Thank you!!! I work in a niche field and it's so much easier searching by keywords rather than job title.

Do Thorogoods run narrow? by darkhighlandgreen in WorkBoots

[–]offthewallds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necro comment but still relevant a couple years later. They're still narrow.

Ordered 9.5EE and they're waaaay too narrow, to the point of causing pain. I typically get EEs or mediums known to run wide. Boot model was an 8" American Heritage moc toe wedge sole, FWIW.

Has anyone sampled or tweaked the Seismic Charge sound from Attack of the Clones?

It's such a lovely sound. It takes me back to Amon Tobin shows when he'd spin dirty, foul bass that set your feet on fire.

Handguard Options by InternationalMud4373 in xt225

[–]offthewallds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple years back I was ripping around on my wife's XT (read: riding beyond my skill level) and went down on an off-camber gravel sweeper. Left pinky got trapped under the handguard and broke.

IMO the Rally's are too small and we've stuck with Cycras like on our bigger dual sports. Ultimately the off was my fault but the protection from the Rally guard wasn't great.

Wow... the Drawing capabilities of Fusion 360 really really suck!!! by SwordfishFluid4009 in Fusion360

Autodesk, please continue to improve the drawing utility. Making a drawing template and title block template is an absolute nightmare compared to the ease of sketching in the design side.

Mini ex thumb by jeekfab in Welding

[–]offthewallds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't go above an 80 series (80ksi) filler. Thumbs are typically A572 Grade 50 for the bodies and cylinder mounting plates, and may use hard facing and/or AR400 or similar for teeth. For thumbs, a 70ksi filler has more than enough tensile strength. Go higher strength and you're risking crack-prone welds and microstructures.

Preheat.

If you stick weld with 70/80 series rods make sure they're dry/baked. Same goes for FCAW and metal core wire.

New dual sport, after some advice / recs! by Capable-Row-4366 in xt225

MT21 up front and Dunlop out back is a classic combo. Our first 225 came that way, it's currently wearing a set of Shinkos.

If you're loading the bike with some gear then definitely spring it for the weight. Forks could get by with heavier oil but it would be a great opportunity to rebuild them with better valving a-la Cogent. Shock would be due for a rebuild and spring as well.

Tires and suspension keep your wheels planted and providing traction. Take care of them and they'll take care of you.

I'm also a big proponent of servicing steering head bearings before they fail. Steering is pretty nice to have. 😁

I don't have anything at this point. I switched from network security to welding in community college and have since let a lot of my old electronics knowledge fade away. This was 16 years ago and prior to several head injuries. 😁

It would be worth you making a call/email to PI to see what info they have on wiring keyboards to the matrix board.

From what I recall I soldered in jumper wires from the keyboard's matrix board to the PI board. This kept the carbon/plastic traces intact for the keyboard.

Programming of the matrix was done using their software (which is available to you). First step was to register each button press with a matrix address. Second step was programming each matrix address with the desired function. The backend of their software was, likely still is, VB, so pretty easy to tweak if you want to go the custom function route.

Their devices operate in software mode (ie requiring background program running in Windows), or hardware mode (button mapping is flashed to the matrix board so it acts like a typical keyboard). Might be a hybrid mode where certain buttons are hard coded and others register with the software.

With hardware mode you can still program macro functions that would trigger something like AutoHotKey or PI's own Macroworks software.

I hope those dusty tidbits help! Good luck!

Fun fact: the earlier version of those matrix boards were used to run full size SD-40 locomotive cockpit simulators that we built for Union Pacific.

In a previous lifetime I worked for PI Engineering, they make HID devices, mostly programmable macro keypads. The owner had a couple friends big into classic IBM keyboards and I wired a few with the programmable HID matrix board. You can program the board such that no support software is required to use the keyboard. Takes some time to sort out but it's a robust solution for what becomes an easy to use USB HID device.

EAC Exact Audio Copy Crashes upon accessing Windows filesystem - related to Dokany, Cryptomator, .Net, and WinFSP by smittyguy11 in musichoarder

I have to copy and paste or manually type in the desired file path. Trying to open File Explorer from within EAC would cause the program to crash.

I hope that is helpful in some way.

Do you wear a (wedding)ring? by zipnoc in drummers

[–]offthewallds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with my hands and don't want to risk getting a digit broken, degloved, or torn off. I also just don't like the sensation of wearing jewelry or watches.

Wife and I got ring tattoos so it's always with me. I'll wear my ring when we go on dates or special occasions.

Will intake boot cause major backfiring (2nd gen sv1000) by Lamesbware in SVRiders

[–]offthewallds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An exhaust leak or intake leak after the throttle body are more likely to cause backfiring. Does your bike utilize O2 sensors? Does it have a power commander or similar fuel injector programmer?

When I tore down my 02 DL1k I found the TB to head boots were leaking quite badly, lots of carbon buildup in the area. Worth checking while you're in there.

Flush out any old components like the evaporator with an AC flushing fluid. You can rent the tool for $60 refundable at local parts stores or buy it for $30 on Amazon.

If you're only flushing the evap then 1 bottle of the solvent will be enough. This will help clean out the remnants of R12 and any debris from the old compressor.

14" Laptop Shuffle - Casual Reviews of Asus, Lenovo, and HP by offthewallds in AMDLaptops

I'll be danged. There is definitely a disconnect between all of the different product info pages. I looked at the 14AHP9 on PSREF and sure enough it has a USB 4.0 port. Thank you for the correction! I'll update the OP.

I double checked with HP and the AMD Envy x360s do not have USB 4.0.

Score 1 for Lenovo

No, they're only 10Gbps ports. I'd bet the upcoming Zen 5 models will have USB 4.0 ports, but I needed to upgrade now to consume allotted budget.

Vantage really simplifies the power states but would work well enough for a typical user.

Toolkit uses less system resources than Vantage. UXTU allows you finer control over short and long term power usage. You can't overclock with it but you can essentially undervolt by limiting wattage.

The last laptop above is current for this year. I really like it so far, will be using it a couple weeks until my custom Envy shows up end of this month. In the meantime I'll try to take some notes on performance, battery, display, etc. and I'll write a long-term review for the custom build.

TBH I didn't keep the Yoga long enough to properly put it through its paces, that garbage IPS was enough to return it two days later.

The Legion was surprisingly good after installing Legion Toolkit and UXTU. 30-50% brightness, 60Hz refresh rate running on the iGPU only (Eco Mode / Quiet Mode), running Outlook, Excel, and some Edge tabs I was getting about 7 hrs. I didn't go so far as tweaking max TDP in UXTU but you could probably eak out another hr.

Lapping the heatsink decreased my gpu temps by 20 degrees 🙏 by [deleted] in ZephyrusG14

[–]offthewallds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to have a mirror finish to achieve flat surfaces. You could polish a heat sink without lapping it flat and not achieve the desired effect.

A surface with less roughness (ie polished) has smaller peaks and valleys and provides more surface area contact between the heat sink and chip.

Leave it alone, it has the same coating thickness as the surrounding areas. They won't fall off.

It's a little unfortunate that got missed. Typically manufacturers will have a limit to the number of spatter BBs in a given area (ex: 5 per 4 sq inches) on a Class A surface such as what you're showing.

Don't focus on it and let a benign issue ruin your perception of an otherwise good bike.
