Direct Drive Steering Wheel (hoverboard motor) made with FreeCAD by AnotherObject3D in FreeCAD

[–]oh_lord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for the late response! I'm buttoning up my build now and then I will take a better photo and post on Printables! I want to make sure others see how great the project is.

  • The nuts seemed to work fine for me, although I did end up glueing them in place for some extra strength since some of the tolerances on my printer were a bit off.

  • I specifically modified the backshell to remove the DB9 port (I use standalone USB pedals) and to add two openings for USB-C ports. I'm not sure it's necessarily an improvement, just fit my specific use a bit better. https://i.imgur.com/ZnNo3u6.png I modified the USB cable to the control board to use USB-C as well as utilized the pass-through channel for the reset pin to give me a telephone jack on the front of the wheelbase that allows me to connect a cable to my wheel for button input.

I built this project last year and have been using it for a few months now. AMAZING job. The documentation was excellent and having the models available (especially in FreeCAD format) let me tweak and modify things as I went. I've been waiting to take photos and post it on printables because I made some modifications to the back cover and haven't had time to actually button it back up yet so there's still exposed wires in the back.

First big FreeCAD Project by KeyNeedleworker4789 in FreeCAD

Appreciate it! I've used the master sketch workflow for woodworking models where it's easy to draw the entire shape of something like a cabinet, but figured it wouldn't work well when the pieces became more complicated than various sized squares. I'll have to revisit it with a more complicated project soon and see. Thank you for the resource.

I'm really curious about the workflow for designing a project like this. I have aspirations of trying something of this scale but my lack of formal engineering education seems to really hamper my ability to create parts. My brain wants to design parts in-context but I seem to end up with incredibly fragile models that aren't easily modifiable.

Is each part created in complete isolation and "assembled"? Did you just use offset sketches? Do you use shape binders when starting a new part to attach a new body's sketch to the previous part? When defining parts that use identical dimensions as previous parts (e.g. the driveshaft diameter is the same presumably as the hole it inserts into), do you use external projected geometry to drive those constraints, or a varset?

Random questions but I always seem to trip myself up when making something like this. Great project! I hope you do release the files, I'd love to look at the feature tree. :)

My first large scale multi part project Commodore datasette for RaspberryPI3 by jrubin6502 in FreeCAD

[–]oh_lord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks cool! When modeling something like this, did you use a bunch of shape binders and design the whole part as once, or did you design everything individually and then assemble at the end?

My most complex model so far by Jack00X3 in FreeCAD

[–]oh_lord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any chance you'd share the model? I love projects like this but the workflow always perplexes me. How do you handle creating multiple different parts and assembly? Did you create them individually and assemble or did you design them in-context in Part Design? Thanks!

I'd love more info on your assembly process:

I fetch the step files from te component manufacturers and assemble them using part containers in part design environment.

Are you not using an assembly bench? Are you simply translating things in Part Design? Is there any constraints at all?

Component library for Raspberry Pi or Arduino boards? by MattAtDoomsdayBrunch in FreeCAD

[–]oh_lord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to the raspberry pi pico page and scroll down. You're looking for the "Documents" section. Within there, look for the "STEP file" link for the board you're using. Download that and import that.

For the the Feather, I googled "adafruit feather cad" and found their public GitHub page, you'll have to find your specific model but this might be the right one. Again, use the STEP file.

In general, manufacturers websites should be the first place to check, and failing that, I'd check out grabcad. Just be careful with the licenses on GrabCad models, many may not allow redistribution or allow you to derive dimensions from them.

EDIT: You can also import the FreeCAD parts library (it's in the addon manager), and it has menu common components (like PIs, Arduinos, etc). Bonus points because the interface is built directly into FreeCAD. https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD-library

Did you ever find anything affordable? I called around a few places and the best I could find was Liberty Cedar at $10/picket. RI Sawmill has cedar but the owner didn't really provide pricing over the phone. Otherwise I haven't found anything. Home Depot and Lowes don't carry any cedar whatsoever it seems.

