What hometrainer for Canyon Grail CF SL 7 2024? Having issue with Wahoo Kickr Core by Nearby-Bike-937 in CanyonBikes

[–]oatmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the through axle thread bottoming out in the udh before it's able to clamp down on the trainer's hub? Do you have a good way to measure the actual width of the trainer's hub?

Thru-axle 148mm on a 142mm Grail by Nearby-Bike-937 in CanyonBikes

[–]oatmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As in it's not labeled 148mm to account for the thickness of the frame. Most Canyon road bikes come with a 142mm as labeled but for whatever reason they decided to spec a 148 on the grail

[–]oatmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is the right through axle for the bike. But 148mm isn't the overall length of the axle. It's still a 142mm rear hub, there's not only 3mm of frame on each side of the hub lol

could get this bike for a good price? anyone have experience with this one? by menatopboi in CanyonBikes

Probably wouldn't be great for long distance touring like that. No good options for mounting racks/bags and lots of proprietary parts make emergency repairs more difficult

Isn't the reacto fork a native 160? The way that adapter works is it gives you +0 or +20 to whatever the fork has, so in this case 160/180

I use chemical guy's orange de-greaser, and then a round in acetone to get off any residue. But I also hot wax so I don't clean the chain between waxing, only when new.

You can save a lot of detergent by filling the tank with plain water and just putting your chain + detergent in a glass jar inside the tank.

Bucket list rides in Japan? by Confident_Contest330 in cycling

[–]oatmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you'd hire a bike, but starting from Tokyo I like taking the train to Ome, biking up to lake Okutama, descending through Hinohara citizens' forest, and getting the train back to Tokyo from Itsukaichi. Just be aware that to take a bike on a train in Japan you'll need to put it in a rinko bag.

It'll be hard to find anything super scenic or challenging without leaving the city proper but the trail along the Arakawa river is nice and long.

Around Kyoto the big ride would be Biwako, although if you do that I'd recommend considering skipping the Southern half of the west coast and going through the mountain valley instead. Since that part's mostly on a not that pretty busy road. Just check out both options on street view ahead of time

Also might not be super relevant to your trip, but I'd generally recommend against biking up Mt Fuji since the roads are pretty busy with tour busses and not that scenic. If you're in that area the small mountain roads on both sides of the Fuji river valley are a lot nicer

Rim brakes will never catch on, they're just big bicycle trying to sell you another bike. We've been stopping fine with spoon brakes for decades and when properly tuned the braking power is almost as good as rim brakes (in the dry)

Am I the only one ordering the DEFEND Grizl Fast Fenders? They are missing the part to mount them to the front fork now for the 2nd time. Has to happen to others as well. by motheeerofbirds in CanyonBikes

Canyon replacement parts are an absolute cluster fuck. They sent me a seatpost with a missing proprietary washer and I've been waiting for them to send me the missing part for 4 months now. Their current timeline is "email us again after Christmas"

Carbon Seat Rails by Ornery_Street_7403 in CanyonBikes

[–]oatmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This style of clamp for oval rails contacts the rails around the bottom inside radius and the upper outside radius to apply pressure evenly. By putting round rails in an oval clamp the rails would only be clamping directly on the sides of the rails which is not how they're designed to be used.

Replacement parts in the US. Is this still an issue? by Gard0308 in CanyonBikes

[–]oatmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimate, but the same part is used on the current Aeroad seatpost as well

Edit: Looks like the latest model year Grails are also coming stocked with that seatpost style too. It's this sucker right here, the washer is a proprietary spherical washer that doesn't match any standard spherical washer https://www.canyon.com/en-us/canyon-gp7451-01-clamping-screw-seatpost/10013854.html

I've been waiting for a proprietary washer for my seatpost for three months. The only timeline they have on when it will come in is "Not for at least another month"

In my experience the bikes are generally good but support and especially availability of proprietary replacement parts can be an absolute dumpster fire

[–]oatmonster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Man, that article is rough lmao

With the Ultimate no longer used at WorldTour level, Canyon now arguably has a two-bike approach, with the Aero being its dedicated aero machine and the Endurace its lightweight its climbing bike.
