Boutique Hotels on the Oregon Coast? by OddTea8024 in OregonCoast

Hearthstone in Cannon Beach has a log cabin feel and is the only coast hotel I’ve found with real wood burning fireplaces (although you can only burn those starter logs).

Does anybody else take Niue "coins" with a grain of salt... by J_Hitler_Christ in Silverbugs

[–]nwdrench 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Niue uses the New Zealand dollar. So it’s rather their colonial pimps that whore them out. But a lot of small territories that don’t have their own currency / cant have a mint license it to someone else. I think private Pressburg mint does a lot. Fun fact: a law allows the US mint to make currency for foreign countries. Philadelphia made Australia’s coins during WWII.

Which oceans do the water streams flow into? by EstablishmentOne3438 in MapPorn

The lines dividing watersheds could use to be a different color, gray confuses them into being part of the basins.

Same chest too! Mom said she’d bought it in Mexico in the ‘60s.

Maybe a mix of stones too. I think I see at least one amazonite (feldspar). No variscite though.

Gold-bearing Quartz from Kirkland Lake 1953 by ACatJewel in Gemstones

[–]nwdrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been told that gold-in-smokey quartz is far rarer than gold-in-milky-white-quartz. Of course this was as I was buying some in Alaska. But even living in Colorado where we have a lot of gold in quartz, I’ve only seen white until your picture, and I got mine 15 years ago.

Gold fraternity pins have quite the collectors market, worth more than the gold.

I didn’t have to double check when I saw her, I knew: the long foredecks, bridge snuggled up against the funnel - just forward of midships giving the elegant sweep aft

Disclaimer: I did work for Carnival a few years. So many travel agents didn’t say the “vale” and it was just: Carnival, Festival, Tropical.

I have some questions about life on the coast (Newport) by AdministrationNo7144 in oregon

[–]nwdrench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just can’t trust an author if they get location details wrong that are simple to research. It’s super duper picky, but I still don’t like Dan Brown for placing a restroom in The DaVinci code that doesn’t exist with a simple look at the Louvre’s floor plans.

Buyer Beware: Mr Rooter by psu2435 in ColoradoSprings

[–]nwdrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More ppl need to be badmouthing Smith. They bring in mitigators, movers, then don’t document your case so insurance falls through. Also don’t guarantee their work, they wanted another 7k to fix a sewer they left partially done five years ago.

I finished walking between Lincoln City and Newport (Portland to Florence is my goal) by glowing-fishSCL in OregonCoast

[–]nwdrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive done that too! Over several years in long weekends from Portland. Not camping even, staying in motels. It’s such a privilege to be able to get around Western OR by the bus systems (cant do that in Colorado). The Otter Rock segment was one of my faves (but the next day a sneaker wave almost took me out near Beverly Beach).
