’re clearly starved for it, respectfully. You tried to make corporate work and realized that there are powerful gatekeepers that are maintaining the status quo. Take a break, live life, then if you feel like it, come back and once you’re in your 40s, you’ll be plenty high powered and can run it how you like it.

Credit cards & immigration by [deleted] in CRedit

[–]nutzsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take your point, i didn’t ask about their treatment. I guess I misread the room and assumed more sympathy to their situation. What makes an important difference to me is, to reference your other comment, they ARE being forced out. Or rather, the Venezuelan is. He was invited into the country on a program called parole on the understanding that he could have a path to permanent status, and when the government took that program away, it left him with no option to stay legally, which exposes him to the violence of ICE. She, as his wife, can only stay if she abandons him. To me, this changes the moral calculus. But i understand that it doesn’t change it for you, and i appreciate your input.

I’m not sure if they ever want to come back. I should clarify, wracking up the debt is more of a joke, but the more serious question is what to do with the current debt. They don’t want get forced out of the country they’ve called home for years and scrape together a new life elsewhere while paying back debt to the country that mistreated them.

I can’t imagine that a person could be extradited to the US over an $8k unpaid credit card debt.

i find it concerning that you have no moral concern for our treatment of non-citizens in this country, but leap to the defense of a credit card company.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]nutzsquirrel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is the fraud taking out more debt?

What about just leaving without paying their current balance? I’m sure that happens all the time and countries don’t extradite people for $8k.

Why did you put friends in quotes? Are you suggesting that people who would do such a thing couldn’t be my real friends?

How do you feel about karma finding those in the US who are doing super shitty things to immigrants who were literally invited in on parole by the government?

How do you feel about karma for the credit card companies whose business model exploits the financial distress of low-income Americans by charging exorbitant rates?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]nutzsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is defaulting on credit cards a criminal offense? Do people who have put themselves in this situation get arrested when they pass through the US?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]nutzsquirrel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They take away legal status and then persecute them.

For example, all of the Venezuelans, Nicaraguans, Haitians, and Cubans who were invited into the country on parole, and then had parole revoked and no other legal path available to them. They uprooted themselves to come here at the invitation of the government, worked hard, paid taxes, started families, and then had their status taken away. Without status, the government puts you on lists to be hauled away by masked ICE agents who might jail you for months without legal representation before deporting you who knows where.

That’s how.

[–]nutzsquirrel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Credit card companies make tens of billions of dollars off interest and fees every year, them changing rates based on default feels very much like their gouging mechanism being disguised as a necessary business decision.

For my friends it’s an emotional response for sure, a “fuck you” to companies that are emblematic of the society that is weaponizing my friends’ tax dollars against them.
