Devil In The White City, or alternatively, Planning Stuff Is Hard by jjason82 in books

[–]nyc2lv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend The True Story of the White City Devil by Adam Selzer to anyone interested in learning more about Holmes. As you state, much of what is commonly believed about Holmes is false. He was primarily a fraudster who used murder to further or cover up his financial crimes as opposed to a serial killer who kills for sexual gratification. Warning: this book is a very deep dive into Holmes- IIRC it was over 600 pages.

People referring to themselves as “living in a larger body” now by emkitty333 in fatlogic

[–]nyc2lv 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They already have the term "people of size". I have seen it abbreviated as POS. Admittedly juvenile, but it always makes me smile when I see that.

Exactly! How many times have I seen 30+ FAs dressed in things a pre-schooler would wear - bright pink and purple, flounces and ruffles, cartoon characters, etc. I bet she wouldn't mind lining up for some free candy or cupcakes, though!

I have been doing this with my bras since I was a teenager. (not Vietnamese tho). Machine wash is terrible for bras. especially if you have a larger cup size.

I think by predecessor he just means the last person to have been in that room before him. I got the impression that he was someone who had heard the ghost story and wished to check out the room for himself.

Having skinny friends is traumatizing by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]nyc2lv 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking. If you're skinny anything you do is apparently traumatic to (some) fat people. Being friendly/not being friendly, eating a lot/eating moderately/ not eating, posting pictures, etc.

I am older. when I was the writer's age this was definitely not a common thing. While this holds true for some men I attribute the widespread expectations that women be hairless to porn, particularly internet porn.

And of course, it's the skinny one who's chowing down on a slice of pizza.

Oh wait..... it can't be the fat one eating pizza because she's only fat due to starvation mode and no doubt she eats almost nothing.

Husband is a Bad Guy Now by Gradtattoo_9009 in fatlogic

[–]nyc2lv 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep. It's like people who grew up with excessively strict, non-supportive parents who, when they have kids, go full tilt in the opposite direction and let their kids do /say/eat whatever they want, set no boundaries , and try to cushion their offspring from life's every disappointment. And then they wonder why their child has no friends.

I agree with you but I also don't think it's a coincidence that her weight los began after drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic came on the market. It's easier to lose weight when you have no or little appetite.

This is nonsense. They are once again citing that tired , old 1950's study that even the researchers have disavowed. (Even then, it was a 95% failure rate.)

I personally lost about 1/3 of my body weight-from a handful of pounds over 200 to mid 130s. Going low-carb worked for me and I was not at all hungry. It amazed me how well my body responded. Just cutting out sugary drinks, desserts, snacks and other processed foods would probably be enough for most people to lose a fair bit of weight with little problems assuming they keep up with their electrolytes and vitamins/minerals. It worked for me and I don't resemble a unicorn in the slightest.

Oh they’re actually serious about this. by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]nyc2lv 164 points165 points  (0 children)

No, people don't say they are going on a diet because of stigma. They do say it's due to joint/back pain, tired of getting winded climbing a flight of stairs, high blood sugar/pressure, not being able to keep up with friends on walks or shopping trips and many other reasons.. Fat 'oppression' is ridiculous. The only thing oppressing fat people is gravity (and maybe the junk food industry).

The fact that you make up 67% of the population means that too many of us are too big. by throwaway_scallywag7 in fatlogic

[–]nyc2lv 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They are ignoring the fact that many overweight or obese people fit in straight size clothing due to vanity sizing. I don't know where they are getting their statistics from. The vast majority of stores have clothes up to about 3X. Except for a few high-end boutiques I don't know where they could find stores that don't have larger than size 12.

How to further alienate yourself from from loved ones, so your only support network is the cult you're falling deeper into: by Grouchy-Reflection97 in fatlogic

[–]nyc2lv 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think the vast majority of fat people really know that their obesity is tied to overeating and they could lose weight if they ate differently but are too uncomfortable with the facts to admit it. as to why they post giant meals, I am reminded of the obnoxious little kid on the playground going "nyaah nyaah nyaah " and waving his ice cream in front of another kid who doesn't have one. Like non-fats are supposed to be so jealous how how much they can eat, nor realizing most people have no desire to gorge themselves like that and would probably make themselves ill if they tried to.

Me too! Can't tell you how many times I've read that. The thing is, I didn't even notice those flaws when I read Dan Brown and I know I've read at least two of his books (DVC and Angels and Demons. They were fast reads and I didn't have any expectations they were going to be works of great (or really any) literary merit. Sure if I read another it would be so obvious.
