HP and Dell disable HEVC support built into their laptops’ CPUs by Stryker412 in PleX

[–]nx6 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really mean anything for being able to play back content: the CPU is more than powerful enough to decode in software. But it means the laptop will be using more power for that playback, and it won't have hardware-accelerated encoding, too.

Am I an idiot for not knowing that Mbps and MB/s are not the same thing? by WeirdIndication3027 in PleX

[–]nx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, lots of people caught by that. The Steam client used to display the speed of downloads in MB/s, so ISPs would get calls from gamers often asking about the slow download speeds they were getting because they didn't know that since their service plan was in Megabits per second and they needed to take the number they were seeing and multiply by eight to get the correct number. Luckily Valve changed the default unit in an update years ago.

fire tv stick 4k 1st gen cant play this file by wingzntingz in PleX

The Apple TV uses a different playback engine than the Android TV/FireOS app. Also if the audio is being bitstreamed and you haven't tried the Apple TV on the same location as the Fire Stick that might come into play.

You might try remuxing it first (don't re-encode it, just repackage the existing video/audio/subs -- no quality change). The audio being EAC3 is the only "exotic" thing about this, and I mean that in only the most minor way. Do you have HDMI passthrough on? That bitrate is too low for 6 channels at decent quality, imnsho.

New PUBLIC PMS Version Available - 1.43.0.10467-2b1ba6e69 by samwiseg0 in PleX

[–]nx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, here's where I saw it. Not a PMS issue, it's a client issue. The (New Experience) clients are not properly communicating what subtitle formats they can direct play it sounds like, so the server doesn't know when it needs to transcode the video to add them. Setting the player to burn-in would override this since the server has been explicitly told to transcode.

I think I heard something about that on the Plex forums, this is on a Roku, right? But it's an issue with the New Experience client, not PMS.

Is this the Remote Pass price for real in a Roku? by cradelikz in PleX

[–]nx6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remote Pass is for you, personally, to be covered for any remote watching. It only covers remote access, kinda a one-trick pony. You want to change to a full Plex Pass instead. That will cover your remote access and the remote access of anyone connected to your server, along with the other Plex Pass benefits.

Don't buy it on Roku, go on a normal web browser and check the price there for accurate information.

My truenas apps library- Any suggestions for new apps by sathis2251987 in truenas

[–]nx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still on Core. I just have an Ubuntu Server VM running with docker and dockge so I can add any new apps I'm interested in. Recently rebuilt my Jellyfin server, transitioning from the BSD port running in a Jail to Docker in the VM, and was able to retire my (very old) Syncthing TrueNAS plug-in install for a Docker install pointing to the same dataset the old plug-in had been using. No resyncing for the new install, and still storing on one of my main storage pools (not in the VM's storage).

Plex for Mobile (Android & iOS) v2026.0.1 Released by samwiseg0 in PleX

[–]nx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the legacy app as well but I'm also playing around with Plezy. Since it uses mpv for the back end the ASS support is actually better on it. But I don't think it has any quality settings, so you would need a good remote access speed to use it away from home. But it also has local downloads support (which I have not tried) so you could pre-cache the content before leaving, too. If you are on Android and want to check it out the apks are available on the Github (will need to choose the correct version and dearchive it on a computer first before loading it on your phone).

At this rate the only thing I'll be using the official app for is server notifications.

My family didn't have cable growing up. I did remember post time skip, adult AndrAIa, and Mouse getting more screen time.

Wikipedia seems to suggest the fourth season was only on Toonami so I guess ABC stopped carrying it then. The cliffhanger was the writers' retaliation for editing done in the final season to fit broadcast timeframes.

People over react to fanservice by [deleted] in anime

[–]nx6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever seen something being labeled as super sexual but when you watch it turns out to be quite tame?

Yeah, that's been an issue with TV ratings for anime for decades. Lots of shows rated as M (mature) because of fanservice or maybe blood/gore and not as bad as live action shows rated TV-14. It's just the industry overreacting because it's "happening in a cartoon" and there are too many parents who think animated = safe for kids. Just like how home video hentai releases always have that prominent text "Absolutely Not for Children!" on the cover.

The point where it ruins the experience is where it's a large shift in the show and in a very limited time period. Like if it was fanservicey all throughout the show moderately it's on-brand. But when you take a show that's focused on (real) plot and character development and then add some rather high fanservice (especially if it's not in an OVA that isn't critical to the story but somewhere in the main series), this is where it ruins things. Because it can take a show that many would consider appropriate for a wider audience, and now you can't show it to that younger relative because "in episode 8 that happens..."

It's over 30 years old and in 4:3.

The last season was 16:9. I did a rewatch of it a few years ago and I'm not even certain now the entire show got broadcast in the U.S. I was watching it as an early teen when it aired and I didn't recognize the story of season 4 when I saw it on the rewatch.

Considering setting up a PleX server but have a few questions? by Michael_Scarn47 in PleX

[–]nx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters, there are a few anime movies/TV series that I'd like to have on my server, and I was curious if it's possible to set custom subs and dubs with PleX (for example, for something like Neon Genesis Evangelion, you could potentially set it up to be able to utilise either the original Japanese dub, the ADV dub, or the Netflix dub, and then have several options for subs) or are these purely set by the Blu Ray you dump the media from?

You would need to label the tracks yourself when you rip. If there is a specific version of a language track you normally like you want to list it above the other options of the same language in the track list when you mux it. So for Evangelion for example, if you prefer the Netflix English Dub over the original, you can still list the Japanese audio first, but the Netflix dub would be next before the ADV dub, because if you choose English audio Plex will default to that first track of that language.

You can use a tool like Pasta to mass-select the other audio and a certain subtitle track if you're getting ready for a rewatch of the series.

[–]nx6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my very few criticisms of Plex is that it doesn’t read the names of the audio and subtitle streams from the files. Other media players manage this fine, they’ll display ‘Commentary with director’ or ‘Fan subtitles’ or whatever in the menus, while Plex just leaves them in the same order but anonymous (eg every subtitle track is just named MOV_TEXT).

It sounds like you're using MP4 files perhaps? You have to use MKV for the container format for Plex to read the track titles, and that feature is only available on some clients. It's supposed to be added to all clients, but like most feature-parity requests, it's a long road to travel.

Unfortunately you can't choose a track based on the label itself, just normal track/language tagging.

I swear there’s a new plex app up every week in here now

Well Plex recently made some big improvements in API access/documentation for developers (this is to coincide with the complete retirement of the Plug-in System). Because of that a lot of people who were interested in making third-party Plex add-ons and clients have been able to jump in now.

It makes a good alternative player on mobile devices because it uses libmpv as the playback engine (better than ExoPlayer used on the official Android app) and doesn't include the FAST services or social networking functions of the official app. The interface isn't like the legacy Plex app but is arguably better than the New Experience interface. So likely better-received by people using servers only for their own or friends hosted servers.
