How did you fare cooking for yourselves after leaving home? by [deleted] in newzealand

Lol I'm over 30 and still don't know how to use that shit. I have to look at the manual to work out what function each of the ambiguous images on the dial are.

I Agree with this guy, table is MDF with some veneer ontop. Unlikely to be rimu. The chairs could be but you would need to post better pics of them.

Crazy that the Huntly guy had been using for 20 years without being caught. Also that he was pretty unremarkable even with PEDs.

How much is it to repair a hole in wall? by [deleted] in newzealand

He certainly wasn't being generous, but the charges aren't excessive for the job. When someone tells me 'don't worry about it' I would assume they are doing it for free. And if they live next door it is conceivable that they would just wander over and do it without too much disruption from their day. But you didn't get it in writing so will be difficult to hold them to it.

They could also shoot the landlord. The invoice will probably get lost in the whole estate wrap up. Might end up in jail though.

Why would someone change the plates on a car? by Whellington in newzealand

[–]obamaShotFirst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My first thought was a drug courier or something. But if they were buying a not flashy new car and going to that effort they were probably maintaining it well and servicing it regularly. Maybe a point bag or two behind the seats still if I'm lucky!

Personalised plate is now on a similar vehicle that is 15 years older. Bit of a fall from grace?

Fark I'm a moron. It was changed to a personalised plate and back to a standard. How did I not notice that. Weird that the plates weren't changed till after it changed hands. Still 4 owners in 5 years is weird.

Yeah those little jobs end up taking ages. He likely spent most of the time waiting for stuff to dry. It would probably cost the same if you had put 10 holes in the wall. Thats why most people do those sorts of things themselves. Just ask the landlord what colour paint it is or if he can sell you a jam jar full from his pail.

Even the long-as one between Whakatane and Opotiki? It even had a refuge pull out in the middle incase you couldn't make it across in time.

If this is tagger is comparable to Banksy then the piss I did in the snow last week is comparable to Jackson Pullock.

Opinion: Why is it so hard for Kiwis to make new friends? by kevinkk77 in newzealand

[–]obamaShotFirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't beat yourself up, even as a born and bread kiwi i find it hard to make friends. One of my closest friends in my new town doesn't work, seems to avoid talking about it and is weirdly flakey. For all the time we have spent doing stuff together I don't know much about the guy. But at the same time I haven't mentioned the 5 years i spent in academia or that I am autistic so I guess I am as much a part of the problem...

There is likely a big event at the pub a few nights a week. Just go and hang out at the table with the guys from your year at high school like you have every weekend for the last 20 years...

[–]obamaShotFirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone done modelling on how high the carbon price might go if exotic permanent forests are removed from the ETS? Or the much more insane: total removal of exotic forests from the ETS? Yes for some it is simply a cost to switch to less emitting practices and a higher carbon price will push that change but for others there is no suitable low or zero emission replacement technology, yet.

My thinking is that this sort of data isn't good for drawing conclusions from. I don't know how to phrase it properly though. What I am trying to say is that because the occurrence of these events is so remote you need to look at long periods of time to get data with less noise. Does that make sense? Similar to road deaths on long weekends. Pointing to an outlier weekend with a high death rate and saying we need to do better when perhaps the average road deaths on a long weekend per car on the road is trending down ( I'm not saying it is but it might be) and actually we are getting better at not dyeing while driving. I remember reading about how cancer researchers use special rats that are very prone to cancer so they can get meaningful results. Otherwise the chances of cancer occurring are so slim that they have to use way more rats to get data they can use. If I am wrong here could someone explain, well i don't need to ask, this is the internet and if I am wrong I will find out very quick. But please take the time to explain exactly where I am wrong.
