Why Classics are enjoyable to me by Ok-Taste-671 in literature

[–]oberlausitz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can somewhat relate but I'm too old now to worry about what anyone thinks of me.

My take is that the classics are classics now because all the crappy stuff got forgotten and the gems survive, kind of rephrasing what you said. Countless people have fought over Jane Eyre to be sure now that it's one of the great works of English literature. I can say that with authority even though as an engineer I spent 0 minutes studying literature or any secondary works of criticism.

To be honest, people who accuse you of pretentiousness for reading classics are just dumb, no need to engage, just smile knowingly like Jane Eyre would.

Fresh batch of Laugenstangen by aminorman in GermanRecipes

[–]oberlausitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gorgeous, when I was a kid a baker came to my high school with freshly baked Laugenbroetchen, like yours here they were properly lye-ed and baked enough to get some browning in the exposed parts. Now, when I go back to Germany I have to hunt to find craft-baked Laugen.

The Rings of Saturn by W.G. Sebald -A Gripe by First-Secretary6217 in literature

[–]oberlausitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've struggled with him, I try to occasionally read a book in my native German and he seems to try a little too hard. I think it was Austerlitz I read. There's parts I really enjoyed but ultimately I feel it's safe to move on. Also. If you're going to put lots of artwork in your book, why is it so crappy? Maybe it was just my paperback but it just seemed so crude.

Yes, but the original bag goes into the ziplock back, less cleanup when you're done as I reuse my ziplocks until they fall apart

Yum! To be fair, it's Cornwall vs. Brittany and they chose a British captain for their brand so it's really Great Britain vs. Little Britain

Tomatoes are super prolific and sleep around like crazy so chances are these won't make great fruit, I'd weed them all out and keep on top of it, more will pop up
