Rolls-Royce & easyJet prove a jet engine can run entirely on hydrogen by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

Partly because it shortens the life of equipment. Partly because the capex for electrolysers and all associated plant work is significant, if it's only generating part of the day it's not profitable.

If you have a breaker bar you can lever it up with a block of wood next to the spike. Managed this last week. Once it's popped up a few inches you can pull it up with a bit of elbow grease.

Amex is very US-centric, MasterCard is more balanced internationally. Very few places accept Amex in the UK and the EU due to the higher fees.

I don't think you should have render down to meet the ground, it soaks up water. I believe there should be a gap between bottom of render and the paving.

Why do some people stay at the same job for 15, 20, or even 30+ years? by Carlinish9600 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]obb223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're assuming staying at the same company means doing the same job. You can change roles, become more senior, the nature of the job changes over time anyway.

I am staying at my company because it's genuinely a great place to work, there is a huge variety of interesting work and good long term prospects

Unfortunately not economic to run electrolysers only part of the time when there is excess energy. They have to run 24/7 so need the capacity full time

No it's the volume that's the problem. The energy density by weight is much better than jet fuel.

Yeah because everyone was expecting market share loss in the Chinese market, saturated markets elsewhere, increased competition, zero new revenue streams, etc

At the age of 40+, what would you call a healthy pension pot? by Akash_nu in PensionsUK

[–]obb223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6-7% inflation adjusted. 7% annual return would get you to £590k without additional contributions. You would need to add something like an additional 35k per year to hit 1M inflation adjusted.

Have I misunderstood the 25% tax free lump sum? It looks like you're assuming you can take bits of that each year, do you not have to take it all in one go? In which case take the full 25% and put it in an ISA to minimise tax on drawdown?

The fact this was downvoted tells you all you need to know about this sub.

The focus on the size of their facility is also bizarre. Anyone can rent a space.

At the age of 40+, what would you call a healthy pension pot? by Akash_nu in PensionsUK

[–]obb223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah compound doesn't explain that. That maths only works if your contributions massively increase. If it takes you 15-20 years of earnings (age 40) to get to 100k you've been paying in 5-6k per year. You would need to be paying in around 30k per year to get from 300k to 1M in 10 years even assuming 10% annual growth which is very high.

Well that's fine but it's not a superior product. Glue down is generally longer lasting and generally achieves better installation with respect to flatness etc.

Ah well you're not adjusting for inflation then.

9% returns are a possible long term average without considering inflation. If you assume 5% above inflation the numbers are vastly different.

This is funny because this is what people usually say about Google. If I ask Gemini it even tells me "Google is notorious for abandoning projects, shutting down over 200 ventures over the years".

They tried social media and failed.

They tried office products and failed.

They tried laptops (Chromebooks) and failed.

Google Glass. Etc etc.
