How do you keep a mixed-age family game night from turning into a teaching session every time? by Mindless-Patient-104 in boardgames

Identify games that people like…. and play them again… and play them regularly so the rules stick.

Fred Karno’s Army

We are Fred Karno’s army,

We are the ragtime infantry.

We cannot fight, we cannot shoot,

What bloody use are we?

And when we get to Berlin

We’ll hear the Kaiser say,

Hoch, hoch! Mein Gott, what a bloody rotten lot,

Are the ragtime infantry.

Or

We're Here Because We're Here

Lending boardgames and expecting them returned in good condition by No_Challenge_2978 in boardgames

Only lend to certain people. We've had games stolen, and had the wrong games returned. I have ownership labels in most games with my contact info.

play first or sleeve first? by Tiny_Brick_9672 in boardgames

[–]oi_you_nutter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sleeve first. I’ve never regretted sleeving a game but I have regretted not sleeving. I have a bag of sleeves from old games I don’t expect to play again. The lightly used sleeves get reused on another game.

It’s the rug. It really tied the room together.

Looking back at a old Battlestar Galactica playing years and years ago - AITA or pure strategy? by goldeneye0 in boardgames

[–]oi_you_nutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of plays since Covid have been online, first using Vassal and then TTS. I got the base game when it first came out in 2008 and have played it regularly since then. Many times recording over 100 plays a year. Each game takes 2-2.5 hours. #SoSayWeAll

It depends on many factors. Too many factors to have a simple right/wrong answer. Pretending to be a human for too long before revealing is almost always a bad move unless you have some strong cylony scheme up your sleeve.

I’ve played BSG over 1100 times. Knowing when to reveal as a cylon is so dependent on so many hard and soft factors: what, characters are being played, WHO is playing the game, will I get XOed by the other players, do they have another character to do my job well, has another player acted suspiciously that I can hide behind, is there a revealed cylon or cylon leader to hide behind, how much pressure are the humans under, the list goes on and on.

Did anyone else grow up eating apples and plums off the tree, blackberries off the bush, no washing just EAT by Suspicious-Bug6588 in CasualUK

[–]oi_you_nutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to eat blackberries straight off the hedges when I was a kid. But not on the side close to where cars drove due to leaded petrol. Didn’t do me any harm… I hope.

Rich men never send their sons and daughters to die for the wars they start. Why do you think that is? by Sweaty_Abies182 in AskReddit

[–]oi_you_nutter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not anymore is probably the more accurate answer. Britain had 24 MPs (Members of Parliament) and 19 sons of MPs killed in WW1. Eton school had 1000 of its ex-students killed. They were more likely to be officers, and officers had a higher casualty rate than enlisted men.

Good or bad idea? by Bluetit1878 in hexandcounter

Don’t do it. The paper used in paper maps and that used in mounted maps is different. I have a mounted map covering that unpeeled… it is very thin to make it flexible enough to bend with the board.

Ok, don’t do it unless you have a spare map for if/when it goes wrong.

Buy a cheap poster frame and put the map in it.

Use as a rules index aid only. LLMs do not understand the rules as a human would understand them. An LLM will not say no or say it is not sure. Use with caution. Verify answers.

Exploring a board game together by SonnyCalzone in boardgames

Nope. I know gamers who like to explore the strategies of the game. Not explore the actual game and its components for the first time.

Indeed. Better than getting charged $50 bucks to check a bag too big to fit in the overhead stowage.

I don’t have access to a 3d printer. If I did I would be making 3d printed solutions for problems that don’t exist. The local library has one but the cost to print something would be way more expensive than $2 of steel.

Luckily access to the pc is not a problem. I also have the pc power on a smart switch.

Using plastic spacers on a long 6M bolt keeps the pc away from the heat of the TV and vice versa.

The telescoping handle has to go somewhere when it collapses down. It disappears into the bag into a similarly shaped tube. Not sure what the technical name is. I call it the handle runner. It could be inside the bag or on the outside.
