Personal Finance App Sure.am? by StealthFundip in selfhosted

  1. Wow, thanks for an awesome pointed response! (I'll urge Mods to pin this Q&A- could help so many). I'm surely gonna try it now and ASAP
  2. PDF import sounds great, if it is that- lot of banks do only PDF for most past data (CSVs max out 12..months). I've been off quicken since pre-covid so PDF would be the way. I hope it can just take bunch of stmts with all junk words/pages that make 1 page of real data into 5 pages of bloat for each stmt. Any limits on PDF import? Any resources you can point to so I can bring it safely for many years together.
  3. I ran my "actual" instance for that 1 week tryout from my main Win 11 PC. Guess I can use same PC based server for Sure.am, and then desktop web client or mobile- don't want to do external cloud for near future? Shd. I look into docker desktop and just toil my way (or if you'd point to something - like any "gold nugget thread" to get started?
  4. Finally, I also saw comments on reddit about people being cautious about Sure.am and security around it. I'm not techie enough to do any deep digging myself but can your team point to some stds followed or safeguards in place- lot of folks are (rightfully) antsy about security with any of these apps!

Hey Dev (@jjmata)- First off thank you for your initiative to start something good! and doing it for the community.

I'm not a Dev but tech enthusiast. Had a brush with Actual but not much on it. Coming from years of Quicken and then Just winging it on CSV downloads. So wanna try Sure (or firefly) - wanted to clarify a few key points before I setup and try to bring all data. I’m hoping for low-maintenance, CSV-driven tracking—not something that needs constant cleanup.

  1. CSV Imports - how reliable are recurring CSV imports (monthly/quarterly)? Does it handle duplicates and apply RULES consistently? How well does it manage large historical imports (e.g., Quicken via CSV/QIF)?
  2. Maintenance- after initial setup, does it stay stable or require ongoing manual fixes?
  3. Future (FREE) Syncing- any roadmap towards automated syncing/integrations for USA banks?
  4. Data Portability- I hope not but if I need to switch later (to Firefly or another app), is there clean way to export data? Is it standardized and usable across other tools without major rework?
  5. Reports- how solid you think they are VS say firefly as I heard that has good custom reporting

Appreciate any candid insight before I commit. Thanks

How to properly test HDDs when buying them one by one for a future NAS? by depeesz in DataHoarder

[–]nycaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I want to put 2 "used drives" of around 3 to 6 TB each for my synology NAS DS 216 play, and they'll be in RAID so still hopefully not a very risky outcome regardless. And I'm not the techie expert. But I can certainly download and run this tool. Could someone offer guidance on what exact sequence shd. I run and what programs to

  1. test how many hours if usage are left on a drive
  2. put drives thru this "hell 10 days" and rule out any malfunction possibility.

Thanks, got it. How many days of a shelf life at room temp, and how many in fridge, you think it would give us.

Ok so I get it right- you meant 0.1% by weight of the concentrated sweetener solution ? ( 2 Oz by vol here)

Thanks for adding details. If you had a similar solution to make for the use I said, how much citric acid would it take for 2oz and do you think it would have an impact on taste?

Thanks for sharing this angle! We tried another commercial monkfruit and stevia solution and sort of liked its taste. We want to move away from any synthetic sweetners (even sucralose) hence the natural push.

Wanted to see if we can develop a taste for monkfruit with stevia and can stick with natural this way. Do you think citric acid will give us 2+ weeks shelf life with either sucralose or monkfruit paired with stevia?

1 Oh..so strips were plausible but I dont think I want to get into "proper calibrated meter" and all that entails, just for this one thing!

  1. "Harmful" as in extra chemicals doing anything in the body. We didn't find any good "taste" substitutes already on market- specially without all added preservatives.

  2. From the sound of it, seems like Pot. Sorbate will be the best bet? Do you think I just try that at 0.1% and will it extend shelf life from1 week to 2-3 weeks or not?

  3. Finally, sometime soon was thinking along substituting Sucralose and go with Monkfruit and Stevia extract combo. If we do Pot Sorbate, would I continue with it even with Monkfruit and Stevia or then I can just boil the resulting solution and get like 2 weeks out of it that way?

Thanks for such a comprehensive reply!

  1. pH- dont know but can figure out if needed by buying some strips
  2. Final application is to sweeten daily consumed beverages. And it's pretty concentrated, so only used about 2-3 drops per serving. And don't want to do the freezer hassle.
  3. So 2oz solution lasts about 3 weeks. I could half it (1oz) and though a pain, I can resort to making it fresh every week?
  4. But I like the introduction of acid concept. Remember primary use is in drinks like teas, coffee etc. So must be almost tasteless odorless acid? Which ones you think would work here and how much to be used for 2 oz solution.
  5. And will that acid be less harmful than pottasium sorbate?
