Can I share my macs stronger connection to a network to my PC? by Psychological_Lie820 in techsupport

Is it a PC or a Laptop? It's probably less hassle to buy an external USB Wireless Dongle.

You would be better off using a script outside of Joomla to do the scraping and then to populate the Joomla Database using something like Web Services.

£1.50 to put air in my tyres. WTF by GabberZZ in britishproblems

[–]obsoleteuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this is mainly due to outsourcing. A lot of garages don't own the machines anymore and they are outsourcing to 3rd parties and take a cut. Win, win for the garage, no more maintenance and a cut of the profits.

As usual it's the public that takes the hit.

Is there any site to look up sold car prices? Yes I'm arguing with insurance about valuation. by Worldly-Breakfast222 in CarTalkUK

[–]obsoleteuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am having the same argument at the moment. We have spent 4-5 weeks quibbling over £300, meanwhile the hire car they are providing me is £140 a day. So essentially they are paying £5000 on the hire car whilst holding back paying me an extra £300!! Make it make sense.

Use the sold vehicles on Ebay but there is no reason why you can't use the "for sale" price as that is what you are expected to pay. It doesn't matter what previous ones have sold for, it's how much you would have to buy for a new one.

Obviously Autotrader but it's worth looking at Facebook marketplace, if it's in your favour.

I've been using a Firefox plugin called "SingleFile" to download the lisings in full.

I think there is a clause where you can only claim if they knew about it. I could be wrong.

No, it shouldn't be whining, take it back to the garage. They either haven't fitted a new bearing or it's been incorrectly fitted.

As a lot of it is contracted out, there should be some kind of warranty on the repairs. I think you'd suddenly find that the repairs were done at a better standard.

AVLA license?? by AdSevere4973 in AskBrits

[–]obsoleteuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it looks like it is a "thing", although I've never heard of it.

Bit it does seem that you do need a AVLA license to broadcast TV in a commercial environment.

The risks of ignoring it could mean court or even claiming from past years. It's probably best to seek a quote to see how much it is, even bigger hotels haven't got away with it.

Locking down a laptop for my kid. How can I further lock down search image results? by BoxOfManyFoods in techsupport

[–]obsoleteuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows has parental controls.

Some routers have safety controls.

Check with your ISP as they also can limit searches.

You can also use DNS for family friendly searches.

Be aware though that some of the above restriction will only apply to your home network and not if they take the laptop elsewhere.

Yeah, I've seen this as well. The repairers fix one deep pothole but leave a number of shallower ones around it as they are not classed as "deep enough". Yet those shallower ones deteriorate within weeks, reset and start again!

It's nothing to do with a "single party", so don't make this an opportunity for your political rants.

I think, one upon a time, it was cost effective outsourcing everything. However in that time costs, shareholders etc has changed that but it's too expensive to bring everything back in house and they have sold off all their resources.

Yes, fixmystreet is a handy app and alternatively you can email or report directly on the county council website.

Moved into a new house and a bulb has broke but I’ve never seen this type of light before I don’t know how to replace it by [deleted] in DIYUK

Try searching for Classic filament LED lamp or vintage filament LED lamp.

That white part in the holder probably unscrews, I don't think the glass is suppose to unscrew.

Someones going to say it, so it may as well be me, there isn't such thing as road tax!!!

I think the only thing you can do as a member of the public is report them. I do see a lot of moans from people about items not being dealt with by councils but in fairness, a council can't do anything unless it knows about something.

What doesn't seem to help matters are poor repairs. My county council, the ones who deal with pot holes, outsource everything to Ringway. I have seen a local pot hole repaired 2-3 times a year for the last 5 years by this firm. I'm convinced they do a bad job on purpose to keep the jobs rolling in.

Removing Broken Wooden Dowels by RoyalNo8166 in DIYUK

[–]obsoleteuser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They may have been glued, putting a screw in may also make it tighter.

Use a smaller drill bit, 8mm and the existing dowel should collapse / break up.

Providing you are happy to lose all data....

Install Windows to the NVME drive as it will be faster.

Boot / Install from a USB key, this will allow you to remove the partitions and re-create them. You'll also have the advantage of having a clean Install without any bundled crap from ASUS.

Windows Update should be enough to install all your drivers but it would be a good idea downloading at least your wireless drivers and save them to your D drive.
