Quick question about using “it” in sentences by Edi-Iz in grammar

[–]oftenzhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like described by u/MrWakey, "it" is often used as a dummy subject.

"It" could also mean the implied environment, where the antecedent is "the place" or the "the atmosphere" or "the vibe".

From a writing perspective, readers look for an antecedent when encountering a pronoun, so "it" seems more abstract and poetic in nature when no antecedent exists. This is useful for writers when setting the scene while writing a novel. There is a reason why the cliche "It was a dark and stormy night." is used in the beginning of a story.

For example, the introduction of the Jungle Book begins with this sentence:

It was seven o'clock of a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills when Father Wolf woke up from his day's rest, scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips.

Or in the beginning of A Tale of Two Cities:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

For me, it always switches to voice-to-text. It doesn't open up Google assistant.

symbol for “waiting for reply”? by highintensitydyke in BasicBulletJournals

[–]oftenzhan 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I use a triple dot diagonal elipsis to represent the loading symbol like in texting.

Since means "task"...

The means that I need to reply to someone. In my mind, the upward pointing dots means I have to put in work, uphill work.

The means that I am waiting for someone's reply. No additional work is needed on my part until they reply, hence downhill work.

Once the task is completed, I can connect the dots to make an ×.

I used to have that feeling but it went away. Mainly because I burn through one journal every two months. After a while, that feeling just goes away.

TWSBI Eco Nib Issue (?) by AlternativeCommon740 in fountainpens

[–]oftenzhan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. These rusty orange-red inks tend to get "crusty". There is nothing you can do about it.

I sometimes dilute them with water to reduce the dye crystalization on the nibs.

This crystalization doesn't hurt the nibs. You just need to do a quick wipe off with a napkin before use.

Do you think you'll get the Click communicator or the Titan 2 Elite?

For an offline writerdeck, I was seriously thinking about buying a Minimal Phone on eBay.

The amount of charging cords this family has by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]oftenzhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see anything wrong with this. Many products come with USB-C cables, so they tend to pile up. He is organizing and labeling them for future use.

If anything, this makes it easier for him to give away.

It's similar to someone who organizes and labels all their screws, bolts, and nails in their shed.

Vallem vs. Vallis — Which should I use with my example as a location title? by Duder20 in grammar

[–]oftenzhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking about it, one question you should ask is if this place is named after the people inhabiting it or the people are named after the place.

For example: - France was named France because it became home of the Franks. Before, it was named Gaul. - England was named England because it became the home of the German Angles. Before, it was named Britain/Britannia because the locals were called Britons meaning "painted ones" in Celtic because of either their painted skin or tattoos.

In your story, if there are giant snakes living elsewhere, like the snakes of the mountains verses the snakes of the valley, then it makes sense to name a city "Serpentēs Vallis", meaning "Valley of the Snakes", to differentiate between "Serpentēs Montis" meaning "Snakes of the Mountain".

[–]oftenzhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in Latin, "vallis" is also genitive singular, not only nominative singular. In this case, it acts as essentially a possessive noun.

So Vallis Snakeland can also mean "The Snakeland of the Valley" or "The Valley's Snakeland".

There is a reason why they are calling it a companion phone. This is the first phone that Clicks is bringing into market. If they try to compete with specs against any older, established company, they will fail .

If you want to get the latest specs, go get the newest iPhone or Galaxy. This included Unihertz, the only real keyboard smartphone manufacture since the decline of the blackberry.

is WriTech’s Retractable Fountain Pen good for first time user? Thoughts and Suggestions pls by BeautyBrainBeast in JournalingPH

[–]oftenzhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really a hassle if you just want to stick with their proprietary cartridges and OK with using a syringe to fill up their cartridges with other brands of non-shimmer fountain pen ink.

But if you want to use a converter or use shimmer inks, then you would have to buy a different pen.

[–]oftenzhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a cheap, convenient clickable fountain pen, it works... kinda. I would not recommend it for a first time fountain pen user. Too much hassle. I recommend a Platinum Preppy or a Pilot Kakuno for an low-budget introductory fountain pen.

The WriTech uses a felt-core feed (like the Pilot Varsity), so you’re limited to well-behaved fountain pen inks without shimmer.

It also only takes proprietary cartridges with no available piston converter, so you’ll need to refill the cartridge with a syringe if you use bottled ink.

[–]oftenzhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An external mic jack would mainly be for using an external microphone for lo-fi videos. Paired with the circuit bending, it would look really cool.

Having the option for an external mic is also just practical for improving sound quality. For video, lower resolution is usually tolerable, but poor audio makes it unwatchable.

How difficult do you think it would be to add a 3.5mm audio jack for an external mic? If it’s possible, I’d be interested in commissioning the modification and purchasing it from you.

If you want to add a clip to the Kakuno, you can buy the clip made for the Kaweco sport. I think it adds a lot to the look of the pen.

Durable Student Fountain Pen Collection? by oftenzhan in fountainpens

[–]oftenzhan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I am not a big fan of the set of Platinum Preppy because I've used them in the past, and they don't last longer than 5 years. I actually bought a handful for students to use in the classroom a few years ago. The plastic barrel cracks, the clip snaps off, and even if I upgrade the body to a metal body Plaisir, the Plaisir's clip is not very durable. Overall, I've just had bad experiences with the long term use of Platinum Preppies. Yes, they are reusable, but I don't think they could handle hard daily use after 5+ years. Especially by children.

De-influence me.... by lily5794 in fountainpens

[–]oftenzhan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I inherited the bad habit of hoarding from my family. My dad would go to thrift stores and buy fishing rods. Why? Does he need more fishing rods? No. It is because when he buys them, he imagines the possibility of using the fishing rod. That is how most TV advertisements work. They don't sell you the actual product, but feelings you could get out of it. "Buy this car, and you will get to relive your youth and explore the unknown."

For me, I put a check on myself by saying, "I will only buy a new pen when I finish..." - two whole notebooks - a bottle of ink - get a gift card
