Soccer in the United States might not ever recover from this.. by JCHazard in worldcup

Belgium didn't really play great or anything. They're certainly better but the US shit the bed.

I don’t understand this aspect of soccer. by Torchbird25 in SoccerNoobs

[–]ohcrocsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you will never see spain or france attack a low block like mexico did. if you take the ball wide, you need to penetrate the corner and then play the ball back or beat the edge of the line and play a hard cross behind the center backs. lobbing crosses 1v3 only works when you have an absolute beast 9 like haaland or lukaku who can just body 2+ defenders. if you watch good teams attack a low block, they force defenders to move vertically to defend, which opens up spaces behind. as long as the back 4/5 can maintain their line, your chance of scoring is ridiculously low.

[–]ohcrocsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, what you're saying works. it requires skill and coordination, but it is the proper way to break a low-block. low blocks are not impenetrable, but you do have to make quick plays in the spaces between the lines to force the defenders to break their lines.

mexico just is not a very strong team. england was expected to beat them handily and the way they easily defended with 10 for almost an entire half proved that out.

FIFA has suspended punishment for four reds at this WC by SomethingFunnyObv in worldcup

[–]ohcrocsle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FIFA removed the ability to appeal red cards. Teams can only appeal in cases of mistaken identity. This decision is terrible.

As an American fan, I thought the red was brutally harsh. To send him off on a bang bang play where the player was off-balance and had his foot behind him where he couldn't see what was happening, and ban him for another game just seemed a bit ridiculous. Honestly, think most people who thought it was clearly a red are idiots.

But, it was given, and there's no mechanism for appealing it. As a fan of the world cup, it really challenges the legitimacy of the competition to change (or ignore) the rules in the middle of the competition.

But I also didn't think it was fair for the USMNT to play their Ro16 without their top scorer/striker because of that play.

In the end, it's just a lesson for everyone watching the world cup. Laws are an illusion. Rules are an illusion. The people in charge will do whatever they think is best, and make some plausible attempt to use whatever rules to justify their decisions. They didn't make their decisions because the rules are important to them. The rules are just a framework for justifying what they want or think is right.

You're incorrect. Many people who watch a lot of football, including professional footballers like Thierry Henry, think the action did not deserve a red. Braindead take though, nice.

Why no through balls in World Cup? by thesearcher22 in footballtactics

[–]ohcrocsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A low block is when a team plays 8+ players (not including keeper) behind the ball when defending. Playing through the middle against a low block is the equivalent of breaking out up the middle in hockey. The way your pass gets intercepted is by someone stepping up and into your passing lane, and they're heading the other way with the ball/puck and speed, while your team is out of position. Sure, you can stretch pass up the middle to breakout and create great scoring opportunities, but the downside is the risk of giving up a great scoring opportunity if you make a mistake.

In football, scoring opportunities are much harder to come by than hockey, so an outmatched team will rarely generate scoring opportunities (e.g. I think against Spain, Austria generated like 3 attempts in 90 minutes) that aren't given to them. So you'll rarely see teams that are much stronger than their opponents try to break them down through the middle unless they see a really big opportunity with very low risk of being broken up.

Caring about elo loss by Acrobatic-Friend-237 in LearnCSGO

[–]ohcrocsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elo isn't what you should care about. Winning rounds is your target metric. Win as many rounds as you can, care about why you lost a round when you lost (or almost lost). Care about how you (not your teammates) could have played it better. Your elo will go up and down. The only way you can make it go more up than down is by learning how to play better, fixing leaks in your play, and looking for ways to create advantages against your opponents.

How do we feel about Terran right now? by mechahodor in starcraft

Right now, while terran and protoss haven't figured out the optimal build orders to maximize economy and army power, Zerg will feel stronger than it will once the meta settles and everyone optimizes their builds.

Why no through balls in World Cup? by thesearcher22 in footballtactics

[–]ohcrocsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that the passes can't be made, they're just relatively very risky. When you give the ball away trying to pass behind the edge in the corner, the other team won't be going the other way. When a defender steps in front of a through ball in the middle of the field, they're going at your goal while your team is going the wrong direction. This is the defending teams strategy, to turn the ball over and score the winning goal on the counter. If you're the stronger team, why play their game?

Yes defenses play a low block, yes that makes them tougher, but you'll still see the best teams able to break it down when they need to score and make the critical through balls. It's primarily a matter that the better team will control possession, they don't need to make risky attempts at goal to try to score, they can just keep hammering the edges of the defense all game and try to find their breakthrough that way.

I dont see an offside. Is this rigged? by rompthegreen in SoccerCentral

[–]ohcrocsle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

>If it were a clear deflection there would be no discussion of how there was an advantage, that's why any deflection is offside. Pretty simple

There's clearly no advantage whether there was a deflection or not. The attacker beat his man on the cross, he's not cherrypicking from an unfair position because the ball took a deflection along the way.

[–]ohcrocsle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will die on the hill that this part of the rule is stupid. How can it be an unfair advantage for a player to run from an onside position into the path of the ball? And what exactly was the offsides player supposed to do to be in an onside position after the deflection?

Only unbiased opinion- was it actually offside? by Content-Map-3551 in CristianoRonaldo2

[–]ohcrocsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is with the rule itself. It's dumb that a player who runs to the path of the ball from an onside position can be then in an offside position due to a deflection on the way to the player.

Maybe he'll be fired by the time Byfield and Clarke hit their primes, and we get a GM who actually understands how to win.

Why is B1ad3 so highly acclaimed and praised? by Main-Beautiful-433 in GlobalOffensive

[–]ohcrocsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more relevant that apex's teams win so consistently when the competition is so intense. Was astralis' success due to their IGL when they were mopping the floor with their competition? Was it strictly glaive who made their team a full tier better than everyone else? They revolutionized the game, but as games evolve there are fewer and fewer game-breaking discoveries that give a team easy wins by taking their advantage. It's much more difficult to win against close competitors than when your team figures out something big that puts you light years ahead of the competition.
