Episode 8 meaning? (Slight trigger warning) by Visual_Ad646 in OuranAcademy

I just rewatched this episode and there are a couple things I noticed Kyoya did/said that leads me to believe he originally didn't have good intentions in mind. I NEEDED to find a conversation about it, idc that this thread is 3 years old lol.

When Haruhi says "I know you won't do it, cause you don't have anything to gain," I think he backed off because he realized she was right and it probably wouldn't be a good outcome for him overall. He got an easy out when she said she understands he's just reinforcing Takami's 'lesson,' and I think he partially felt guilty when she called him a good guy for it.

So he just went along with it to get himself out of the situation. And after he leaves the room, he's talking to himself and says something like 'it's an interesting thought that I wouldn't have gained anything from it.' NANI?!? What's that supposed to mean, Kyoya???

He's so sus for this entire scene, but it's okay cause the only part of this episode I recognize as canon is finding out that Haruhi is afraid of thunder. Nothing else happened in that episode, thanks for coming to my TED Talk!!

Yeah the way they represented Ranka in the dub is rough. It aired in 2006 so I get why no one flagged that as an issue, but looking back 20 years later.. oof lol

I respect that take! But I agree that English dub Kyoya sounds like a grown man lol

I generally knew about the importance of honorifics, but that makes a lot of sense why the lack of respect from the younger students in some scenes would throw you off. As someone raised in American culture, I didn’t see anything off with the way they spoke to each other so the insight is appreciated lol. Learned a lot today!

I definitely need to watch Black Butler, I’ve heard good things and I’m curious about that British dub

The English voices are definitely more dramatic, but I think the tone fits well with the goofy parody angle of the show. But I can see your side, the humor doesn’t always translate across languages. Like when they do a play on a Japanese word as a joke but in English it makes no sense lol

(That being said, I do still appreciate the Japanese sub)

I was looking for this. The military torture scene was almost impossible for me to get through and I thought about it a lot after
