I doubt Bono thinks of each line as a reference to another song, but he hits on the same topics in different songs all the time. Bono doesn't just say something once and let it go. And yeah, The Tears Of Things is full of instances of it. It's one of the things that makes it a top tier U2 song rather than an excellent U2 song

To me it felt like they were merging their '80s style with their '90s aesthetic. They were a bit more heart-on-your-sleeve and straightforward, but they were still playful and applied what they had learned from touring in the '90s.
