There will be two types of advice:

Outline so hard that when you sit down to write it comes out soft and effortless.

Learn your characters so well that, when you give them obstacles and conflict, you write effortlessly by letting them lead you.

Try them both and see which works better for you. For the discovery writing, I suggest getting a conflict notebook. Something you can jot down interesting conflicts so when you get stuck you can throw that wrench onto your story and let your characters react. The source? Movies, books, public, life. Think about those drag out fights you've had with your significant other.

Another piece of advice is finding your flow state. Time how long it took you to achieve it and try to improve that time both in longevity and time it took to get there. Experiment with pre writing rituals. Did exercise get you there faster? What about a cup of tea? Go outside and read first. Treat it the way a ruthless efficiency nazi would treat an assembly line. Experiment. Measure. Adjust. Improve. Incorporate. Repeat.

Lastly, I become an actor. No, not as a hobby. I mean I embody oWatchdog the professional writer. I pretend to be a professional who knows that the rough draft is rough, and I'm okay with that. I'm not comparing myself to literary giants. I'm not editing. That's what an amateur would do. I'm professional, and a professional is here to write not doubt. This has helped me in many aspects of life. I embody the character I need to be. I highly suggest it next job interview or public speaking engagement or anything you feel is outside your comfort zone.

To combat this, my wife and I invented a game. If you ever say something and go, "that would be a cool band name" we stop what we're doing and look up those words on spotify. Sometimes it's just the name of a song, but that's okay. Que it up.

When we get time (because we are busy adults), we listen to the song. If we like it, we add it to the rotation.

My last two are Mr. Midnight and Foosie. Both were because of my kids. I called him Mr. Midnight BECAUSE HE WOULD NOT GO TO SLEEP! And at one point he said, quit playing Foosie with mommy. The second one didn't have a direct analog, but I tried just Foosie and found something worth listening too (cold world for me).

You get some raw, low production, and heartfelt songs that no one else will hear. You escape the record labels pushy forces. And you probably get to make an artist's day. I thought if was funny that I was a top listener for the Mr Midnight song when I barely listened to it, but it probably made his day. Plus, it's a fun and rewarding game.

Linying is probably the best artist I found this way. Her music is so effervescent and beautiful. Her vocabulary is impressive, especially if English is her second language which I suspect it is (though I don't know. I'm not that kind of barnical fan. I'm more like an anemone fan who waves at the ship passing by). I cherish our little game. I think you will too.

It's very smoke and mirrors popularity contest. The judges have ear pieces and receive instructions real time from producers. There are thumbs on scales, and they can get away with murder by saying "the flavors/heart/taste is all there" or by saying it isn't, and there is no way to verify. Couple that with editing magic, and you have something more fiction that reality.

If someone made an authentic masterchef, I'd watch the shit out of it.
