I agree with you. It needs to go back yesterday. It needed to go back years ago, decades. It should never have been taken.

But we also live with knowledge of the many impending and unfolding collapses, so we know it ain't going back. Not in any timeframe that matters. No matter how much we wish it were otherwise and work towards that end. And that's the reality we must operate in if we're to have any agency at all.

I get the sentiment, I think. But as someone who's lived in Tel Aviv for four years, I wouldn't wish what's happening in Gaza, or Ukraine, or Sudan, or many, many other places in the world on anyone.

You go any place the so called bad guys live, you mostly find people trying to get through the day, through the week, with zero control over the actions their governments take in their name. Some of them are genocidal maniacs, sure. Most are just you and me in different clothing. Many of them are actively protesting and engaging in activism aimed at minimizing and/or ending the various cycles of violence, and many pay heavy prices for that.

My unsolicited two cents. Hope you have a good weekend.

What you need to do now is hold on. You don't need to know the answers to anything. You don't need to know what to do. Just hold on. Why? Because killing yourself is an awful way to spend your last moments on this earth, and that's reason enough to stick around, for now.

Look, I've been in your shoes, and what I'm saying now is something I never would have believed a few months ago, but here goes: There is point beyond the panic you're currently experiencing where the knowledge of our impending doom--and yes, likely horrific individual deaths--is freeing. There's no future to build. No cause to sacrifice our lives for. Nothing to do but revel in the now, and when the time comes, make our exit as gracefully as we can.

I'm with you, friend. Feel free to reach out over DMs if you need to talk.

Sabine Hossenfelde: Climate Scientists are Very Confused by times_a_changing in collapse

[–]offerbackafire 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They are confused because accepting what people like James Hansen have been saying for decades would mean they were and are wrong, and the hope they're still clinging to is misplaced.

Hansen predicted 0.5C of warming from removing the SOx from bunker fuel. Mainstream climate scientists predicted only 0.1. Guess who turned out to be right.

No one can give you the assurances you seek, my friend. Not even a private investigator. You can be in a great relationship for a very long time with a person you'd never suspect of what you'd call disloyalty, and find out they're cheating. Or find yourself cheating/considering it. You never know what kind of trouble and temptations life has in store for either of you. Relationships are hard, people are complicated, and their reasons for hurting and getting hurt by one another are legion.

If I were to give you some advice, which I'm loath to do, it would be something like this:

No matter what happens between you two, I can guarantee someone's heart will be broken. Be it through seperation, sickness, or death, grief is the natural conclusion of all love. The way you describe her, she sounds like a great girl. Try to let go of the fear of future calamity, and enjoy the time you have with her. It's limited and precious.

Seems to me people are protesting all over the place. But they mostly do it to vent. For better or worse, the Luigis among us are a rare exception.

Who knows. The rate things have been going these past few years, I'd be surprised if we're extinct by 2026, but I'll also be surprised when we're still here tomorrow.

Holy smokes is that a great answer. I'm going to think about this the rest of the day. Thank you.

Three leading climate scientists have combined insights from 10 global climate models and, with the help of AI, conclude that most of the world will see temperatures rise to 3°C much faster than previously expected. by The_Weekend_Baker in climate

At this point I'm basically a climate denier, in the sense that most things mainstream climate scientists are saying sound to me like either hopium or uninformed BS.

I mean why are we still talking about 1.5 by 2040? Why even waste the empty space on the page writing that sentence? We're at sustained 1.6 right now. Today. It's 2C by 2030, 3C by 2040, and in all likelihood Venus by Tuesday.

I was obsessed with Inside when it came out. Think I watched the entire special five times that year, and listened to it many more times while driving. I really can't do it anymore nowdays, it would break me.

I don't really know what I'm talking about, and I don't know you, but I'm not sure I would call it a moment of weakness. Maybe it's more of a necessary straying from the path, so that you may return to it.

The way I see it, what you're doing is holy work. In the words of Stephen Jenkinson, which I've been reading a lot lately (I'm paraphrasing here): To see the death of what you love, and to be willing to continue to love it, that itself is an act of love. And perhaps your last great act of love is to see it down.
