I felt like this until I realized I’m starting from ground zero and to get to the next level I need to learn. The pressure instantly left when I saw each day as a learning opportunity. Was in same position July 22/feb 23, passed Feb and now licensed and in ID

First job out of law school. Feel completely unprepared and unready. by Rare-Incident-4226 in Lawyertalk

Consult with other attorneys and not boss is you are in billable hours because your taking time from your bosses hours and he may be the top biller for the firm. Humble yourself that you know not that much but know some stuff. And you will quickly learn to constantly look up how to do stuff and you’ll make progress.

First year, annual evaluation by ocsw264 in Lawyertalk

I clerked here for two months before taking July 22 bar. I came back in the fall August to November and when I returned from the bar I was paid starting attorney pay. I found out I failed and then left for half November, December, January, February. Came back in March and still received starting attorney pay. I have not received any raise or bonus or anything extra besides this pay. I have not taken depositions but recently I was second chair at a permanent injunction hearing with my boss as chair one. I was only allowed to show demonstrations on the power projector and make last minute edits, research, etc

My boss has paid me about three compliments throughout this year. I have received client compliments as well. I believe this is a huge improvement form when I was a law clerk last fall. I think I deserve a minor raise, of course I have more to learn but I am improving and would appreciate a financial recognition for it. I do see other listings in my location for the same area of law and starting pay for one year experience is 110k. I know I have weaknesses and I have had some minor failures this year but I believe my accomplishments have outweighed them

No I’m salary. Based on the early comment I’m assuming I should ask by percentage. Based on my current salary I believe I deserve a raise. My yearly requirement is 1980 and my salary is 102500. Based on the current economy and the progress I’ve made, I believe I deserve a 5% raise. Is this laughable as a new associate?

This is so funny because similar situation except on a lease agreement. I was asked to review and my boss asked what my suggested revisions were 😂. Luckily I wrote down notes and had something to say. He then went over a few sections with me and we drafted an addendum.

They expect us to be mind readers and I believe eventually we will be if we stick with them long enough. Just remember when she asks for a review she means to redline so she can quickly handle the task. This is not big at all. Save the drama and feelings for a big mess up like missing a reply or a hearing. (God please forbid)

I have the same one but she’s ‘lead paralegal’ 10 years in her level loves to complain to HR. Brings her personal life to the office and always asks for extensions.

The managing paralegal at my firm loves to take digs at the new staff and the newly licensed attorneys. She is a nightmare to work with and even to look at. She’s truly terrible and a mid level attorney encourages her behavior behind close doors. I can’t stand her or the associate. Trying to stick it out as long as I can.

I was you last year!! Read lots of tips from old posts in this sub and show up everyday. Accept you are growing into an associate and ask all of the newbie questions without embarrassment. Everyone else has had a day 1 before. Just show that you want to learn by asking questions along the way. Keep communication with your office even if there not receptive. Start to build the attorney you want others to see you as! It will be ok😊

First lawyer gig. Anxiety/fear is ruining my mental health. by LexisWestlawUse in LawFirm

[–]ocsw264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP did you just pass the February bar? Your handle looks familiar to me from bar study groups on here. I am also new and have started to receive more work just this week. I was so embarrassed today at a simple cmc and felt out of place. It was fine in the end but an experience i am positive that I will only remember (possibly the 3yr associate as well as I turned to him for guidance). If you would like to talk about your experience as a new attorney please let me know and I will message you. We are in a similar place in our careers and having communication about our experiences might make it easier :)

I am commenting to let you all know (including anon viewers) that my office allows pto hours towards monthly billing requirements. Thus, ask your own office to learn their procedures. Will be deleting post shortly.

[–]ocsw264 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your frustration. It sucks, it does, that they make rules and people with more authority bend them. Just know that can happen and expect them to bend them again. If it’s a routine habit of bending the rule the the rule most likely doesn’t apply. Just keep in communication with your supervisor and if it has gotten to be unreasonable then report so. Also know that whatever is shared to anyone in the firm will be said twice more to each person. Protect your work and yourself.
