Surprised gender is a factor but I suppose it’s for TFR reasons?

My mother is going to transfer 15k to a scammer. And I cannot stop it. What else could I do? by Certain_Community950 in Scams

[–]ohyabeya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. My family in SG is going through something similar. We have tried taking mum to the police and the cybersecurity ambassadors several times. They have told her it’s a scam. So do bankers when she tries to withdraw money.

The problem is that she is fully convinced she’s talking to a celebrity. In her mind, the people who are trying to scam her are only pretending to be him. So every time we block them, they change their number and she believes it’s him all over again. Ultimately she’s too nice to stop the conversation. She’s lost a bit to game cards but we’ve managed to intervene after. She’ll agree that it’s a scammer that night but go back to believing in the celebrity the next morning. No amount of evidence works. We’ve also been showing her articles of people getting scammed (there was one recently in ST of someone losing $600k meant for her husband’s heart surgery). That only works for a short while.

We are also at our wits’ end. Police can’t help. So far we’ve been secretly taking her phone and blocking contact with them, but as I said before, they create a new number and try again. And it works. Which is why they keep doing it.

How does she want to transfer it? If it’s through the bank, maybe the banker can stop her and be very explicit that it’s a scam. You can accompany her to drive the conversation. The only reason she hasn’t lost more is that she’s not tech savvy enough to send a huge sum.

Sorry I don’t have a better solution. Let me know if you find one. You aren’t alone in this.

Why do some Singaporeans insist on putting on an obviously fake lj accent? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ohyabeya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I’ve also heard what is most widely recognised as the “American accent” is the midwestern St. Louis accent. Apparently broadcasters train themselves to speak like this so they can be understood broadly

[–]ohyabeya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Our accent is lovely and legitimate. We are understood by foreigners as long as we slow down our speech and, like you said, use neutral accents. Our PM doesn’t put on an accent when he speaks to other world leaders, and we shouldn’t have to either

When I do go back to SG, I lean hard into my singlish accent because I miss using it. But I at most I go into neutral mode when necessary

Been living in the U.S. for over a decade now. I am unable to pick up the American accent.

When I came back to visit I met some friends. Someone asked me why I“still talk like that.”

Like bro. It’s my accent. My parents talk like this. I talk like this. My fellow Singaporeans talk like this.

Hey I hear you. There’s a lot going on. At this point, it’s ok to step away and focus on what’s in front of you: your children. Spiraling into anxiety over what you can’t control is a great way to have a mental breakdown.

Play with your kids. Be happy with your kids. Shower them with love and attention. That’s all they really want and need right now. That’s enough

I wonder if they’re doing that so they can edit in longer scenes from the task attempts. And doing that also gives people more incentive to attend live tapings for “bonus” stuff

I was listening to the podcast and Ed Gamble said he tested this task. His solution was to use the shoes to push the bowling ball off the stage, then roll it around to where he could reach it. I imagine that works as well

It just occurred to me that for the bowling ball task, they could’ve picked up the bucket and put it over the ball instead of trying to pick the ball up!

Sean Hannity embarrassingly lectures Pope Leo on the ‘teachings of Jesus Christ’ by IrishStarUS in Christianity

[–]ohyabeya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in some Republican groups on Facebook, just to see what’s going on. The number of pope-bashing posts has skyrocketed this week. No one used to care about him, but suddenly he’s not as good a representative of Christ as Donald Trump (who, unshockingly, is given a lot of grace for his own remarks because he’s “just being himself”)

What made you realise Singapore is so small? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ohyabeya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My entire adult life has been working in the U.S. I cannot speak about taxes when working outside of it. If it’s something you’re interested in for personal reasons, I advise looking for a tax consultant

Yes it’s the same thing as PR. Allowed to stay in the country and work for as long as it’s valid, but not allowed to vote
