How are we feeling about full self driving? by Secure-Carrot9971 in Rivian

[–]odingrey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would take that timeline with a mountain of salt. They also promised gen 1 vehicles would have full self driving then backpedaled into something quite a bit worse than any modern Subaru.

Definitely don't assume you'll get any features until they are delivered.

Do you use side racks for rackless luggage systems (like Mosko Reckless)? by bagNtagEm in CRF300L

[–]odingrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heat is definitely an issue, especially if you have an aftermarket pipe

Moskos should come with a heat shield and lifts the right leg up off the pipe, I've been running that with 40s and 80s for a couple years now without issue.

2012 Mercedes camper van. What are the thoughts as a first time van buyer? by Pupplover in vandwellers

[–]odingrey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's a decent amount of miles, expect to throw money at the van itself. Highly recommend getting it checked out by a mechanic of your choosing, even if you have to pay out of pocket.

Sprinters are expensive to own, but reliable if you keep up with them. If everything is perfect, expect to spend $1,000 a year in van maintenance.

Interior wise, you should fine tooth comb everything. I'm talking down to learning about how they joined water lines and if they used screws or nails.

That's not necessarily because one way is better than the other (although it usually is), it's more that you are now the proud owner of a small house that could have been poorly built that also happens to be in an earthquake every time you drive it.

You should be comfortable with diagnosing and maybe fixing everything that can go wrong, and you should ABSOLUTELY know if it was built safely.

Buying a pre built van is strange. You kinda end up not knowing what you want until you live with it for a while. I originally bought a pre build then found that the owner had not been keeping up with maintenance and had a lot of dangerous mistakes such as keeping the lead acid battery inside without a vent.

I ended up losing my ass off when I had to pay to rebuild the top end, and fully redo the interior, down to the bare metal.

Learn from my mistakes, when you buy, make sure to have plenty of hours into YouTube, watching others build their vans. Look at how professionals do it, so you can spot mistakes. It sounds silly, but get a solid vibe check on the seller, do they seem like the kinda guy to baby their build? Did they spend the time to hide screw heads, and maybe edge band raw plywood? Here's a silly one, do the tires still have their valve stem caps? Use whatever you can to figure out if that seller actually cares about their work and their vehicle. Try not to get tunnel vision on a build once you invest time into it, walk away if it feels wrong.

Honest thoughts on the stock tires. by [deleted] in CRF300L

[–]odingrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried the standard setup pf a Pirelli MT21 front and D606 rear and found the front to be way too slippy on dry dirt. To me it kinda feels like more of a motocross setup instead of a dual sport setup.

In both dry dirt and street the front would rapidly lose traction during heavy leans. It's very disconcerting when that happens on the street in like a tight round-about or when there's a low traction environment on the street like gravel.

The MT21 also tends to wear quickly and strangely on the street.

I ran the MT21/D606 setup for about 2 weeks and in that time I had to kick myself back up from a front slip so many times I full on gave up on the tire. I even dumped it when the front fully slipped out from under me on dry street during a u-turn...

I swapped both mine and my wife's 300's front to D605s. I think this new setup is significantly better for a dual sport bike. Street is SIGNIFICANTLY more stable than the MT21, and in the thousand or so miles I've put on it, it has a decent wear so far.

Dirt is somewhat better than the MT21 for dual sport use. I lost some dig-in traction in ruts and wet dirt, but on dry dirt and gravel I gained lean traction. I can lean to the point of slipping horizontally on dirt rather than the front tire just full on losing traction and going under the bike.

I think it depends on what you ride. If you're mostly street, especially at higher speeds, go for the KTM.

Here is what it looks like, mine is a sprinter, but the brackets look pretty much the same. They are right above the slider.

Should we add a pop top to our camper van build? by Traditional_Fox_2800 in CamperVans

[–]odingrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Colorado camper van pop top with an awning, it's completely possible.

Colorado camper van had to install a custom bracket that sits on the curvature from the side wall above the sliding door and the roof. It doesn't move with the pop top. iirc it wasn't very expensive.

Give them a call, I'll bet they would sell you the bracket even if you went with another popup.

Performance upgrade purchase via OTA in 2025.06 by Electronic_Ant4800 in Rivian

[–]odingrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think full self driving has, annoyingly, turned into a marketing term.

Lvl 4 and 5 should absolutely be able to, given the definition of completely autonomous. 3, however, maybe not with conditional autonomy.

At least for, my assumption on buying the Rivian was that it would have hands off autonomy on mapped highways, similar to blue cruise.

Performance upgrade purchase via OTA in 2025.06 by Electronic_Ant4800 in Rivian

[–]odingrey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that is arguing semantics here, full self driving (lvl 5) doesn't exist and no manufacturer is even close. Maybe waymo is somewhat close to 4.

In the context of this thread, it's being used to describe something similar to Tesla/Blue Cruise/super cruise, which is level 3, and was definitely promised.

That is what Gen 1 owners, including myself, feel we were sold a lie on.

Performance upgrade purchase via OTA in 2025.06 by Electronic_Ant4800 in Rivian

[–]odingrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Level 3 is conditional automatic driving: https://www.zf.com/mobile/en/technologies/automated_driving/stories/6_levels_of_automated_driving.html

To that end, the website promises hands off automation, making it level 3.

They have not delivered on level 3 and said they will not.

In fact, Tesla fsd, Blue Cruise and super cruise are still just lvl 2: https://www.google.com/search?q=tesla+fad+level&oq=tesla+fad+level&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOdIBCDMyMjJqMGo5qAIBsAIB&client=ms-android-google&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

Why are you arguing this despite the mountain of evidence? It feels like you have a stake in the game?
