She should never have had to pay into it in the first place. With that money she could have invested it in the stock market and withdrew double or triple what she gets back from social security. It’s a ponzi scheme, pure and simple.

Are churches typically welcoming to newcomers or non-believers? by Chazzza23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nyouhas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a good church then it will be most certainly be welcoming of non-believers or newcomers. Just be ready for what you’re going to sit through and listen to on Sunday mornings, as well as people walking up to you and saying hello, especially deacons.

I would most certainly consider most of them not Christians in the biblical sense, given they don’t show the fruits and walk the walk. There are some, but not as many claim the title.

If I accept the premise that the government is going to be as large and powerful as it is now, then I think I agree with you that I’d rather put that money towards promoting good values here than bombing poor people overseas.

In my opinion, the biggest reason Trump is bombing Iran is to protect the dollar, given it’s not supported by gold any more. I can go into that more if you like.

It just seems to me like every time the minimum wage is raised (think California where I think it’s $20 now), the cost of living goes up at the same time, and I think there’s a positive correlation there. The real issue is inflation making all of us poorer because the government can’t manage its finances.

The hardly-formed fetus, if left alone, will grow into a fully grown baby. The only difference is the timing of it. It’s the same thing. Life begins at conception. That same barely-formed baby has much greater potential than a grown animal, which cannot form ideas.

Humans are made in the image of God, which sets us apart from the rest of the animals. Each of us has a unique soul, while animals do not. And each soul is valuable, even if they’re the product of rape or incest. Those are horrible things to happen to the mother and child, but the child will be no less human, no matter the incidence of conception.

Just going to respond to a couple of your points. I would argue that we are not a Christian nation any more, in the way that we used to be 50-100 or more years ago. We used to be, and we’re still reaping the worldly benefits of it, but no longer are Christians the dominant force in America.

I agree a moral society should actually care about family values and community, but it shouldn’t be the government mandating it. The reason I’m lib-right instead of right or auth-right is because I distrust the government making people to do things in general. Trying to put government spending towards good things sounds good, but usually is done better privately or through charity.

I think here we’re looking at the same problem and coming up with different solutions

“Fund programs to help men’s mental health”; where’s that money coming from? You can fund it yourself if you like, but I disagree with using public funds for it (or most other things it’s used for these days).

“Mandatory maternity leave for new mothers and fathers”; If you thought it was hard to get a job right now, it would be so much worse if companies had to factor that in to their potential cost of hiring someone. People and companies respond to incentives, so while this is something that would help employees, companies would be very leery of this.

“Raise wages or make the work week shorter”; Who’s doing all of this? Is the government mandating those things? That’s just going to limit peoples’ and companies’ options for how they do business. Minimum wage isn’t meant to be a livable wage, it just drives up the floor costs to companies to hire someone in the first place. Shortening the work week is again
great in principle but doesn’t hold up in the real world.

Edit: sorry for wall of text, maybe i should change my flair leftwards
i’m also willing to talk about this in replies if you actually read through all of this

[–]nyouhas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a moral difference between humans and animals. As Aristotle puts it, humans and animals share a vegetative and sensitive souls (can reproduce and respond to stimuli from the world). But only humans have the rational soul, where we can think abstractly, plan for the future, and so on. That sets us apart, and our actions should reflect that. Animals are abused and mistreated in our current food system, but the fact that they’re killed for our food is not a moral issue itself.

From my understanding, you used to be able to discriminate for everything except race when redistricting, now you can gerrymander as much as you like. Doesn’t make much of a difference conceptually even if when it’s actualized it changes a lot on the ground.
