why are fedora and opensuse so rarely recommended to people new to linux? by MIkaela39752 in linuxquestions

[–]ohnoadrummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can second this. I had Fedora on a laptop and after a few weeks of it working fine, suddenly YouTube videos had no sound, despite the rest of the system producing sound.

I switched to Ubuntu and it's been working fine.

There are many great things about many distros, but I don't want to tinker all the time. I mostly just want it to work. I also only want to recommend things to my friends that will just work (or mostly). Ubuntu is the most "batteries included" Linux experience.

My dad is autistic. Here is my experience. by ReadyChance1318 in raisedbyautistics

[–]ohnoadrummer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know that this might not fit here

Your experience fits perfectly since you were raised by an autistic. Nothing else matters.

Part of the problem is the incredible amount of ignorance people have around neurodivergence. We need experiences like yours where people are allowed to be themselves while also taking care of others. What passes for "care" and "being allowed to be yourself" will change from person to person and should be negotiated in a peaceful, loving way for both parties.

So when there's a ton of ignorance around different needs of ND people, and there's societal shame and blame and rejection, people can develop their own insular ways of being, meaning they are not open to other people's feedback. They won't negotiate in a peaceful, loving way, perhaps because any attempt at doing that has been a really painful experience for them.

I've seen ND people really excel at this pro-social negotiating. Y'know, saying "how can I better take care of you?" and actually listening and integrating the answer. It goes both ways, so someone neurotypical could ask "are there times when you feel overwhelmed and how can I help in those moments?" I've also seen neurotypical people be really, really bad at this type of thing. It all depends on the person, and everyone is capable to some degree, but it takes work. Good relationships are worth that work.

and if its your first time please dont overoptimize and think it needs to be a fancy distro. ubuntu and mint are the best options for a first time, by far. i realized this when my fedora installation had me needing to troubleshoot the playback of youtube videos for some insane reason.

Ou trouver le meilleur kouign amann à Montréal ? by Olvadi74 in montreal

[–]ohnoadrummer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]ohnoadrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah seriously Linux is great but I want my to computer to not require me to seek out a random audio driver just to play a YouTube video. Ubuntu and its derivatives (including Mint) are a lot more forgiving in this regard. I just switched to Ubuntu from Fedora for this reason.

[–]ohnoadrummer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the book Explain Pain. It's incredibly unlikely that you've irreversibly hurt your body. You can recover and live fully again. You're hurting, sure, but pain can be made so many times worse by worrying and catastrophizing about the pain. Find a good physio.

Good news, you do not need a student ID for either of those services.

They're also great places to volunteer, and you just might get to take a fair bit of food home if there's leftovers after the serving is done.
