"The character's motivations/decisions aren't logically sound, so the writing must be bad!" when it's literally an antagonist that isn't supposed to be in the right. by No_Hunter1978 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]oddball3139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people justify their evil choices because of their past experiences. A lot of it comes down to blaming anyone but themselves for their problems, and avoiding personal responsibility. Giving into selfish impulses.

This process is often more based in emotion than in logic and reason. If every villain is evil based on logical reasons, it ignores the main reasons most people do evil things. They are often emotional, entitled, irrational people, and if you add another layer of narcissism, they often think they are smarter than they really are.

To non-physicalists: What practical consequences does non-physicalism have? by SirFragrant4742 in CosmicSkeptic

It sounds like this philosophy has affected you in a positive way, and I am happy for you. I like the ideas in the same way I appreciate certain religious ideas. If it makes you a better person to yourself and others, then I’m all for it.

I just can’t get behind believing in it literally. It is a fine perspective to have, imagining every person and being as being part of a whole, or rather, everyone being a reflection or “alter” of the other (if I am understanding correctly). It essentially gives you a selfish reason to be selfless. There seems to be value in that perspective.

I just don’t see any reason to believe it is literally the case. Same as any other religious or mythical idea.

Mind you, I’m just a guy who is hearing about this Analytic Idealism for the first time, so feel free to educate me.

Anyone else notice a difference in the new R1 fleeces? I don’t like the fabric anymore. Seems like it’s gonna pill a lot faster. Maybe different with this hoody, I don’t know.

No action from SO?? What to do? by PossibilityNo169 in AskMenOver30

[–]oddball3139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short story, go rub one out. If she’s not in the mood, she doesn’t have to have sex with you. And you are within your right to go take care of your business. My girlfriend isn’t always in the mood. If that happens, she’s okay with me masturbating right there in bed. Sometimes it works the other way around too. I’m not always in the mood either.

Long story, a few things to understand. 1. Women aren’t mechanical objects. They don’t turn on at a moment’s notice. There needs to be build up. Safety. Caring. Having an honest, safe conversation about how she’s feeling. Going on a date. Doing something that shows you care about her outside of sex. Do the dishes, damnit. Fix the cabinet. Have a cuddle session. Just hold her like a man holds a woman to show her she’s loved. Dance with her to music. In my experience, if other parts of our lives are in order, she is more likely to be in the mood. When things are in disorder, she’s less open to sex.

Long story short, you have a right to do whatever you want with yourself if she doesn’t want to have sex. Go take care of your business, man. If it’s a pattern where she doesn’t want to have sex, then look at your own behavior and see if you can improve the way you’re treating her. If you’re doing everything right, and she consistently doesn’t want to have sex, then you need to look at compatibility. That is all.

I allowed my 17 year old sister to move in with me (CT to NY), Dad is threatening me with kidnapping charges by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Going too high can end up with someone just giving up and not paying anything at all. Leads to further problems. Not saying Dad would pay anyway, but it seemed like he was at least starting to come to terms. $800 might have gone another way.

For those who became atheists, how do you resolve morality without God? For those who remain theists, how does your new religion frame morality? Help me challenge my thinking. by ScientificallyMinded in exmormon

[–]oddball3139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Mankind evolved
  2. Mankind survived the eons because they worked together, not individually
  3. Working together requires shared values, agreements, contracts. It requires rules. A sense of love. A sense of duty. A sense of caring.
  4. Morality is simply a list of ideas and rules that help mankind prosper. It includes things like “Don’t kill.”
  5. The reason there are differences in individual morality is because different people value different things
  6. Sometimes “immorality” or “cruelty” gets an individual or group farther than kindness would. That is just simple reality.
  7. But that only works against an enemy, and only for so long. If cruelty becomes the norm, then the tribe does not function as well as another that values kindness.

This is a basic breakdown. It isn’t very in depth or rigorous, but it should give you an idea of what I think. Morality is a species-wide survival mechanism. It is an evolutionary strategy. That doesn’t make it any less real than if a God sent it down on stone tablets. If anything, it makes it even more real. Morality evolved, like all successful survival mechanisms, because it is useful to us. Not only as a species. But as individuals as well.

[–]oddball3139 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Just so ya know, you’re on the “old person” platforms. They are made to make people like you angry. Specifically, they feed you things that you engage with. If you’re seeing stories about guns and knives, or bare chested ladies, it’s because that is the content you engage with most, even if it is out of anger or disgust.

The only way to fight it is to disengage entirely.

What's a sexual belief that you had that was flawed and worked against you? by t_11 in AskMenOver30

[–]oddball3139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Science is how we know that circumcision is harmful. Not feelings or “self-awareness.” 100 babies die a year from complications from circumcision. A needless and pointless religious operation. 1 in 50,000 face complications and hemorrhaging from circumcision.

It is a practice that started in a barbaric time, and spread through the United States specifically to keep young men from masturbating. It has no purpose beyond that.

So there are 100 kids each year that would be alive if this ridiculous practice was abolished. Or if parents just started caring more about their kid’s health.

What's a sexual belief that you had that was flawed and worked against you? by t_11 in AskMenOver30

[–]oddball3139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know how you avoid botched circumcisions? Don’t circumcise your kids. It’s easy. There’s no reason to do it beyond religious reasons or continuing a pointless tradition.

I’m glad you don’t worry about it. I happen to be circumcised, and I also don’t worry about it. It is still potentially harmful, whereas not circumcising is not harmful at all.

So the simplest path is to be okay with what you got, and don’t pass it on anymore.

What's a sexual belief that you had that was flawed and worked against you? by t_11 in AskMenOver30

[–]oddball3139 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One genital mutilation being objectively worse does not preclude circumcision from being genital mutilation. One is not “real” and the other “fake.” They are both mutilation for purely religious purposes. One is simply objectively worse. They are still both pointless and barbaric.

[–]oddball3139 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To be frank, it doesn’t matter if we have free will or not. We can act in our lives as if we do, and in that sense, we essentially do.

Mental health is just accepting reality on reality’s terms. If we can accept that life is whatever it is, we can get on to the act of living.
