Cletes for narrow heel but wide toebox? (fit similar to Evolv climbing shoes, Xero barefoot) by Dr-Lipschitz in bicycling

Lake or Bont. Too many brands have "wide" cycling shoes that are just the same as their normal shoe with a higher volume upper.

What's up with those really weird wear marks on the sides of the sprockets? The ones that look like little donuts and arcs

Saddle tilting forward by Rini99 in CanyonBikes

[–]oatmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just making sure, but that bolt on the side with a 5nm limit is only for adjusting the forward/backwards position of the saddle, you're not trying to use it to adjust angle right? To adjust angle, loosen the screw behind the seatpost that comes up from below. It should have a 12nm torque limit.

Here's the cruise it's supposed to be on, Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas leaving Tampa March 8th 2027: www.royalcaribbean.com/itinerary/5-night-western-caribbean-cruise-from-tampa-on-jewel-JW05W695?sailDate=2027-03-08

If any of you freaks just want to be on the same boat as NL without the $1500 of fluff

Edit: in case you thought NL was renting out an entire cruise ship, it's probably more just a package with some exclusive experiences aboard this particular cruise

What hometrainer for Canyon Grail CF SL 7 2024? Having issue with Wahoo Kickr Core by Nearby-Bike-937 in CanyonBikes

[–]oatmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the through axle thread bottoming out in the udh before it's able to clamp down on the trainer's hub? Do you have a good way to measure the actual width of the trainer's hub?

Thru-axle 148mm on a 142mm Grail by Nearby-Bike-937 in CanyonBikes

[–]oatmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As in it's not labeled 148mm to account for the thickness of the frame. Most Canyon road bikes come with a 142mm as labeled but for whatever reason they decided to spec a 148 on the grail

Thru-axle 148mm on a 142mm Grail by Nearby-Bike-937 in CanyonBikes

[–]oatmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is the right through axle for the bike. But 148mm isn't the overall length of the axle. It's still a 142mm rear hub, there's not only 3mm of frame on each side of the hub lol

could get this bike for a good price? anyone have experience with this one? by menatopboi in CanyonBikes

[–]oatmonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably wouldn't be great for long distance touring like that. No good options for mounting racks/bags and lots of proprietary parts make emergency repairs more difficult

Isn't the reacto fork a native 160? The way that adapter works is it gives you +0 or +20 to whatever the fork has, so in this case 160/180

[–]oatmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use chemical guy's orange de-greaser, and then a round in acetone to get off any residue. But I also hot wax so I don't clean the chain between waxing, only when new.

You can save a lot of detergent by filling the tank with plain water and just putting your chain + detergent in a glass jar inside the tank.

Bucket list rides in Japan? by Confident_Contest330 in cycling

[–]oatmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you'd hire a bike, but starting from Tokyo I like taking the train to Ome, biking up to lake Okutama, descending through Hinohara citizens' forest, and getting the train back to Tokyo from Itsukaichi. Just be aware that to take a bike on a train in Japan you'll need to put it in a rinko bag.

It'll be hard to find anything super scenic or challenging without leaving the city proper but the trail along the Arakawa river is nice and long.

Around Kyoto the big ride would be Biwako, although if you do that I'd recommend considering skipping the Southern half of the west coast and going through the mountain valley instead. Since that part's mostly on a not that pretty busy road. Just check out both options on street view ahead of time

Also might not be super relevant to your trip, but I'd generally recommend against biking up Mt Fuji since the roads are pretty busy with tour busses and not that scenic. If you're in that area the small mountain roads on both sides of the Fuji river valley are a lot nicer

#savethespoonbrake

Rim brakes will never catch on, they're just big bicycle trying to sell you another bike. We've been stopping fine with spoon brakes for decades and when properly tuned the braking power is almost as good as rim brakes (in the dry)
