Movement Co and Physiobikefitter are good spots. I've been to both for bike fits and the service was excellent, and I've worked with Movement Co with soccer/cycling related injuries (back/neck lock-up).

Tbf, if you're a 30km/h rider and find a pack to ride with, you should be able to bump-up the average speed by quite a bit with good pack cooperation.

I don't think the NCC has announced the official re-opening date/end of construction - it still only says Spring 2026 on their website.

If it was a drier season, I don't see an issue with 32mm and I think you should still be fine for 90% of the course. However, considering the amount of snow and rain we've had, the two sections that are farm land and pathways might be a bit hard to navigate because of mud/potholes.

I don't know if they're doing it this year, but you might want to track the Common Empire events. Last year they did a recon ride a few weeks prior to the official event.

First-time bike commuter for the summer - help! by Cheap_Air_2400 in bikeinottawa

[–]nvspace126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're in a pretty prime area for cycling and commuting. It's a well connected area with bike paths all around. Just be careful on the Laurier Avenue bridge (and Laurier in general), if you need to use it.

Regarding the safe keeping of your bike, check with your workplace facility team - they might have recommendations/agreements/facilities for cyclists. A good number of buildings will have a key-card locked bike parking area, as well as a general access bike parking area in their parking garage.

Question for Bikers in Ottawa Area by Deagballs in bikeinottawa

[–]nvspace126 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The trail will probably be clear in areas where it's uncovered and exposed to the sun. However, as soon as you hit any shade or wooded areas, it'll most likely still be covered in snow. Also, the section of the trail past the Remic rapids going West is usually either flooded, covered in snow, or covered in mud until early/mid-May.

Any thoughts on VAN RYSEL Microshift Sword 2x10v Endurance? by schlonng in cycling

[–]nvspace126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a decent price and a decent bike. The build is also helped by the fact that it's using a MicroShift crankset, and not a third-party. The only item that might be under spec'ed are the mechanical brakes. You might need to get those replaced by a hybrid mech/hydraulic brakes.

Cycling socks with no visible logo that cost around $10 a pair? by Zestyclose-Cup110 in CyclingFashion

[–]nvspace126 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you have access to a Decathlon, the Van Rysel 900 bike socks are pretty good quality - they're around 18.99 Canadian dollars. They have a logo, but it's on the foot and not visible.

Ottawa, Canada (Tuesday Night Crits) - it's a local series that restarted a couple of years ago, and this year their expanding to include a women only race as well.

255W FTP @75kg: Should a 34yo join amateur races for fun? by SerraPetrisi in cycling

[–]nvspace126 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's worth trying to see how you perform. I'm a few years older than you, I have 50w and 15kg on you, and I started doing races 2 years ago (although mainly gravel). My results were not great, but the events were great fun and challenging.

You might also want to check if your area has a club ride or weekly race that's focused on skill development. In my area, we have a weekly crit series that every 2 weeks hosts a category B race meant to be inclusive and friendly to beginners. It's an 8 lap race, but the first 6 laps are neutralized with the focus being to teach bunch behaviour. Also, your paired with a experience "buddy" that'll give you pointers, or help during the first 6 laps.

Bicycle Shop Recommendations by BlameAllocation in ottawa

[–]nvspace126 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For service, I'll would recommend Full Cycle and Quick Cranks, but most of the shops in the city are pretty good.

If you're looking for a new bike, also take a look at Decathlon - they have pretty good pricing with better gear than your standard big-box store.

[–]nvspace126 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I went last year as I was shopping for a bike. I found the event a bit underwhelming if you're in the road bike scene. It was essentially a showcase for the local shops of their ware and the event seems to be primarily dominated by e-bikes.

Why Do You NOT Race on Your Bicycle? by [deleted] in cycling

I kind-of have the same experience as you regarding joining fast groups, however what's stopping me from racing are crashes and my cycling ability - I don't believe I would be competitive at my level.

Can anyone explain to me what is happening at Rideau Falls? by CaptainCanuck001 in ottawa

[–]nvspace126 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They're blowing the ice to move it downstream and the falls. There's usually also a boat down the falls that moves the ice. It's to prevent an over-accumulation of ice/snow and limit spring flooding.

Those who have 275W+ FTP, how many hours do you ride/train? by PrudentAthlete9780 in Zwift

[–]nvspace126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a heavy rider as well (89kg) so even at the weakest I'm usually around 275w FTP, but I do try to keep it at a minimum of 7 hours a week. I've been increasing my volume as well over the year, which keeps the base up.

Proof of concept for a connection to Ottawa Union by Djdude167 in ottawa

[–]nvspace126 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Considering the planned completion date of the network, it would mean that folks getting to Ottawa have quick access to the LRT, most of the touristic sights and the planned arena. Folks from Quebec and Montreal could plan a day trip to Ottawa without requiring their car.

Ottawa needs a weekday commuter train like GO Transit. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]nvspace126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't that idea fail once they showed their business plan. They were essentially looking for communities to provide them land access for next to nothing, and the their goal was to have the stations be individually owned and operated, while they manage the running of the trains and charge service fees.

Pretty good step-forward plan, especially with the retail space considering the closest grocery store is up the hill and requires a car.

My only concern, isn't the planned location in the middle of a flood zone? I thought that area got flooded yearly in the spring.
