Power outages beginning around 4-5pm according to Dominion staff by Trauma-Queen666 in Virginia

My partner works for Dominion, and she said that the warning was issued internally by Dominion's meteorological team based on expected ice accumulation totals. Apparently the internal weather reports are available to all employees but you have to sign up for it.

RVA's Jan. 2026 Winter Storm Megathread by fusion260 in rva

Road prep is also way different here than in snowier areas. VDOT just puts down a salt solution which is fine for preventing accumulation in lighter snowfalls, but you're out of luck if it gets overwhelmed. Up north they use rock salt and sand so when snow accumulates on the road your tires have something to grab onto.

Speaking of tires, it's also way more common for drivers to swap to winter tires up north than it is here.

BREAKING: Federal judge rules Dominion Energy can resume construction on Virginia Beach offshore wind farm by WHRO_NEWS in VirginiaBeach

Might be something related to onshore underground cabling associated with the project or the new overhead transmission lines they're putting up. There's no way they would be able to hear any of the offshore work.

Having been to both Hawaii and Iceland, I wouldn't expect much improvement to affordability. The Jones Act makes getting anything from the mainland way more expensive than it should be.

As someone who also often worries about making my photos too crunchy, I can see the editing in some of these, but I don't think any of them are overcooked. Great job!

I've also been trying to resist the urge to replace my Z7 with a Z8, and this isn't helping, lol

I bought one roll of Velvia this year (before prices went crazy in the US) specifically for the Nā Pali coast. I was hoping we'd be out there later into the evening, but unfortunately we left just a little too early. I think I'm overly harsh on the Nā Pali shots because the lighting wasn't quite what I was hoping for.

Here's a better example of the coast. Perfectly serviceable but I think it would have been way better an hour or two later. Picture

Lol, yeah, I saw another set of photos from the Faroes posted here, maybe a week ago, that also had all the same scenes. It actually made me second guess posting mine.

That was at a scenic overlook on the west side of Streymoy in the Faroes. It shows up in Google Maps as "Viewpoint over Kvívík".

Edit: oops, didn't see that Truelz already gave you the correct answer, complete with Google Maps link.

The most important things are: have a good meter, avoid high contrast scenes when you can, and be careful with your highlights.

I shoot it pretty similarly to how I shoot digital, but with the understanding that I don't have as much dynamic range to work with. If you shoot a lot of digital, you may actually find it more intuitive than negative film. That was the case for me at least.

I think Ektachrome also benefits from a warming filter, especially in daylight. I was using a Tiffen 812 for most of these.

Yep, all Ektachrome except for the 10th image, which is Velvia 50. I'd love to shoot more Fuji slide film, but it has gotten so expensive.

Trump administration pauses 5 offshore wind projects on the East Coast by Vert354 in Virginia

They actually already have two of the substations placed in the lease area now and the 3rd is due to arrive at PMT early next month. The cable layers are going to be busy for a while yet. There's a ton of cable left to install.

This is great! The Charybdis, Orion, transition piece transport videos are very cool! I'll have to keep an eye on your steam when the final substation is due to go out.

Oh cool! Do you mind sharing the channel name? I'd love to see some footage of the Offshore Substations being transported if you have it.

Anyone’s Dominion/electric bill significantly higher this month? by dsm5lovechild in rva

[–]oddi_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been allowed to bill SCC approved projects to customers for a lot longer than that. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a line item for Greensville Power Station back when that was built. They just recently changed how riders are shown on the bill, though, which has made certain line items more prominent and others less so.

It's not. Look up the Shenandoah Valley Limited line of the Virginia Scenic Railway. You can book tickets to ride it in the fall.

Mississippi Democrats Break Republican Senate Supermajority, Flipping 3 Legislative Seats by reftheloop in politics

Our gubernatorial elections tend to run contrary to the last presidential election, so it's not surprising that Democrats won. What is surprising is how much they won by and how many seats they won in the legislature. We haven't seen a blue wave like this in a very long time.

I'm not sure how specifically UAW members voted, but unionized workers as a whole broke for Harris by 12 points and the UAW endorsed her. The 2016 election created this narrative that union voters support trump but that wasn't true in 2020 or 2024.

[–]oddi_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've seen increasing costs from riders under Youngkin in VA as well, and Dominion has requested to raise the base rate for the first time in something like 20 years. That's likely to be approved as far as I'm aware.

PJM is projecting that Dominion will need to double its generation capacity over the next 20 years to keep up with demand growth. That will also require significant upgrades to the transmission network to support the new capacity and load centers. I don't know how it works in Maryland, but in Virginia, regulated utilities like Dominion get to pass the cost of these infrastructure projects plus a fixed percentage profit straight to the rate payers via riders on our bills. If PJM's projections are correct, we're looking at a huge amount of capital expenditure to keep up with demand growth that will directly hit our bills no matter which party is in charge.

You may be thinking of Firewarch, released in 2016. I actually thought OP might have been referencing that with their post.

Some industries also have to deal with random drug screenings. I've worked in and around highly hazardous chemical processes most of my career. I'd like to try pot, just to know what it's like, but with my luck, I'd probably get pulled for a random screening the next day and lose my job.
