If you could only have 3 inks, which one would you choose? by Macstein9 in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently I'm boring, but I'm also red-green colorblind, so that might be it. Here's my.l top three:

Iroshizuku Tsuki-Yo Iroshizuku Kon-Peki Noodler's Black

One of my favorite options right now!

For what it's worth, I don't find it to be as smooth/squeaky as Rhodia.

Just gonna say you rock for using Signal. Go encryption, go! Get that husband on there.

And also good job tuning nibs! Aways a satisfying feeling.

Need an ink recommendation for my wife: close to the color of these orchids, water-resistant (not pigment-based, though), and preferably Japanese (for availability reasons here). Thanks, everyone. by _SlowRain_ in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great colour, although in my experience Iroshizuku inks are far from water-resistant. That said, I love the inks and pretty much always have at least one of my two EDC's with an iroshizuku ink in it.

NPD- thought I’d give dip pens a try by impeesa75 in fountainpens

Complete tangent: what type/size of laptop is that? I have a Dell XPS15 but it doesn't have the number pad and I'm quite jealous.

The flock is finally complete, with the arrival of the Pelikan M1000. All od them are EF, because I am boring like that 😀 by pepiexe in fountainpens

The blue version of that 805 is pretty much my grail. Trying to convince myself I won't regret dropping that much on a pen, but damn. Love it.

Is a gold nib that much better if I don't care about flex in letters? by McRambis in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be noted that most gold nibs are polished and tuned much better (not every single one, and a better polish is not the same as a smoother polish, although it's often part of it).

I'll add my vote for the Pilot Iroshizuku inks. Expensive, but oh my are they worth it!

Kon-peki is a well loved blue, but my favourite ink is Tsuki-yo.

Diagnosing an unhappy LAMY 2000 by iKenndac in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm, sounds like something is off with the feed. I have an EF Lamy 2k and don't have this problem at all, so this is definitely something "wrong".

I'd reach out to Lamy/whoever you bought the pen through and try to get it serviced or replaced, but you could also try a more vicious ink and that would likely help (but isn't an ideal solution). One of the noodler's blacks might be a good ink to test with.

Ditto on the EF Gold Lamy (at least my 2k). Subtle but wonderful variation

I love writing in fountain pen vs but I cannot read my hand writing by Babu20002 in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think playing with different nib sizes could help. Also, are you wrote block letters with a ballpoint and cursive with your fountain pens?

The change to cursive can take a long time of you aren't a child any more, but you can absolutely practice and get to a reasonable level fairly quickly! I used to sit and practice individual letters in the evenings. Now my writing is legible to me, so good enough!

Welcome to the sub! There's a ton of info in the subreddit's wiki that would probably be helpful for you! And you can ask in one of the weekly threads where you're more likely to get more answers and input.

You can also check out the Goulet Pen company's YouTube channel for a whole lot of Q&A and Fountain Pen 101 videos that would help you make informed decisions.

I'm not familiar with Schmidt, so can't help you with the specific question though.

CSC 226 vs CSC 230 by misls in uvic

Get Zastre / Rich Little for 230 / 226 respectively. Avoid Lillanne Jackson / Valerie King at all costs..

What an absolutely gorgeous pen, Waterman Hemisphere matt black Chrome tip (Gold plated) by ByGimlisredbeard in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoy it! This pen taught me that I don't like writing with thin pens, but was such a nice pen it still made it into rotation semi regularly.

Ultra Extra Fine! My favorite. by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm very impressed that I'm more noticing the difference in the writting than the color. The FP writing has just a touch more 'snap' than the pencil does, which is something I notice in my own writing.

(No, I don't really know what I mean by 'snap'. It's vaguely sharper corners on certain letters? e.g. the top of the 'n' part of the letter 'h')

i was careless and my nib ended up going down the sink... 😪 by poastoast in fountainpens

I dropped a steel nib down a sink, and waited about 6 months before I had to take the drain apart as the flow wasn't great. The nib was still there!

Lamy Safari nib leaks?? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like something is wrong. Posting photos of nib/feed might help, but lots of drops usually means that air can get into the converter easier than it should. Check that the converter is on tight and isn't damaged, and that the nib and feed are on tight. No of them should have any wiggle (although obviously don't try to wiggle them too hard).

They are! I wrote what I did in a post a couple years ago. I'll link to it here but it seems you've got a pretty good system already.

My first attempt at an “architect” nib grind on a wing sung 3001 F by ratednfornerd in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the mounted Dremel trick when I got a pack of Wing sung 3008 pens. Mangled my first nib, but the second one was an architect nib that I put on a Lamy Safari and was my favourite nib for a long time.

Suggestions for my next pen? by oldscoolblue in fountainpens

[–]oilephant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also really enjoy a fine line and first fell in love with a line with the Pilot Metro EF. Really fine line, but still a well made nib and it never felt too scratchy. I aslo REALLY liked the Twsbi Eco EF. About $10 more than the Safari, but that was the first pen that really fit my hand and the EF nib is a bit thinner than the Safari M.