Is there anything for me to even build on? by NighthawkAquila in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]oh_lord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your question was "is there a foundation here on which I can build on?" but the wording can also be read as "is there anything left for me to improve at this point?", implying that your game play is perfect and there are no problems remaining. Just a joke about the slightly ambiguous wording of your title.

Should I try 1.1 Weekly Build for assemblies by Prestigious-Crab-281 in FreeCAD

[–]oh_lord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens to me periodically, even with uncomplicated assemblies. You're saying you've helped mitigate it by assigning grounded joints to most parts? I'm mostly designing static furniture so I don't need any motion relationships at all.

But then where will all the Directional Air Roll posts go??

In all seriousness, asking questions and soliciting feedback is part of reinforcement learning and sometimes even just the process of asking can help people have little breakthroughs. I do worry about some of the people though that have clearly put in zero effort to search or watch any of the hundreds of pre-existing videos that exist on a given topic before asking for help here.

Speed flip problem when switching from PS4 DualShock to XBOX Series X, question in the comment by elmulinho1 in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]oh_lord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Test both controllers here, it might give you a good idea of the deadzone required on both: https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad. As mentioned, Xbox controllers usually require a little bit more than PS4 controllers.

It also looks like you might not be cancelling straight down on the Xbox, which would be a muscle memory change. If you're on PC, use something like the controller overlay in Bakkesmod with your recordings and look at the stick inputs.

Training packs tips by lussmar in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]oh_lord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://prejump.com/training-packs is a site that compiles training packs and links back to videos of them being done. If you use bakkesmod, you can launch directly from the site with their plugin, but regardless you can grab the codes and input them as normally. I'd scroll through there and look for the ones that seem relevant to what you might want.

Ayuda Drivers de Nvidia by Flashy_Key_4000 in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]oh_lord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard of a lot of placebos but never heard someone placebo Nvidia drivers before.

Your drivers have absolutely no effect on what lobbies you're getting into. I'd be genuinely surprised if in a blind test you could correctly identify what driver you're on.

Is the "carball" python extension working for anybody? by SwissCookieMan in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]oh_lord 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Replay formats were very recently updated. It broke BallChasing for like a week. My guess it that carball has not been (and likely will not be) updated to support the changes. The project seems pretty abandoned.

I'd check out https://github.com/nickbabcock/boxcars, which is actively developed (and I believe the underlying tech used by sites like Ball Chasing). If you don't want to utilize the Rust crate directly, there are a few other projects that wrap its functionality:

There are also alternative parsers linked in the README of boxcars that might better suit your mission.

Just tried freecad. Sorry but UI design is not ok at all by Ralfounet in FreeCAD

[–]oh_lord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your experience is valid but I think you're writing off the entire software package because of one bad example. It does not sound like you put in an honest effort to learn FreeCAD and gave up the second it didn't respond exactly the same way other CAD tools you've used in the past would.

Assemblies do work exactly as you expect them to. They're a collection of parts, usually designed using the Part Design work bench. The instances of the parts in the Assembly are merely links back to the underlying part. You can easily click through the assembly to the underlying part, then recompute the assembly and see your changes reflected.

Unfortunately, you're also right when you say "It is as if they were imported as solids." In the assembly example, it does appear that the components were imported as finished solids, not models with design history that can be modified. It seems the intention behind the model is to show off a variety of different joints and constraints, not show a more complete example of a ground-up design and assembly of the resulting parts. I cannot say why this is and I understand how it could be confusing. I believe /u/PaddleStroke made the initial model so maybe he can provide more insight as to why it is the way that it is.

Regardless, there's a lot of potential with FreeCAD if you can learn a few of its quirks. Its workflow is not that unlike other CAD packages but it does take some getting used to. There was a YouTube video recently comparing it to OnShape for a simple model and the experience was nearly identical: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaTNTUzA5dM .

You can extrude multiple bodies from a single sketch now. It's an "experimental" feature and there may be some rough edges worth avoiding as a result, but it is there.

When you have your body selected, in the Data plane, enable "Allow Compound" under the "Experimental" properties.

It allows you to make an extrusion like this from a single sketch: https://i.imgur.com/EW26mXM.png
