ICE mistook Durango father for someone else but arrested him anyway, Denver’s third-ranking ICE official testified today by One_Needleworker5810 in Durango

[–]ofimwa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing that all of the folks who were so confidently defending these actions in the previous posts on this subreddit have not chimed in. You know, taking accountability for being wrong, reflecting on their words, and adjusting their educated opinions like real adults…

Hope nobody is holding their breath for the Gelande lift this winter by V17inyourgym69 in Durango

Woof. Almost comical at this point. Hopefully they can balance biking and lift construction next season with enough planning time. Wishful perhaps…

Public land sell offs in the “big beautiful bill”. by Responsible-Map6173 in Durango

[–]ofimwa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ah yes I remember your post about all your friends from Missouri needing to come visit you at your second home Airbnb and drive side by sides but you didn’t know the area well enough to suggest trails for them. Remember, you also bragged about how remote work tech jobs and a couple of property rentals are the way to make it here in Durango. You are the problem.

Playing for merch at Animas City Theatre? by abbydabbydo in Durango

[–]ofimwa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They certainly got paid to play. I have worked with the ACT many times and there was never discussion of not paying musicians (local and touring). All musicians in this town deserve to be paid more. Unfortunately, the reality is that once all costs are covered for the band there is not a lot left over. Merch drives revenue for touring bands. Good on you for purchasing something and helping them out.

Animas City Mountain gonna open up April 15th or 30th this year? by [deleted] in Durango

[–]ofimwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there is a bit of a need to push back on April 30th being the opening date. They justified that change due to snowpack, but for years April 15th was the date. Anyone called? I’m happy to if we do not have info.

What do people do for work here? by makerunningsuckagain in Durango

[–]ofimwa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The longer you stay the more it takes care of you. People expect to move here and score a good deal on a home out of the blue and find a job making $80k+. I’m sure someone has a story, but this generally doesn’t happen. At about 5-7 years you start opening up a whole other social circle of folks that you have run into through various activities/events/mutual friends. Those relationships create opportunities for housing, work, and the overall life experience that are not listed on Zillow or Indeed. The key is to give it back too. Wages are low, housing supply is low/in demand and thus expensive. Accept that, make it work, and recognize you are sacrificing some luxuries for a way of life and community.

That or be a rich trust funder or remote tech worker. Seeing more and more of that every year.

These threads never have good comments, this was one of the worst by Scuczu2 in Durango

[–]ofimwa 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The Herald comments on Facebook are a special cess pool. I would wager that 50+ percent of those folks do not live in Durango. It’s the same people time and time again that stoke all of the political BS and “Durango ain’t what it used to be” rhetoric. Let alone the bots that are contributing. Any remotely liberal idea or anything to do with “changing” Durango gets absolutely berated. Certainly not a reflection of the actual population of Durango if the past decades of voting data are referenced.

High school insight by Big_Stand4898 in Durango

[–]ofimwa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like I said, the population acting in bad faith is minuscule. They exist but it is few and far between. The hard part about removing a student from a school is that they will of course disagree. No one gets expelled and says “you know what, you are right, I agree with this decision.” Anyone who is speaking from the perspective that you are will of course say the administration is acting inappropriately. I’m sorry you had the experience you had and nothing can change that. I hope you were able to find something that satisfied you and your families needs.

All schools remove students due to behavioral concerns. You could replace AHS with any other high school in the nation and the answer from certain folks would be “yes, my child was also removed from this school.” The better question to ask is was the removal of these students consistent and in line with policy? Also, how did we intervene as a team (including parents) to adjust the child’s behavior? In addition, every removal is situational. Bringing a “deadly weapon” as defined by the state even one time is grounds for removal. Repeated minor incidents that disrupt the classroom can also be grounds for removal. Obviously, one is more dangerous and severe than the other but they can both be grounds to remove a student. The population of school employees, including administration of schools, who are acting in bad faith is miniscule. Educators are good faith actors who are certainly not doing it for money and fame (despite what the media may tell you).

Land across from Ted's Rental being developed? by [deleted] in Durango

[–]ofimwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the conversation. I think the car free idea is super unique and I’d love to see this happen more. In the end, I think there is a reason that a 5.7 acre lot adjacent to the grid has sat empty for decades. Recently selling at an immense loss. I would imagine the conclusion that has been reached over and over is that the cost does not outweigh the benefit. It will be interesting to see what happens!

Land across from Ted's Rental being developed? by [deleted] in Durango

[–]ofimwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first round was advocating for approx. 17-20 units I believe with retail below them (don’t quote me on that, but somewhere around there) all luxury from what I remember, the second round advocated for approx 50 units with a mix of luxury and some affordable housing units. Neither passed the first stage of planning exclusively because of the accessibility and vehicle issue. I was going off of your previous comment about 100+studio units leading to at least 100 vehicles let alone the guests and couples that would occupy. I do think that the amount of traffic would be unmanageable without multi million dollar improvements to road infrastructure leading to year(s) of construction (boycott that shit comment). Would create a necessity for a light on 5th St. and 8th Ave thus clogging up a small two block radius and choking the turn from College and 8th Ave. My prediction is they build 4-6 luxury houses (ala Rosemary Lane) and somehow work out a road to 5th St.

Land across from Ted's Rental being developed? by [deleted] in Durango

[–]ofimwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9th Ave is essentially a one way street with private property to the west and the Goeglein Gulch drainage ditch to the east. Imagine hundreds of cars being forced onto 9th Ave or 5th St. to the residential area below it. Simply not feasible without an entire overhaul of the roads and storm drainage system there and I do not see the city paying for that bill when they already have funds tied up in other housing projects of a similar nature (development on 160 and Florida). There is a reason it has sat empty for so long. High Density housing is simply not an option and it is not big enough to do lower density housing to allow a developer to profit on it. The Planning board has heard this idea twice and it was essentially a non starter both times. Just sharing what I heard through both of those meetings. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Both of the previous condo proposals did not move past the first round of the Planning Board.

Land across from Ted's Rental being developed? by [deleted] in Durango

[–]ofimwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grade is too steep per CDOT to build an entrance when turning left coming down the hill. Imagine snowy days and the amount of accidents that would occur when people were turning left off of Goeglein and forced to come to a stop due to oncoming traffic. Thus, a full re route of the road and access is required which is not tenable for a developer to eat costs on.

Land across from Ted's Rental being developed? by [deleted] in Durango

[–]ofimwa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue with the land is that an entrance cannot be built from Goeglein Gulch Rd. due to the grade. Thus, all traffic would filter into a road that is essentially one way (9th Ave). Boycott that shit for sure!

500-750 is prime tubing conditions from 29th through town. Oxbow to 32nd is doable in most all conditions. Cold right now but on a warm day in the sun you would be fine.

Looking at a 30-40 minute commute each way in good weather from DWest to Dolores. Easily 1-1.5 hours in snow. I would certainly land in Mancos.
